The Heat Press Process

Introduction to Sublimation for Beginners

Okay. So now we can move onto the heat press process. I do all my shirts and fabrics, 400 degrees for 60 seconds. I highly suggest checking the temperature of your heat press, to do this you can use a little. Simply point it at the platen and press the button to get a reading.

It depends on where you shoot the thermometer on the platen, the temperature is going to vary a little bit here and there. But so long as its around 400 in the middle, youre good to go.;

Setting Up And Getting The Device Ready

The initial setup process on the SG500 did take me a few minutes hardly. It is pretty much straightforward. Just connect the power cord to the device, plug the same into a wall socket, and press the power button on the printer. Once the device is powered, it should ask you to insert the ink cartridges. Open the cap present on the front side of the printer which will give access to the cartridge area. Carefully slide in the provided cartridges one after the other and close the cap and hit OK on the printer.

If you wish to connect the printer to a computer for continuing with the setup process, you can do that. I prefer to do it wirelessly, so headed to the menu on the printer to access wireless settings. Inside the wireless option, you are shown the list of available networks. Choose the one that you wish to connect to, enter the credentials and click on OK. Once you are connected, you should be able to discover the printer by other devices in the network. Load the sublimation transfer paper into the printer and start printing.

HomeDye Sublimation InkSublimation Inks Types and How they are Used

Sublimation printing is a widely accepted and common application for high quality and brightly colored images and vivid designs. Sublimation printing requires special sublimation inks which are made from dye particles. These inks are grounded and then suspended in a liquid that carries them without dissolving them.

Sublimation inks are used by inkjet printers as it prepares to print on the sublimation paper. This causes the powdery dyes to heat up and vaporize into a gaseous form. These gaseous dyes diffuse and are allowed to permeate the printing surface, creating a photo quality print by gentle gradations. Once a color has been used, the roller of the printer is then reset for the next color to be printed. After all the colors have been printed , the substrate then makes a final pass over the printed image to give it a glossy outlook by lamination.

Dye sublimation inks are used to print reverse images on heat resistant sublimation paper for the final design. When they are about to be transferred to the polyester fabric, a heat press is used that operates at a temperature around 180C to 210C .

The dyes get separated from each other using a class of organic chemicals system often known as anthroquinone, azo, and phthalocyanine dye systems.

Which Types Of Materials Can Be Used For Sublimating

Relevant materials of sublimation printing are man-made polymers such as polyester and PVC. Hard materials, such as polyester-coated aluminium sheets, ceramic tiles, or soft materials, such as polycotton fabrics, can provide the optimum sublimating conditions. As a result, this approach is ideal for 100% polyester, polymer-coated, or polymer-blend materials with a high poly content, such as t-shirts, hoodies, and hard souvenirs such as a ceramic coffee mug, Christmas ornament, and canvas.

What Are The Best Shirts To Order For Sublimation

Here is a short list of my favorites.; I order from alphabroder.com mainly because they offer flex shipping for $5 to your nearest Fed Ex. I prefer the jersey knit types because they have a soft cotton feel.; They are also less likely to leave the imprint of the paper or heat press itself in the shirt than a dri wicking fabric. Dri wicking fabric tends to melt at high temperatures, so even though sublimation works on them, the pressed portion of the shirt will often leave a rectangle of slightly melted fabric from the platen that will not wash out.

    • Gildan G420 is a nice one.; Dont go too dark, though.; They also offer companion shirts for women and children .; Cost is $3-$6 per shirt depending on size and sales.
    • Jerzees offers a similar shirt called 21M.; Its companions are 21WR and 21B.; Same basic price as Gildan.
    • Next Level unisex tri-blend 3/4 sleeve raglans are nice.; Only 50% polyester, but very nice shirts.

    Computer & Rip Software

Printers for Heat Transfers & Sublimation Printing

Some sublimation printers include software necessary in setting up what will be printed out. These computer programs are called RIP software, short for Raster Image Processor. Not all printers include this addition, but RIP can be purchased separately. It needs to be stressed that the software must be compatible with the type of printer being used.

    How To Design For Sublimation

The first thing youll want to do is pick or create a design to sublimate on a blank. Sublimation works a lot like iron-on vinyl, in that it will sublimate the mirror image.

If you are simply applying a photo without any words, then flipping the image before printing it is probably not a big deal. With the sublimated mouse pad and pillow case I made, I didnt use the mirror image, I just printed them.

But for anything that has words on needs to be in a certain direction, youll need to print the image on mirror or flip horizontally setting.

You can either do this within your printing software if available or while you are editing your design in a photo software.

For my software, I just click on the Edit and Create tab and then on Edit.

Then I crop if needed and then click on Flip with the horizontal arrows.

I like to use befunky.com to design what I want to sublimate if I want to add words to a picture. Youll find the flip button under Options of the Text Properties. Youll have to flip the picture too.

Then for sublimation printer settings, I like to choose Plain Paper or Matte paper and then make sure the Output Quality is on High or Best.

Im using the feed of my dye sublimation printer, so Im loading where the blank side is facing up. The bottom side of the paper has words on it so you know not to print on that side.

Here is the image for the first sublimation project a puzzle! Notice the image is flipped and the color is very faded on the sublimation paper.

What Is Sublimation Printing? How To Get Started Today

So what can you sublimate onto? Great question!

Sublimation works by binding ink to polymers within the transfer material. So anything with a sufficiently high polymer content should be able to be sublimated onto!

    Specific types of fabrics include polyester, nylon, and spandex, but theres a lot more! You can also sublimate onto types of aluminum and ceramic if they are specially coated in a type of material that can accept the sublimation ink.;

When you are shopping for different sublimation blanks to use, make sure that they are specifically advertised or listed as sublimation ready. This is a great way to guarantee that you are working with the right types of materials. Some good listing services for sublimation blanks are Coastal Business and Johnson Plastics & Plus!

Do I Need To Purchase Heat Gloves From My Vendor

You will definitely need some kind of gloves to protect you from burns, however it is not necessary to purchase them from your vendor.; As a matter of fact, I no longer use the gloves that came with my original bundle.; They had rubbery tips that would end up melting onto my substrates!; I kept thinking I was doing something wrong with the press that was causing black splotches on my items.; It took me awhile to figure out what was happening.

Now I just use some winter mittens.; Thick gloves would be better, but I havent been able to locate my gloves since we moved last year.; I think Ill invest in some new sublimation gloves this winter.; Better yet, Ill wait until winter apparel goes on clearance!

You will not need gloves for all itemsjust the ones that conduct heat.; Talk to your high school science teacher about that!

Can I Use My Hp Printer For Sublimation

What is Sublimation? How do you convert an inkjet printer to a sublimation printer?!

If you have a HP home or office printer you will not be able to convert it for sublimation. Thats because most HP printers disperse ink onto paper using the thermal heat process.

This makes nearly all HP printers incapable of printing a clear image using sublimation ink because the ink would essentially bake onto the paper or gas out of the cartridges during the printing process.

HP does have a line of printers that CAN and DO support sublimation ink, and UV ink. This special line of printers can print onto sublimation paper or directly onto fabric. They are huge, expensive, industrial printers made for the job.

How much are these printers? HPs entry level industrial sublimation printer is about $7,000 USD, and that doesnt include inks. As you can see, these are not for hobby sublimators.

    Disadvantages Of Sublimation Technology

Sublimation printing requires special printers and sublimation ink, thus higher costs than many other processes, and the printers also work slowly. Materials other than polyester can only be used to a limited extent if they can be coated, which is not always possible. White colour cannot be printed either, so a white background is necessary if the motif is to contain white or light colours. In addition, a slight shrinkage of 1 4 % must be taken into account for sublimation in designs.

    As an alternative to sublimation printing, printing with white toner or white toner printers can be used. With toner transfer, the motifs are transferred onto a transfer foil and then connected with a so-called B-paper on the transfer press. The B-paper contains a heat-activated adhesive which bonds with the print on the A-foil. After separating the A-foil and the B-paper, the design can be transferred to any textile. In contrast to sublimation, the choice of material is not important here. A wide variety of textiles such as cotton, polyester, mixed fabric, felt but also other materials such as silk, wood or cardboard can be printed. Thanks to white toner, dark and colored backgrounds can also be printed.;

    Why Sublimation Printing Is Better

Sublimation offers more room for creativity and unique designs that utilize full color printing. The field of what can be printed on is also more fast compared to screen printing. For quick, simpler designs, screen printing can be useful. But, for the most part, sublimation is the better option in most cases.

Differences Between Heat Transfer Method Vs Sublimation Methods

There are a few differences between these two techniques, which you can find in this part of the article.

    • Paper Type

Of course, the biggest difference between these two methods is the kind of paper they use. Heat transfer method uses transfer paper and Sublimation method uses Sublimation Paper, and these two paper types are completely different from each other.

Transfer paper, needed in the Heat Transfer Method, has a coating of pigment and wax. Any regular ink in any inkjet or laser printer can be used to print on these papers, and the ink is stuck to the paper by the combination of wax and pigment.

When heat is applied, the ink is easily transferred to the garment or the fabric in a matter of minutes. In this same process, designs can be transferred to not just T-shirts and other clothing items, but also hats, bags, canvases and similar surfaces.

Sublimation paper, on the hand, is another special kind of paper that comes with a coating that includes 5% binder and 35% silica. This special coating not just holds the ink to the paper, but absorbs it completely, making the printing more steady.

When heat is applied to the paper, the ink melts and is transferred to any other surface you want the design on. This special trait of sublimation paper makes it possible to transfer your designs not just to fabric, garments and clothes, but to other hard surfaces.

    • Uses

Heat Transfer Method uses transfer papers, which can only be used to transfer your designs to fabric and clothing.
