Reasons to avoid

Typical of Canon 5-ink printers over the years, this one runs on a pigment-based black cartridge for rich, solid text in document printing, along with dye-based cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks for photo output. Better still, you can keep plain paper for document printing in the internal cassette, and load sheets of variously sized photo paper into the upright rear feeder, as and when you want to create photo prints. The four dye-based inks for photo printing naturally have a smaller gamut than in Epsons competing photo printers that use six dye-based inks but, even so, the Canons colour rendition looks very lifelike and natural for everything from portrait skin tones to vibrant landscapes. The motorized output tray adds a touch of automation and the on-board controls are simple and intuitive, based around an OLED screen. As usual with document/photo printers, theres a built-in scanner, ideal for creating photocopies, but this model lacks a memory card slot for direct photo printing, although it does have built-in Bluetooth. This printer is also available in white as the Canon Pixma TS6351.

Near-dedicated photo printers: Aimed toward amateur photographers, these photo printers offer more professional quality and can usually print up to 13 by 19 inches, also known as A3+ or 13-inch printers.

All-in-one printers: These inkjet printers can do more than photos, including regular text documents as well as scanning, copying, and faxing. Some inkjets come with more than just cyan, magenta, and yellows inks, though, which make them better for photo printing.

The Canon Pixma TR8620 offers plenty of office features, from scanning and faxing to a 20-page automatic document feeder , a duplexer for two-sided printing, and two paper trays for keeping two types of paper at the ready. But this multifunction printer doesn’t just offer document printing for homes and small offices; it also delivers great photo printing. A big 4.3-inch color touchscreen makes it easy to control, and the printer supports smart home integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

It’s also a great printer, with faster-than-average print speeds and high print quality overall. Text and color graphics all look great, but we noted that glossy photos printed impressively fast, and the use of a 5-ink cartridge system with two types of black ink resulted in photos with high-quality accuracy: Natural-looking colors, sharp details and smooth transitions. Really, our only big complaint with the Pixma TR8620 is the above average cost of ink, due partially to the expense of the extra ink cartridge.

Do You Need Ink For A Laser Printer

Best Printer for Fine Art Prints- Epson SureColor, Canon Pixma, Print on Demand – Review for Artists

No, laserjets do not use inks that are expensive, but use toners that are micro polymer powders as the colour medium. Here is a quick explanation of the laser printing process without getting too much into the technical details.

During the print process a laser beam scans the data back and forth and draws this image on a drum. This drum is then coated with toner by the roller, depending on the data read and when the paper is fed, it moves along the drum where the toner particles are transferred from the drum to the surface of the paper. This paper coated with toner , is passed through two hot rollers called the fuser unit and the heat and pressure from this unit fuses the toner particles into the fibers of the paper.

The Cost Of Fine Printing

Determining the running costs for a printer with six inks and oversize pages is difficult, since I can’t tell when the additional inks deploy and how much ink is discharged when they do. Any cost per page estimate that includes more than the original cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks is nothing more than a well-educated guess.

That said, using our standard cost-per-page calculation method, and assuming that the additional gray and red inks deploy only as needed when printing grayscale photos and graphics or color photos in general, I calculated that the XP-15000’s running costs are about 4.6 cents per black page and 13.9 cents per color page. Given a cent or two one way or another, these numbers are in line with the competition, but can add up over time, especially for non-professional photographers on a budget. Calculating running costs for the six-ink Canon Pixma TS9120 presents the same limitations, but my rough estimates for it are very close to those of the XP-15000.

Can You Use Glossy Photo Paper In A Laser Printer

If the glossy paper is manufactured specifically for laserjets, then it can be used in a laserjet, but do not use a paper manufactured for use on an inkjet, on a laserjet because they cannot withstand the heat produced by the rollers during the print process. Most inkjet papers have a special coating to receive spray on ink, some of which may have polyester properties and hence, using inkjet photo paper on a laser printer can melt that coating and cause damage to the fuser, drums and other parts of the device.

Moreover, photo papers designed for inkjets are thicker than ones that laser printers can take in and the coating on top of the paper for inkjets will not let the toner fuse or adhere to the paper. Papers designed for laserjets are coated to attract dry toner powder and any glossy paper manufactured for use on a laserjet can be used on a laser printer bear in mind, the final look of the image depends on the toner and not the paper as toner is not absorbed into the paper.
