What Is The Best 3d Printer Filament

How to store nylon 3D printing filament

Well, it depends. If youre a beginner to 3D printing, then ABS or PLA are your best bet, with PLA considered the easiest filament to 3D print with overall. PETG is considered a good middle ground between ABS and PLA, which is explained in more detail in each 3D printer filament type section below.

If youre looking to print crazy glow-in-the-dark, clear or conductive models, there are PLA blends with all of these attributes. PLA is considered the most versatile filament, and clear PLA filament, conductive PLA filaments and others are commonly used for specialized projects.

For those looking to print flexible parts, TPU, TPE and other flexible filaments exist for these uses. These are explained in more depth in their flexible filament section within this filament guide.

For experts looking to print with the strongest 3D printer filaments, PC, Nylon, Carbon fiber-filled, or even PEEK may be more appropriate though tougher filaments cost more.

Cheap vs expensive filaments

PLA and ABS are the cheapest 3D printer filaments, starting at around $20 per kilo. PETG is only marginally more expensive, costing around $25 per kilo, and is more durable than PLA.

Tougher materials like Nylon start to get more expensive, while the most expensive 3D printer filaments such as PEEK filament can set you back hundreds of dollars per kilo. This is due to its strength, heat resistance and industrial use, which well explain further later on.

Carbon Fiber Filled 3d Printer Filament

  • Recommended extruder temperature: depends on main material.

Carbon fiber filled 3D printer filaments are those which contain short fibers infused into the original filament such as PLA or ABS to give it extra strength and hardiness.

Other carbon fiber filled filaments exist, such as PETG, Nylon, and PC. Markforged, as well as releasing their first metal 3D printer recently, have pioneered FDM 3D printers which utilize these filaments.

These extremely strong fibers mean 3D printed parts will be stronger, retain their shape better , and best of all, lighter.

We recommend the following carbon fiber filaments:

  • PLA Glass extruder temperature: 180-220C, heated bed optional at 40C+
  • Glass Nylon / NylonG extruder temperature: 260-280C, heated bed at 60-75C

Perhaps considered fragile by those who only know glass from easily shattered windows or drinking glasses that break when dropped on the floor.

In fact, glass fibers actually provide excellent strength and durability, and are added to standard filaments to notably improve their strength for prototyping and other industrial uses.

We recommend the following glass fiber filament range:

PLA glass composite filaments can be made 50% stronger, and 2x less flexible with glass additions. PLA is typically seen as brittle, with glass providing more flexibility without breaking.

Why Do I Need To Store My Filament

Most 3D printing filament materials have this peculiar characteristic of being hygroscopic, meaning they tend to absorb moisture from the environment. While different hygroscopic materials also have different mechanisms that promote moisture uptake, polymers are especially prone due to their long-chain structures. Along the chain of these polymers are polar or charged segments, to which water molecules in the air readily bond to.

Of the common filament materials, PLA and nylon are especially notorious for being very hygroscopic. However, all materials used in 3D printing need to be stored deliberately to avoid the effects of moisture pickup.

  • Heated bed: optional at 40-60C
  • Heated chamber: not required

Now probably the most widely used filament for makers worldwide, PLA is a product of the RepRap movement, with co-creator Vik Olliver discovering the materials potential for 3D printing while trying to unearth a good filament for the first RepRap machines. 15 years later, PLA is used by millions worldwide to 3D print all types of models, and is known for being a very cheap filament as well as for being the only biodegradable filament.

Unlike ABS, PLA does not require a heated bed when 3D printing filament, but we still recommend using one for the best results. You dont need a heated chamber or enclosed build area, making it a favorite of DIY 3D printer owners which typically have open print areas.

Whereas 3D printer filaments like ABS and ASA are made of plastic compounds, PLA is made from renewable and biodegradable crops like corn starch. This makes PLA the undisputed eco-warrior favorite, and also means that when printing there is no foul smell or toxic fumes, unlike ABS.

PLA is also fairly easy to print, as it doesnt warp and rarely creates problems that cause a print to fail. It can ooze and string, but if this occurs it can be minimized by optimizing your 3D slicer settings.

We recommend the following PLA selections:

TPE or Thermoplastic Elastomers blend plastics and rubber together to create this special type of flexible 3D printer filament. These filaments are flexible and elastic far more so than other flexible 3D printer filaments like PP. Hence, these materials are used commonly to 3D print car tires, rubber bands, and also in the fashion industry.

  • We have a specialized article focused on TPU if you want to find out more about TPU filament.
  • For TPE and other flexible filaments, we have an article explaining every type of flexible filament.

There are several different types of TPE, the most popular being TPU . These flexible 3D printer filaments are great for absorbing shocks, as well as dampening vibrations.

They also have very good heat resistance properties, making TPU and other flexible filaments perfect for creating less rigid tools that can withstand high temperatures. When printing with TPE or TPU, youll notice it has fairly similar characteristics to PLA.

We recommend the following flexibles:

However, TPE can be difficult to print, and considerable care must be taken to maintain precise print settings, or the print could fail. TPU and other flexibles are also prone to small imperfections on printed models through stringing and oozing.

D Printer Filament Storage Keep Your Filaments In Top Condition For Longer

Aliexpress.com : Buy FlashForge 3d printer Filament 1kg ...

A writer needs a pen to write, a filmmaker cant shoot without a camera, and without working filaments, 3D printers are just big expensive bricks.

Like a bucket of paint, a blank page, or a sculpture block, 3D printer filaments are full of potential and waiting to be turned into something special. But like many materials, filaments have their own shelf lives.

Much like how we put milk in the fridge to keep it from spoiling, our choice of 3D printer filament storage preserves hygroscopic filaments from becoming wet. Not only do certain filaments wear away faster than most, but the consequences of poor filament storage range from warped and brittle prints to even damaging your 3D printer.

The shelf life and signs of wear differ between different filaments, and here were going to look at how different kinds of filament age, why they wear down over time, and what can be done to slow the process.

Pla Filament Storage Box

The most convenient way to protect your spools from air humidity is to store them in a box. If you keep the filament in the air, it will absorb moisture over time. Thus, it is better to use a storage box.

You can go with an airtight pet food container. Only make sure that your chosen box stays dry so that the stored product avoids contact with humid air.

Choose boxes that are about 40 cm x 30 cm or bigger. This way you can store spools that are up to 20 cm in diameter.

Best Options For Filament Storage

While airtight boxes may help make your materials last longer, there are some specialty filament storage options that provide solutions to common degradation problems like temperature control and vacuum sealing.

If youre using an airtight box, you can expect to keep most filaments for about a year before they age too much, but with specialty filament storage, you can make anything from PLA to Nylon last far longer.

Here are some of the best specialty filament storage options available today.

How Do I Tell If A Filament Has Become Worn Down

Most filaments will show the same telltale signs of age and degradation. If youre careful, youll be able to spot this age before you attempt to print with worn down filament, lessening the risk to your printer and projects.

Hygroscopic filament that has absorbed too much moisture wont be obviously larger on a simple observation, but you can tell if it has expanded too much by looking for holes in the filament thread. These holes are a sign of stretching and will indicate that the filament has expanded too much.

If you dont manage to catch these problems but are still a little doubtful as to how long youve had your filament, then you should listen out for a particularly off sizzling noise when feeding your filament into a heated nozzle.

If this noise isnt present, youll be able to tell if your filament is too wet by observing its bed adhesion. Wet filament will have poor bed adhesion and be very prone to warping, youll also notice that your prints come out with holes and misshapen parts.

The long-term effects of using worn or expired filament can be dangerous and expensive. Frequent clogs and extensive nozzle damage will occur if left unchecked.

Use Humidity Indicator Cards

Can you 3D Print with Trimmer Line?!

If you want to be certain that your filaments are kept moisture-free while in storage, you can throw in a humidity indicator card inside each vacuum bag. This card has color-changing indicators that you can use to easily check if the desiccant in each bag needs to be replaced. This is not a necessary step, but its worth considering since these cards are very cheap and can be used multiple items.
