Other Ways To Save Money On Printer Ink
Finding the best deals on discount ink cartridges isnt the only way that you can save money when it comes to your printers running costs. Weve got a handy guide on how to save printer ink and print more efficiently, which will help you make the most out of your printer so you dont need to refill it as often.
You can also look at buying a more ink-efficient printer. Cheap printers seem like a great deal at first glance, but they often have much higher running costs than some of the more premium models, which can be a false economy if youre going to be using your printer regularly.
Can You Use Remanufactured Ink Cartridges In Hp Printers
Remember that printer manufacturers like HP are prohibited by law to prevent you from using compatible or remanufactured cartridges in your printer. Nevertheless, they have successfully got around the rules by devising clever systems like the cartridge protection setting, which renders generic ink cartridges useless.
But you may prefer using generic HP ink cartridges over original HP ink cartridges as they are cheaper while generally offering comparable print results. If such is the case, disable the HP cartridge protection or trick HP ink cartridges using the steps above.
It will depend on what type of other ink cartridge you intend to use on your HP printer. If its a third-party or generic compatible/remanufactured ink cartridge of the same model number, then yes, it will work. Sometimes, you will encounter some error message warning indicating your use of a none-OEM ink cartridge. If this happens, just hit OK to bypass the message and continue printing using your generic ink.
If youre using a different brand, then it wont work. You cant use Canon ink cartridges to replace HP ink cartridges and vice versa. You also cant interchange different ink cartridge models, even if they are from the same brand. Thus, you cant use HP 301 inks in an HP 304 printer even if theyll fit. The printer will display an inks not recognized message and the like, and there/s no way for you to bypass it.
Why You Want To Disable Hp Cartridge Protection
It makes no sense to have such a restrictive cartridge system. Some of the reasons why you may want to disable the HP cartridge protection include:
- Youll be prohibited to use refilled or remanufactured HP ink cartridges
- You wont be able to use the ink cartridges on a new printer if they have already been loaded to your old one.
- You cant recycle your ink cartridges which means they will end up as trash once they are empty
- HPs cartridge protection setting can sometimes work against brand new genuine or started cartridges as reported by some users.
Fortunately, theres a way to disable HP cartridge protection and make generic ink cartridges work on your printer. And the good news is its relatively easy to do on your own even without any technical know-how.

Understand Cartridge Page Yield
Whats page yield? Page yield is the approximate number of printed pages you get from a particular printer cartridge.
All printer manufacturers base their quoted page yield on the same ISO/IEC 24711 standards so consumers can easily compare cartridge efficiency across printer brands. Cartridge cost and page yield can vary from printer to printer, making it very important to keep in mind when shopping for a new machine.
Buying a printer that uses cartridges with an inefficient page yield means more frequent cartridge replacements and higher operating costs.
In your hunt for an affordable machine, you will want to look for a printer that offers a decent page yield and low cartridge costs. Unfortunately, this isnt always straightforward. In fact, two printer cartridges can offer the same page yield but sell at very different prices.
Let us look at the HP 64XL black ink cartridge and Brother LC103 black ink cartridge as an example. Both cartridges offer a page yield of approximately 600 pages but HP sells their cartridge for $37.99, while Brothers is only $16.79. Varying degrees of page yield and cartridge cost can lead to a very different printing bill at the end of the month depending on what printer you go with. Be sure to pay attention to cartridge operating costs when you are comparing potential printer models.
How Do You Trick Hp Ink Cartridges
Aside from disabling HP cartridge protection, you can also trick HP ink cartridges into working with a different printer. Thus, even though the ink cartridges are already locked on your old printer, you can still use them with a brand new printer with these steps:
1. Remove the new ink cartridge and reload the old ink cartridge back into the printer.
2. Wait for about 10 minutes before you proceed to the next step.
3. Remove the old ink cartridge and install the new ink cartridge again.
Your HP printer should be able to recognize your new ink cartridges by now. If it still doesnt, try these alternative steps instead:
1. Remove the new ink cartridge from the printer.
2. Please turn off your HP printer and detach its power cord for 10 minutes.
3. Reconnect the power cord but dont turn on the power button just yet.
4. Reload the new ink cartridge back into the printer.

Why Your Hp Printer Won’t Recognize New Ink Cartridge
HP has launched what is called a cartridge protection setting on its genuine ink cartridges. This system locks original ink cartridges into a specific printer so you wont be able to use them with a different printer. If you own an HP OfficeJet Pro 251dw printer and decide to purchase a brand new HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 ink printer that uses the same HP 950 and 951 cartridges, you wont be able to use these cartridges in the new printer since they are locked to your old one. With that being said, you wont be able to refill, recycle, or remanufacture the cartridges for use in a different printer because HP and its cartridge protection system wont allow it.

Is Toner Cheaper Than An Ink Cartridge
When youre choosing between an inkjet and laser printer, part of your calculation should include how much its going to cost in the long run. Laser printers use toner cartridges and inkjets use ink cartridges, and which one you need can affect the cost dramatically.
A toner cartridge will generally be more expensive than a similarly sized ink cartridge, Westover told us. He further explained that the volume to page ratios are much different, so you get far more pages out of toner than straight ink.”
He also emphasized the difference between the laser jet and inkjet printers. If youre using toner, youre using a laser printer, which means it will be better suited to different uses, primarily text and graphics rather than photo printing, Westover said.
Basically, its all about what you want to do with your printer and how that calculates into your buying decision. Our Inkjet vs Thermal vs Laser printer guide explains the pros and cons of each printer type if you need help making your decision.

Does Printer Ink Expire
If you dont use your printer very often, you may wonder if your ink will still be good after long periods of inactivity.
We asked Brian Westover, who reviews and writes about printers for Toms Guide, and he told us that the ink itself will last a long time, but old ink does have the capability to harm the printer.
Generally speaking, ink in the cartridge stays fine for some time. Eventually it will dry out. More often the problem is not the ink in the cartridge, but the ink in the outlet valve to come out of the cartridge. It can dry and create a blockage. Its even more of a problem in HP printers where the cartridge also has the print head in there, and all those valves are prone to that same sort of clogging, Westover explained.
If youre unsure about the ink in your printer check the expiration dates on the cartridge. Most ink cartridges expire between 18 and 24 months after you install them. So, even if you have plenty of ink, youll still want to change your cartridge at least every year or two. We also have a great article that explains more about how to maintain your printer.

Some products just do exactly what they say on the tin, and thats the case here with 499Inks which sells a huge variety of ink cartridges for, you guessed it, $4.99. While it doesnt have the same kind of variety as other websites, it still stocks a huge number of ink cartridges that will work with almost any printer model out there. Overall wed say that 499Inks is the cheapest discount ink seller that we tested.
The website isnt the most modern or sleek storefront that youll find, but its easy to navigate, letting you sort by brands and printer model. In addition to ink cartridges, 499Inks also has a limited selection of other products including toner .
Shipping within the US is free if you spend $49, which is basically the same as our top pick, 4InkJets. This is a fairly standard free shipping rate, but its worth noting that some others, like InkCartridges, do offer free shipping on all orders. InkCartridges accepts most major forms of payment including credit cards, personal checks, and PayPal.
499Inks impressed us with its social media presence – its active on Facebook and regularly posts deals there. You can also get 5% off your first order, and 499Inks offers a one-year guarantee on all its products, which isnt quite as good as 4InkJetss two-years, but its still impressive.
