How To Recycle Printer Cartridges
Now, after we know how critical is printer cartridge recycling and how cartridge components can be harmful to the environment, new questions unfold:
What do you do with your old printer cartridges? How do you properly recycle them?
Surprisingly, recycling printer cartridges is not difficult.
You can easily recycle your printer cartridges for money, charity, or just for the well being of the planet and its future generations by taking a few simple steps.
There are different ways to recycle your used ink and toner cartridges:
- Manufacturer Lead Recycle Programs
- Office Supply Store Recycle Programs
Lets see how these different recycling programs work.
Which Option Is The Best
While each option has its advantages, returning cartridges to an office supply store is least desirable to me, since it involves both a special trip and store credit.
Selling through a buy-back site is slightly better because it avoids those things, but the wait for the check makes this option less appealing.
For me, the best place to sell empty ink cartridges is eBay. I already know the site well, and once the transaction is complete, I can quickly access the money in my PayPal account.
Do Hp Cartridges Qualify For California’s State Agency Buy Recycled Campaign
Yes, all Original HP LaserJet cartridges and most original HP ink cartridges are now classified as recycled products for the California State Agency Buy Recycled Campaign reporting.;See list of SABRC qualified product numbers ;and;SABRC product certification letter .
This is in accordance with the state statute, SB 1106, that went into effect on January 1, 2006. Since HP offers a free and convenient end-of-life return and recycling program to customers, these products now qualify as recycled products and can be included in state agencies’ monthly totals of SABRC recycled product purchases. California state entities can take advantage of competitive pricing on a broad range of products, including all HP printer supplies, through the California Strategic Sourcing Initiative office supplies contract provided by the Department of General Services. HP printer supplies are also available from other office and computer products dealers across the state.

Ink & Toner Recycling Staples
Staples runs a robust Ink and toner cartridge recycling program that encourages repeat customers.
Customers who spend at least $30 on ink and toner at Staples can recycle their empty cartridges at any Staples store, or request a free shipping label.
Customers earn $2 back in Staples Rewards for each empty ink and toner cartridge they return. This is good for up to 10 cartridges per month.
What Do I Need To Know
Not all the recycling options above will accept every cartridge. If using one of the charity or cash options, you will need to find out which cartridges they are interested in. This should be stated on their website. You will then need to see which cartridges you have.
First of all, you will need to know the manufacturer and whether it is black or a colour;cartridge. It will usually state on the cartridge itself. If you cant tell, then take a look at your printer manual or online.
Next, you will need to know if it is virgin or non-virgin. Virgin means that it is an original cartridge bought straight from the main supplier. A non-virgin cartridge is one that has previously been refilled or it will have a label from another company such as Tesco or Asda.
The cartridges above are all virgin as they were bought straight from HP and have their logo.
Why Recycling Is Important
Fundraise and help your school, church or nonprofit with a FREE recycling program. Recycling empty printer cartridges is a great way to put some cash back into your group or organization
Refill the original brand cartridges to save time and avoid a trip to the store. Be advised, this will get messy and there is no guarantee once you decide to tamper with an original HP cartridge

Is It Ok To Throw Away Ink Cartridges
No. Im sure that over the last couple of years weve all become far more aware of the problems that plastic pollution is causing the planet. If you throw away an ink cartridge, it will probably end up in 1 of 2 places:
- landfill, where it will take over 1,000 years to decay. And if there is still ink left in the cartridge, this could spill and destroy the surrounding environment.
- incinerator, where the plastic is burned, releasing toxic gas into the air.
Sadly, 75% 85% of ink cartridges are still thrown away, rather than recycled in the UK.

Not Found A Good Solution
If your items are from business use, or you have quite a few of the larger toner cartridges, the services above are unlikely to be able to help you.
Try the other options in our main empty cartridge recycling guide instead you may be able to donate them for charity, send back to your manufacturer, or make use of a paid-for recycling service.
Please do not bin your cartridges in any circumstances they will take thousands of years to decompose in landfill, and if you are a business you have a legal obligation to have your waste treated and disposed of appropriately.
What To Do With Unused Printer Ink Cartridges
As already mentioned above, you can simply sell them.
Unused print cartridges that are in the original packaging and within the expiration date listed on the packaging can be easily sold online.
If your unused printer ink cartridges are out of the original packaging or out of date, they should be recycled using either a manufacturer lead recycling program, a non-manufacturer mail-back program, or dropped off at an office supply store.

Any Downsides To Ink Cartridge Recycling
Not really. If youre donating to charity, then not only are you helping the environment, youre also donating to a good cause.
If youre hoping for cash, then you are relying on these companies to be honest. Once youve sent your cartridges, thats it, theyre gone. If the company contacts you to say that the old ink cartridges werent any good and they wont be sending you any cash, then you have to accept that.
However, if you never received money from them before, its not like youre missing out anyway.
Turn Empty Cartridges In At An Office Supply Store
Big-box office-supply stores like OfficeDepot and Staples will recycle ink cartridges and even have ink cartridge recycling reward programs. These stores will give you $2 in store credit for each qualifying cartridge that you turn in, up to a maximum of 10 empty cartridges per month. That $20 a month could go a long way toward paying for school supplies each September!
To participate, you must be a member of their customer reward programs and make qualifying purchases. But if you regularly shop at either store, this could be a good solution for you. Its also worth checking out your local mom-and-pop office-supply store to see if it has a similar program.
