What Are Inkjet Printers
From mobile printing to dealing with the occasional ream of school, college or university work, inkjet printers are ideal for everyday home use.
Typically, inkjet printers deliver better photographs than laser printers, with a number of high quality inkjets making the most of everything from smartphone snaps to high quality DSLR photography. Generally, a full set of replacement ink cartridges are cheaper than laser toner too, making them perfect for home and photographic use.
Do You Need Printer Security Features
Printer security is often overlooked, but at your businesss peril. Hackers can gain access to a network through the printer, and sensitive documents in the paper tray can be seen by prying eyes. Many better business-centric models incorporate password protection, so that once a user launches a print job, they must enter a PIN into the printer to release it. This ensures that confidential documents dont fall into the wrong hands.

Whats the difference between laser and inkjet printers?
Inkjets create prints by placing thousands of tiny dots over every inch of the page. Printers with higher resolutions measured in dots per inch can place more dots on the page.
As their print heads usually need to move about to cover the page, inkjet printers tend to be slower than lasers. Also, because the ink takes a second or two to dry, they might be slower still when duplex printing.
Laser printers work by negatively charging a light-sensitive surface called an optical photoconductor drum. A laser then draws an image of the page to be printed onto the surface of the drum, discharging the areas it hits.
Negatively charged toner is then released on to the surface of the drum. This is attracted to the discharged areas drawn by the laser and repelled by the negatively charged background. A positively charged sheet of paper is passed over the drum, and the toner is transferred. This process occurs on all four drums for cyan, magenta, yellow and black to make up the final colour image. Finally, the paper is heated by a fuser, which melts the toner to the page.
Does high print resolution mean better quality?
In practice, you cant always predict print quality from a printers specifications. Our reviews tell you how good a printers output is across a range of tests, and highlight the kind of strengths and weaknesses you can only spot from hands-on comparisons.

Automatic double-sided printing can save you a lot of paper costs and wastage over the life of the printer.
A few inkjet printers can print onto transparencies this may require special ink.
A watermark function lets you print a light mark or outline on the page without requiring imaging software like Photoshop.

How Do I Connect My Printer To My Pc Or Mac
The simplest printers connect to a computer via a USB port. This is the easiest option if you only use one computer for printing at home, as you don’t need to worry about networking. You can also connect your printer directly to a computer via the Ethernet port if you’d prefer. But these methods limit your connectivity options to a single computer. That’s where networking becomes essential.
Most printers also have an Ethernet input which you can connect to a modem or router. Once connected, anyone on the home network can access the printer using via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Some support wireless Bluetooth connectivity as well, which is a workaround for any potentially complicated networking issues.
But adding a printer to your network isn’t exactly a plug-and-play task. So, we put together a step-by-step guide on how to connect your printer to a wireless network or Bluetooth which you can check out below.

How do I share my printer?
Printers can “share” access from multiple devices, as long yours is connected to a home network. There are two ways to access a shared printer.
Via the host computer
Via a home network
In either case, the connected devices need to have the relevant drivers installed, in order to identify the printer. These are either provided on disk, as part of the software/app, or as a download from the manufacturers website.

Don’t Miss: How Do You Make Your Printer Online
How Much Do You Plan To Print
If you print only a few pages a day, you don’t have to worry about how much a printer is designed to print, as defined by its recommended monthly duty cycle. If you print enough for the duty cycle to matter, however, don’t buy a printer that doesn’t include that information in its specifications. Figure out how much you print by how often you buy paper and in what amounts. Then pick a printer designed to print at least that much.
Also consider minimum and maximum paper size and whether you need a duplexer to print on both sides of the page. For input capacity, a useful rule of thumb is to get enough capacity so you should need to add paper no more than once a week. If you often print on envelopes, checks, or letterhead, look for a printer with multiple drawers so your printing isn’t slowed down by needing to unload regular paper and load your specialty media.
What Is An All
You can buy straightforward inkjet or laser printers, but a device that scans and copies as well wont cost you a whole lot more. Most have wi-fi connectivity so that you can print from several PCs or laptops, not to mention tablets or smartphones. Some include a fax function, too.
Some all-in-one printers have an automatic document feeder on top, which is handy for scanning and copying multi-page reports.
- Pros Can scan, photocopy and fax as well as print
- Cons Tend to be larger models that take up more space

Choosing a printer may sound easy, but once you start diving into all of the available features, making a choice can quickly get daunting. Do you need a basic printer, or do you want it to have scanning and copying abilities, as well? How do you choose between inkjet and laser technology? Whats the difference between a $200 model and a $500 model? Here are some pointers to help you find both the right category of printer and the right model within that type.
Which Ink Type Is Best
For inkjet printing on paper, the main choice is between dye-based and pigment-based inks. Dye-based inks are traditionally cheaper, brighter and offer a wider range of colours, while pigment-based inks are more expensive and fade-resistant. Both will run when wet. Where it can become confusing is that printer specs dont always highlight which ink the model takes. As a rule, black inks are usually pigmented, and colour inks dye-based the best photo printers will use pigment-based inks, though, so that the photos dont fade.

What’s The Best Printer For Home
You’ll find two types of printers for sale. Standard, which is just a printer, and multifunction . These are an all-in-one device better suited for home offices, as they let you print, scan, copy and even fax if you’re living in 1995.
If you need to scan or copy documents from time to time, consider a separate scanner as they cost around $150. Having a separate scanner means one less point of failure for your printer, but you’ll need the computer to be switched on to use it, and it may not be as simple to make copies.
Multifunction printers have additional features compared to standard models but they’re typically more expensive.
