The Brother MFC-L2750DW is a monochrome laser printer that delivers pretty much everything you want in an all-in-one printer. Made for small office use, this unit has a monthly duty cycle of 15,000 pages that handles pages quickly and affordably, with some of the best print speeds we’ve seen and printing costs as low as 2.7 cents per page.

The printer is also loaded with handy features like scanning and copying, fax capability, and a second paper tray. Two-sided copies are extra quick, thanks to two-sided scanning that captures the front and back of a page simultaneously and an automatic duplexer for two-sided printing. The printer even produced two-sided documents faster than some competitors printed one-sided pages. The MFC-L2750DW is especially convenient for an office printer, with easy connectivity that includes mobile printing.

This printer may cost a bit more up front, but the Brother MFC-L2750DW is the best combination of print quality, speed and value we’ve seen in a laser printer, which is why it’s our Editors’ Choice.

How To Choose A Laser Printer

When it comes to picking any type of printer the basics are the same. You are probably already aware that laser printing produces professional looking text documents at a lower cost per page than similar inkjet models. But there are other features to consider.

All in one functions like scanning and copying are included in all of the models on the above list, but one less common function is fax capability. If you work with medical or legal documents, faxing is indispensable, and you’ll need a printer that includes it.

Print speed refers to how quickly a printer will complete a page in a document. In our reviews we test this capability, measured in pages per minute. If you need to print frequently, or in high volumes, faster print speeds are worth paying for.

Print quality is another concern, though the majority of laser printers offer some of the best print quality you can get, with sharp and detailed letter forms that leave documents looking professional.

What you won’t get on most laser printers is color and photo printing capability. While there are color laser printers on the market, they do cost more. And among those, not every color printer is well-suited to printing photos, and those that do require special photo paper specifically for laser printers.

Does Printer Ink Expire

Ink cartridges made by printer manufacturers all have expiration dates. It works like any other expiration date, and if you choose to use expired ink, you run the risk of damaging your printer. Ink thats too dry can clog the printers parts and cause flow problems, resulting in inferior print quality.

A good way to avoid this problem is to not buy more ink than you generally use. You may want to stock up to save time, but if you dont use your printer very much, you could end up with nothing but expired cartridges when the machine runs out of ink. However, most printer ink cartridges expire about two years after theyre manufactured. So, it should be easy to figure out how often you should order more.

Printing Costs: Instant Ink To The Rescue

Best Buy: Brother All

Until recently, a downside to entry-level inkjet AIOs is that they cost a fortune to use on a per-page basis. If you choose the conventional method of purchasing ink cartridges as needed when they empty , printing monochrome pages on the Envy 6452 will cost you a whopping 10.3 cents each and color pages an even steeper 22.3 cents.

That’s painfully high, even if it matches the 6455 model. The Brother MFC-J491DW’s cost per page is 6.8 cents for monochrome and 16.8 cents for color. Brother also offers the MFC-J995DW INKvestment Tank All-in-One, which delivers black pages for just under a penny apiece and color pages for about 4.5 cents.

This brings us to HP’s Instant Ink subscription program, where the Envy Pro 6452 itself keeps track of how many pages you print and orders cartridges from HP when it’s time to buy new ones. Designed for low-volume users who print around 50 to 300 pages monthly, the program offers three service levels, with the 300-page plan working out to a cost of 3.5 cents per page. The huge advantage here, though, is that that 3.5-cent cost applies to any page you print, be it a monochrome text page with very little ink coverage, or an 8.5-by-11-inch photo with 100 percent ink coverage.

And, to make Instant Ink even more attractive, HP at this writing was giving you the first two months of your subscription, or 600 pages, for free. Hence, if for the first year you max out your 300-page plan each month, your running costs will reduce to 2.8 cents per page.

Should You Buy Cheap Paper What About Recycled Paper

For everyday printing, store-brand 20-pound weight paper will usually server nicely. However, you’ll get better results if you step up to a higher-quality paper. For lasers, as well as for inkjet text and graphic printing, that means a heavier weight, and possibly a brighter white level. For photos on inkjets, it means getting photo paper. Getting the brand of photo paper that matches your printer’s brand will usually be the best choice; printer manufacturers design ink and paper to work together and often offer a variety of photo papers.

Recycled paper has likewise improved in quality, and you can find 100% post-consumer-content recycled paper for many uses, including cover stock and bright white paper suitable for business use. There are other kinds of eco-friendly paper on the market as well, such as all-purpose paper made from sugar cane and photo paper made from cotton. Do your small part to save a tree and research eco-friendly media options. Any modern printer will handle them well.

Canon Pixma G6020 Megatank Review: Print Quality

The G6020 prints attractive text documents. In our tests, letterforms were dark, with sharp edges. There was only a little bit of errant spray and some slightly lumpy edges. In duplex prints, text looked just as dark and sharp as in one-sided prints. By comparison the letterforms printed by the HP Smart Tank 651 were a little sleeker, with slightly sharper edges.

The G6020 printed color graphics with lots of fine details, attractive textures overall and natural-looking, well-saturated colors. Some mild banding was visible, however, and upon close examination there was slight pixelation in otherwise smooth-looking textures. Two-sided prints of color graphics were equally impressive something that the Epson ET-4760 did not do, producing two-sided prints that looked lighter and less sharp than single-sided prints. The HP Smart Tank printed color graphics of comparable quality to the G6020, but without the banding that was distracting in the Canons prints.

The Canon G6020 reproduced text accurately in its copies, and graphics retained their details and color accuracy. There was, however, some very mild banding in copies of both color and grayscale graphics, though this was not pronounced. By comparison, the HP SmartTanks color copies looked a little muddy, lacking the brightness and mid-tone details of the G6020s brighter color copies.

Move It Closer To Your Router

Brother DCP

I can’t tell you why, but I’ve seen many Wi-Fi printers that just seem to have weak signals, even if all my other devices work fine in the same location. My printer is much more reliable if the router is in the same room, and my father-in-law’s printer only works if he opens all the doors upstairs before trying to print.

Even if the Wi-Fi signal in that room seems fine, try moving your printer closer to the router if youre having connection issues. If your printer has a sub-par Wi-Fi chip, it may need a super strong signal to stay connected.

How Much Do You Plan To Print

If you print only a few pages a day, you don’t have to worry about how much a printer is designed to print, as defined by its recommended monthly duty cycle. If you print enough for the duty cycle to matter, however, don’t buy a printer that doesn’t include that information in its specifications. Figure out how much you print by how often you buy paper and in what amounts. Then pick a printer designed to print at least that much.

Also consider minimum and maximum paper size and whether you need a duplexer to print on both sides of the page. For input capacity, a useful rule of thumb is to get enough capacity so you should need to add paper no more than once a week. If you often print on envelopes, checks, or letterhead, look for a printer with multiple drawers so your printing isn’t slowed down by needing to unload regular paper and load your specialty media.

Is Your Aio For A Home Or An Office

The single most useful way to categorize MFPs is by intended use: home, office, or both. If you’re looking for a home MFP, you probably care about photo quality, which means you want an inkjet. Beyond that, if photos are your primary interest, and you’re looking for a way to print them from virtually any sourcememory cards, USB memory keys, cameras, slides, strips of film, and original photographic printsyou need a photo-lab MFP. There are only a few choices in this subcategory: You can spot them by their ability to scan slides and strips of film, a feature most MFPs leave out.

When looking for an MFP strictly for an office, you probably care more about text than photos, which means you’ll want a laser or laser-class printer. You probably also want it to support faxing, though there is much to be said for using an online fax service instead, and to include an automatic document feeder to scan, copy, fax, and email multipage documents.

How Do You Gauge Size And Weight

To a large extent, a printer’s size and weight are dependent on its intended use, but even so, there are considerable variations. Make sure the printer will fit in its allotted space , and isn’t too heavy to move around if you decide to renovate. Very compact printers are available for people who live and work in dorm rooms or other tight spaces.;

As a general rule, printers get bigger the more features you add on: additional paper trays, automatic document feeders, high-capacity ink tanks, and so on. If space is a concern, choose wisely when it comes to these add-ons.

How To Find The Best Photo Printer For You

Best HP All-in-One Printer Review – WIFI PRINTING!

Choosing the right photo printer is largely a question of desired picture size and whether or not you want portability. Photo printing covers several subcategories of printer, ranging from portable photo printers for smartphones to multifunction all-in-one printers. Those offer photo printing alongside document printing, scanning and copying.;

Inkjet printers that offer photo printing will usually do so at sizes up to a full page, while dedicated photo printers may be limited to 4 x 6 prints or smaller. If larger prints are what you want, then no pocket printer will do you need a desktop inkjet printer.

Portability is the other big concern. Many people find that the best time to print off those vacation photos is during the vacation, getting hardcopies of that day at the beach or that memorable museum tour printed right in your hotel room, instead of letting all of your photos accumulate until you have several hundred to sift through after your return home. Additionally, many people value the spontaneity afforded by portable photo printers, and many of the best photo printers market themselves as modern equivalents to the instant cameras of decades past.
