What Does Sublimation Paper Do
One of the reasons that sublimation paper is souniquely different is because of its purpose. Sublimation paper isnt fordocuments like accounting pages or recipe books. Its actually a specialtypaper that is used to print patterns onto clothing and textiles.
Sublimation uses heat to vaporize ink and transfer it onto clothing. When the sublimation ink hits the fabric, the ink bonds with fabric fibers and becomes part of the fabric. So, if you just found sublimation paper and wanted to use it for office work, youre out of luck.
Which Printers Can Handle Sublimation Paper?
Since its clear that not all printers canhandle the sublimation process, its important to have a general idea aboutwhether or not your printer is compatible with this printing process. Here aresome general guidelines for printers that might work well with sublimationpaper:

Can You Sublimate On 50 50 Shirts
Dye sublimation, or DS, must be applied to polyester-based goods. The process will work on blends, but remember that if the garment is a 50/50 blend, then 50% of the ink will not saturate 50% of that garment. This results in a lot less color. Also, some polyester garments are not made specifically for sublimation.
Which Printers Are Suitable As Sublimation Printers
Printers suitable for sublimation printing usually work with water-insoluble disperse dyes . These are often also called sublimation printers or subli printers. Due to the consistency and temperature sensitivity of the ink, special sublimation printers are required. Regular inkjet printers can only be used with special water-based inks. However, changing between normal and special inks is not recommended due to contamination of the print heads and tubes with residues.

Ensure You Have The Right Equipment For The Job
Getting a sublimation printer for t-shirts does not mean you have everything you need for the job. You also need sublimation ink and paper. If you are using an inkjet printer, make sure you convert it to a sublimation printer before starting anything.
In addition, sublimation printing requires heat. So, you need to get a heat press that allows you to transfer the design from the print media to the t-shirt.
Double-check your inventory to make sure you have everything ready before you get started with your project so that once you start, you do not have to worry about anything else.

What Materials Can Be Sublimated
I cant emphasize this enough.
Dye sublimation is a very effective printing process that creates expert-level graphics, but there are limitations to what features it can be used with.
It is very important to note that dye sublimation should be used with polyester or polyester-coated material. While this can be confining to the kind of fabrics that can be applied, it leaves the field wide open for other non-fabric opportunities, such as trade show displays, tiles, and sporting goods.
These materials are unable to be printed on when using the other well-known printing processes, heat transferring and screen printing.
Some polyester-coated materials require different techniques when using the sublimated method.

What Sublimation Printers Do You Recommend
You can go two ways when it comes to desktop sublimation printers use a purpose-built sublimation printer or convert an inkjet desktop printer .
The most commonly-used purpose-built sublimation printers are Sawgrass printers. Specifically, the Sawgrass Virtuoso SG500 and the Sawgrass SG1000 .
Another option is the Epson SureColor F170 Dye Sublimation Printer, which is a newcomer to the market and made for dye sublimation inksunfortunately, availability currently seems limited on this printer, as I cant find it for sale on Amazon at all.
The most commonly-used converted printers are Epson printers, specifically the Epson EcoTank printers. The top EcoTank printer to convert is the Epson EcoTank 15000, rated second is the Epson EcoTank 2760 due to its low price point.
You can also convert the Epson EcoTank ET 3760 and the Epson EcoTank ET 4760 .
The main difference between the Sawgrass printers and the Epson printers will be quality and support. The purpose-built Sawgrass sublimation printers have a high print resolution. And you can get customer support if you have issues from Sawgrass when you run into issues.
If you go the conversion route, youre on your own because youve voided your warranty in the process of conversion.
Printed Items As Advertising Material
On the one hand, sublimation printing is an excellent way to embellish T-shirts with a desired motif for private purposes. On the other hand, printed textiles are also suitable as an extremely effective advertising medium. T-shirts offer a large area for company logos and sponsors, which provides high visibility. After all, an imprinted garment catches the eye much faster than a key fob or a ballpoint pen. At the same time, textiles can reach many people because, unlike billboards, people are mobile and come into contact with many people. If you also reach for high-quality fabrics, the T-shirt will be worn frequently and offers the recipient real added value.

Should I Purchase An Epson Or Sawgrass Printer
I have written an entire post on this very subject. In that post, I break it down for careful consideration. That said, if I had to choose between the two, I would stick with my Sawgrass printer. Yes, it is a little more expensive. The ink is also more costly. However, Ive been around enough to see the MANY ISSUES people come across with printers that are not designed specifically for sublimation. I must admit, I dread running low on ink, but the truth is it doesnt happen all that often. Sublijet ink, made for Sawgrass printers, lasts a long time and will give you a lot of bang for your buck.
I also created a quiz to help you decide between the two main printer brands.
The Number Of Ink Colors
Different printers are used for different tasks. The most common type of printer is a four-color theyre equally competent at basic jobs like printing documents, but if you want to do complex projects with finer detail, then you should invest in six or eight-color models as these provide more flexibility and are the professional choice when accomplishing work requiring higher quality resolution.

Ink Used By Dye Sublimation Printers
Dye ink printers are one of the cheapest types of printers. However, the quality they offer is likely to wash off, bleed, or fade off with time. The presence of ultra-violent exposure is also alarming. We only recommend using this printer if youre on a tight budget and will want to use it on small projects.
Compared to dye ink printers, sublimation-based ink tends to offer better options. However, it requires some level of expertise and experience to be handled effectively. One of the major effective products is pigment-based ink it offers the best performance than the ink-based printer.
It produces prints that are waterproof and resistant to humid conditions. So you can be sure of prints that wont fade away anytime soon. Although in terms of price, they are more expensive than dye and sublimation-based printers.

Choosing The Right Ink Set
When it comes to Epson printers, finding ink cartridges can be a challenge. Most of these printers use special ink cartridges that arent available at your local pharmacy or grocery store. The best way to ensure you find what you need is to buy an all-in-one set with matching inks and papers together when you buy your printer or first set of cartridges.
When buying inks separately, make sure they match your model number exactly as printed on your cartridge . To save money long-term and extend print life, consider single cartridge refill kitsor at least recycling spent original cartridges with one of many aftermarket alternatives like these ones from Handy Tech or PrinterOn instead of tossing them out entirely.
What Else Do You Need
There are a few more supplies you will need to actually make a project.
- You do need special paper when printing with sublimation ink. I will have a paper comparison soon but for now, I am using A-Sub Sublimation Paper.
- You can read more about sublimation blanks here in order to choose the correct type of material. Remember that sublimation needs polyester in order to be successful so you do want to choose the right substrate.
- Finally, you will need a heat source. A heat press or an EasyPress will work here but you want something that will get to a minimum of 400 degrees F.
- Heat Resistant Tape

Sublimation Printing On Glass
Since glass can break easily, it is important that more caution is taken when using dye sublimation printing. The heat press needs to be used carefully. The heat press pad can provide extra covering for the glass, but this isnt required.
Another thing that must be remembered when printing on glass is that the way glass heats up is different from the more conventional fabrics often used. Occasionally, the heat can cause foggy sections in the print, so halftones can be used to cover this issue.
Another solution to the problem is using textured material that leaves the impression of a clearer image. Something that makes this approach different is that the ink must be sublimated in the right-reading style, since the print transfers to the back of the glass and is viewed from the other side. Other materials require the image to be sublimated in a mirror-image format.
