BAG IT

Bag up your old printer and cables until youre ready to recycle it or until collection day, if you have one.

Find Out How Your Printer Stores Data

One clue your printer is storing data is if it has the ability to reprint documents you printed, scanned or copied days or weeks before. Maybe it lets you reorder jobs in the print queue or includes a private printing feature. Private printing is where you send the document, but it doesnt actually print until youre standing at the printer.

If your printer can do any of these, turn it off and turn it back on again. Then check if old print, scan, copy or fax jobs are still available for reprinting. Go to the menu to see if you can find a log of past prints or faxes. If the data is gone, then youre done however, if youre still seeing it, you should perform a hard reset.

The general way to do this is to turn the printer ON, then unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. Next, unplug the power cord from the wall. Wait at least 15 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the wall and then the back of the printer.

If it doesnt turn on automatically, turn it on with the power button. Check to see if your information is still available. If so, youll need to do a factory reset.

Warning: Aside from documents, a modern wireless printer connected to your network, or smartphone or tablet, might have stored connection information. You definitely want to make sure thats gone, which means either deleting it in the menu settings or initiating a factory reset.

Should You Sell Your Printer

Selling your printer can help you recoup some of your investment from an old machine. Unfortunately, the need for printers is not what it used to be, so you first should determine if your printer is worth anything before trying to sell it. Features like wireless printing or multifunction machines with scanners or fax capabilities tend to be more valuable. If your device has one of these features, selling it should not be an issue. Research what your specific printer is selling for on the aftermarket to help determine if it is worth it to you to try and sell it.

Once you have determined that your printer is worth some money, it is time to figure out where to sell it. The simplest solution for selling your printer is to find a refurbishment website or company in your area. These businesses repair and sell old technology and are the fastest way to get some cash for your printer. Other places to sell your printer include auction-style websites or social media marketplaces. Auction-style selling of your device may take more time and effort but could result in more money once the printer is sold.

Suppose the reason you are getting rid of your printer is to get a new one. In that case, you should check with the company you intend to purchase your next device from to see if they offer any kind of trade-in program.

  • Remove SD cards . Removing any added memory is an important step, especially if you plan to dispose of the printer. Remove any storage that didnt come with the printer to ensure your information stays safe and accessible.

    Recycling Empty Ink Cartridges

What to do with empty ink cartridges?

    Generally, there are two scenarios:

  • You have unused ink cartridges that you do not need. In this case, you can recycle those cartridges by selling them for cash.
  • You have used cartridges. In this case, it does not really matter if your ink cartridges are completely empty or have some ink left in them. You can recycle those as used ink cartridges using the methods described in this article.
  • Why Dispose Of Printer & Toner Cartridges Correctly

Old printers are worth to teardown!

You may think a simple ink or toner cartridge doesnt have any effect on the environment. But it does. Used cartridges actually have a hugely negative impact on the soil and water because of their toxicity. This makes them one of the worst and most common contaminants in cities.

At the same time, the plastic from these cartridges can easily last 400 years to disintegrate. And that can cause even more poisoning in the environment. Luckily, theres always a way to dispose of these cartridges properly. Or if you want, simply recycle them so they can be re-used.

If you do this, youll be preventing several years of contamination that a single cartridge may produce. And even as a small step into preserving the world it has a lot of value in the long term.

Printers are common computer accessories, and like most accessories will begin to experience performance loss and other problems over time. Whether you replace a printer because a newer model has additional features or because the old printer no longer works, you shouldn’t simply throw the device into the trash once it’s no longer needed. Proper disposal of computer accessories is environmentally friendly, and you may be able to help out a good cause by doing so as well.
