How To Check What Type Of Ink Your Printer Accepts

When you purchased a printer for your office, it came with an instruction manual that indicated the type of ink the machine accepts. The manufacturer recommends certain types of ink because the incorrect kind can produce inferior printing results. In some cases, the wrong ink cartridge won’t fit in the machine or the printer will refuse to accept it. Even if you misplaced your printer’s manual, you can still find out the type of ink the machine needs.

  • 1.

Read your printer’s instruction manual, if you have it. The manual will usually tell you what kind of ink the printer requires.

  • 2.

Inspect the printer’s packaging or the packaging of the latest ink cartridge you’ve purchased. The ink type is normally printed on both boxes.

  • 3.

Look for the ink reference card that came with your printer, if applicable. Some printer manufacturers, such as HP, put this card in the box with your printer.

  • 4.

Open the printer and allow the ink carrier to move to the center of the machine. Look at the product number printed on each cartridge. If you don’t see a number on the top of a cartridge, remove it from the printer. Look for the number printed on a sticker on the side of the cartridge.

  • 5.

Determine your printer’s make and model. If you don’t have the documentation that came with the printer, inspect the machine for a model number printed on the bottom, back or side.

  • In the Windows Notification Area , right-click the printer icon.
  • In the printer menu, select the “properties” or “preferences” option.
  • In the printer settings window, the ink or toner levels are displayed for the currently-installed cartridge.
  • If you don’t see the ink or toner levels in the settings window, look for and click the button or option labeled “Ink Levels,””Toner Levels,” or something similar.

    FAQ: Printers in Crafting

Printer ink is designed for use in inkjet printers. Printer ink cartridges are filled with liquid ink that comes in a variety of colors and is transferred to paper during the printing process. Printer ink is usually more cost-effective and easier to replace than printer toner. Be sure to check the model of the ink cartridge your inkjet printer requires before purchasing.

What Is A High Yield Ink Cartridge And Why Do They Cost More

High yield ink cartridges have a higher page yield than standard ink cartridges. You can generally print more pages with this cartridge than a standard cartridge. An HP 940 Black Original Ink Cartridge can print 1000 pages, while the HP 940XL High Yield Black Original Ink Cartridge can print 2200 pages. HP printers can use both standard and high yield ink cartridges, as long as the correct ink cartridge model number is selected.

    Best For Photos: Lemero

If you’re a photographer or routinely print color documents with photos included, these remanufactured ink cartridges from LEMERO should make the top of your shortlist. For the money, you’ll get one black and one tri-color cartridge. The black cartridge can render 480 pages, and the tri-color does 330 pages.

These cartridges excel at printing out bright colors, smudge-free text, and photos so detailed we wondered if they surpassed the quality of the more expensive OEM cartridges. Whether you’re using all-purpose paper or high-gloss photo paper, you won’t be disappointed with the colors or deep blacks from this set.

If we have to nitpick, we must admit that we needed to clean the printer heads once during these cartridges’ lifecycle. That’s something we occasionally need to do with HP’s offerings as well, but it was a given with these.

    Searching By Ink Cartridge Name

Have you ever wondered what do the numbers on ink cartridges mean? The number on your ink cartridge is the cartridge model number and this is one way to know what ink your printer takes. In this part, we will tackle how to find the ink cartridge number. If you have an empty ink cartridge, you can simply look on the top or front of the cartridge itself for its ink/toner cartridge number and/or manufacturers code. Cartridge model number is composed of numbers and sometimes, a combination of numbers and letters.

You also have the option to purchase a standard or a high yield ink. If there’s ‘XL’ after the cartridge number, it means that the cartridge can print more pages than the standard yield or non-XL ones. The XL cartridges are also called the ‘high yield’ cartridges.

The Difference Between Toner And Ink

What Kind of Printer Do I Use
    Toner Cartridge
Does not dry out or clog Can dry out and clog
    Long/unlimited shelf life
    Lower initial cost

Without getting too complicated, laser printers use a different than inkjet printers.

Inkjet printers, as the name implies, squirt droplets of liquid ink onto paper to form an image. Laser printers etch an image onto a rotating drum which attracts charged particles of dry toner. The rolling drum transfers the image to the paper and the toner is fused to the paper with heat and pressure rollers.

Thats why prints that come out of laser printers are warm.

Lets break it down this way:

    • Laser printers use toner cartridges
    • Inkjet printers use ink cartridges
    • Toner cartridges contain dry powder
    • Ink cartridges contain liquid ink
    • Toner cartridges are bigger than ink cartridges
    • Toner cartridges typically have page yields ranging from 2,000- 20,000 pages
    • Ink cartridges typically have page yields of about 500 pages
    • Toner cartridges dont expire
    • Ink cartridges expire
    • Toner doesnt dry out due to infrequent use
    • Ink can dry out and clog due to infrequent use

Should I Buy An Inkjet Printer

Inkjet printers are common in households. They print high-quality color images and text, have relatively affordable ink cartridges and have slower, more precise printing speeds. Most models print up to 16 pages per minute. Inkjet printers are best suited for home use and small businesses that print a mixture of documents and images. If youll be printing at high volumes or if your printer will be used by many people, an inkjet printer may not be best due to slower speeds.

Can You Use Remanufactured Ink Cartridges In Hp Printers

Remember that printer manufacturers like HP are prohibited by law to prevent you from using compatible or remanufactured cartridges in your printer. Nevertheless, they have successfully got around the rules by devising clever systems like the cartridge protection setting, which renders generic ink cartridges useless.

But you may prefer using generic HP ink cartridges over original HP ink cartridges as they are cheaper while generally offering comparable print results. If such is the case, disable the HP cartridge protection or trick HP ink cartridges using the steps above.

    Learn More:

It will depend on what type of other ink cartridge you intend to use on your HP printer. If its a third-party or generic compatible/remanufactured ink cartridge of the same model number, then yes, it will work. Sometimes, you will encounter some error message warning indicating your use of a none-OEM ink cartridge. If this happens, just hit OK to bypass the message and continue printing using your generic ink.

If youre using a different brand, then it wont work. You cant use Canon ink cartridges to replace HP ink cartridges and vice versa. You also cant interchange different ink cartridge models, even if they are from the same brand. Thus, you cant use HP 301 inks in an HP 304 printer even if theyll fit. The printer will display an inks not recognized message and the like, and there/s no way for you to bypass it.

    Pigment Based Inkjet Cartridges

How to use Cricut Print then Cut

For best results when printing on most of our inkjet printable labels we suggest that you use Pigment Based Inks instead of Dye Based Inks. Using Pigment Based Inks is actually a requirement when printing on our White PolyGloss inkjet labels and our Clear Glossy Inkjet Labels. Most of our label products have a special top coating that when used with pigment based inks form a bond that helps “merge” the inks into the coating, creating a smudge proof label. Or as in the case of our White PolyGloss Labels, an extremely water-resistant label.

The exception to this rule is with Primera Roll label printers. Our research has found that the opposite is true and Dye based inkjet work best as opposed to Pigment based inks.

So how do you know if your printer is using Pigment or Dye based inks?

For starters we always suggest requesting samples so you can try out for printing quality, how the adhesive adheres to your product and just the overall look. Samples can be requested by visiting our Contact Us page.

How Toner Vs Ink Adheres To Paper

So how does ink work in a modern printer? In an inkjet printer, the print cartridges consist of a series of tiny chambers, each containing a heating element. An electrical current heats up the element, which causes ink to bubble within the chamber. The increase in pressure propels or sprays a droplet of ink onto the paper from the appropriate chamber.

Instead of being sprayed onto a page, toner is released onto paper and fused using heat and an electrostatic charge. In a laser printer model, a laser beam scans back and forth across a drum inside the printer, creating agitation and building up a pattern of static electricity. The laser creates areas of negative charge wherever toner powder should be applied. The toner has a positive electrical charge, so it can be fused to the parts of the photoreceptor drum that have a negative charge.

Since plastic melts at a very low temperature, the combination of heat and pressure from the roller causes it to adhere easily.

Type Of Ink For Laser Printer

Laser printers rely on toner to create the image on any printed page. Polymers, organic compounds, and a variety of minerals tend to be the key components of printer toner.

    • How It Works. Toner is a powdered pigment that adheres to the paper once it’s heated.
    • Best Qualities. Printer toner affords convenience and swift, precise printing along with fine quality results for both images and text. As a bonus, toner won’t dry out and the stuff lasts for ages, allowing you to print on demand for what feels like forever.
    • Cost Considerations. When comparing different types of ink for printers, toner tends to be more expensive but longer lasting, so the upfront costs often balance when it comes to the lifespan of the toner cartridges.
    • Possible Issues. Laser printers and laser cartridges may be less accessible to some based on their higher out-of-the-gate price point.
    • Best Uses. Printing lots of text-based documents works especially well with a laser printer. Laser printers handle marketing materials, company letterhead, labels and other business documents with ease.

Should You Buy Remanufactured Ink Cartridges

What Ink Do I Use To Print Film For Screen Printing

Remanufactured cartridges are old OEM cartridges carefully refilled and repaired at a third party manufacturers facility. Damaged parts, if any, are replaced.

These ink cartridges are functional and much cheaper than their OEM counterparts. These recycled ink cartridges also contribute in lowering the amount of e-Waste that ends up in our landfills.

    Individual Hp Ink Cartridges

A set of individual ink cartridges consists of four separate color ink tanks available in black, cyan magenta and yellow. There are two big differences between these cartridges and the black and tri-color cartridges we just reviewed. The first difference is the cost savings of replacing each cartridge color separately. Many printer users prefer individual ink cartridges because each color can be replaced as needed. This ends up being far more cost effective than replacing a tri-color cartridge that needs to be replaced when any color is low. Another major difference is the location of the printhead. We mentioned earlier that black and tri-color cartridges have an integrated printhead that is built into the cartridge. Individual ink cartridges do not have a built-in printhead. Instead, the printhead is built into the printer. Both types of printheads work equally well, but its important to note, if you buy a printer with a built-in printhead, it may wear out over time and need to be replaced. Often the cost of replacing a printhead is more expensive than buying a new printer, so keep that in mind when weighing your printer options. Routine maintenance will keep your printer and printheads running smoothly. For some simple cleaning and maintenance tips, check out the HP printhead cleaning section later in this article.
