Choosing The Right Weight Of Printer Paper

Paper Sizes Explained

A useful rule to follow when selecting the right paper weight is the heavier the paper and the thicker the sheet, the more substantial and sturdy the paper is. A papers thickness is also known as its caliper.

Non-cardstock paper is called bond or text, while cardstock paper is referred to as cover, bristol or index.

From lightest to heaviest, here are the most common paper weights and their common uses:

Paper Thickness And Weight

In the United States, paper thickness is measured by its weight based on 500 sheets, which is one ream. The reasoning behind this system is that paper is extremely thin, and it is difficult to measure its width, so thickness can be easily determined since 500 sheets of thick paper weigh more than 500 sheets of thin paper.

However, there can be variation from one company to another since the paper is weighed before it’s cut. You’ll notice that 500 sheets of 20-pound paper doesn’t actually weigh 20 pounds. The shorthand “#” is often used for pounds on paper packaging.

  • Bond paper: The most common paper used in offices today, this is to what most people refer when they describe printer paper. Bond paper comes in 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 pounds.
  • Text paper: This is used in commercial printing, usually for brochures and stationery. It comes in 50, 60, 70, 80 and 100 pounds.
  • Book paper: Used primarily for printed books, catalogs and magazines, book paper comes in sizes ranging anywhere between 30 and 115 pounds.
  • Cardstock: Also known as cover paper, this is thick, stiff paper resembling light cardboard. It comes in sizes ranging from 60 to 120 pounds.
  • Index paper: Used for index cards, postcards and folders, this comes in 90, 110 and 140 pounds.
  • Tag paper: Used primarily for things like signs, price tags and door hangers, this is very thick and sturdy paper. It comes in thicknesses ranging from 100 to 200 pounds.

Printer Paper Dimensions Abroad

Outside of the United States and Canada, another system of paper sizes is commonly used. This size system is based on metric measurements, and a size known as A0, is designed to be 1 square meter in area. It is 1189 millimeters by 841 millimeters.

Other sizes include A1, A2, A3, A4 and so on. Each size can be generated from the previous size by halving the length of the longest size and preserving the length of the shorter size. For example, A1 is 841 millimeters by 594 millimeters, since its longest side is the same as the shortest side of A0 paper and the shorter side is half the length of A0 paper’s longest side.

This means that two A1 sheets can be printed on one A0 sheet four A2 sheets can be printed on one A0 sheet, and so on. The most commonly used format in this series is A4, which is essentially the equivalent of U.S. letter-sized paper. The A4 sheet It is 297 millimeters by 210 millimeters, which is 8.3 inches by 11.7 inches, which is slightly taller and slightly less wide than the letter-sized paper format of 8 and 1/2 inches by 11 inches.

Printer Paper Dimensions In The United States

If you’re in the United States or Canada, the most common paper size you’ll encounter is letter-sized paper, which is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Generally, if someone asks you to print a document for business, government or academic purposes, the paper size of 8.5 inches by 11 inches is the size they’ll expect to see, unless they say otherwise. It’s the most common paper size available for your printer at most office supply stores or stationery stores.

Documents are almost universally printed in portrait format, meaning that the longer dimension of the paper is treated as the vertical dimension. The alternative format, known as landscape format, generally is used only for printing specialized-use documents, such as charts, photos or other graphics.

Other common sizes you may encounter include legal size, which is 8.5 inches by 14 inches. This format is the same width as letter paper, but the paper is three inches longer on the long side. As the name suggests, it’s sometimes used as the standard paper size for certain types of legal documents.

Another paper size called ledger or tabloid, is 11 inches by 17 inches. When the paper is used in portrait orientation, it’s called tablet paper when it’s used in landscape orientation, it’s called ledger. As the names imply, it’s sometimes used for newsletters and for financial documents, as well as for other charts that won’t fit nicely on letter-sized paper or on legal-sized paper.

Can Printing Smaller Sheets Save Money

Standard Frame Sizes In Centimeters

Although using smaller paper sizes can help you save some money and cut down on environmental waste, the resulting text size sometimes ends up too small. Plus, since paper is inexpensive, buying smaller paper sizes wont save you as much money as you think.

Instead, focus on reducing your overall ink costs by buying laser ink cartridges or choosing remanufactured ink cartridges. Ink is more expensive than paper, but its easy to secure discounts if you use a retailer that gives discounts when you stock up. Even color printing projects become much more affordable with the right provider.

Also, take good care of your printer with some basic maintenance for how to get more ink out of your cartridge. By minimizing wasted ink, youll be able to print large projects of any size while staying within your budget.

Are There Other Standard Paper Series

While A-size paper is the most commonly used around the world, there are other paper sizes as well. ISO 219 also includes a B-Series and C-Series. The B-Series has slightly wider dimensions, which makes them a great size for posters. The C-Series are also a bit wider than the A-Papers, which is why they are often used for envelopes: A-Series papers can easily slide inside of envelopes with C-Series dimensions.

Paper Sizes And Special Papers

There are various special papers. Glossy usually used for printing Photos and usual Paper Sizes are mentioned as per International Paper Sizes standard. Matt, archival like Demi in my case needs special care to print. Select manually the quality and Paper Sizes from the software interface. For example, most commonly used Paper Sizes will be supported by both Laser printer and Inkjet Printer but Laser Printer can melt down a special paper intended for Inkjet with plastic coating.

Ansi Standard Paper Sizes

ANSI defined a regular series of paper sizes based around theLetter format, with this becoming the A size and larger sizes being B,C,D & E. Surprisingly these ANSI standard sizes were defined in 1992 well after the ISO standard sizes.Letter format paper was originally defined as a national standard in 1921 and was formally adopted by the US government in the 1980’s.ANSI A sized paper is commonly referred to as Letter and ANSI B as Ledger or Tabloid.

Unlike the ISO standard sizes which have the single aspect ratio of 1:root2, ANSI standard sizes have two aspect ratios 1:1.2941 and 1:1.5455 which means that enlarging and reducing between the sizesis not as easy as with the ISO sizes and leaves wider margins on the enlarged/reduced document.

Who Determines Paper Size Standards

How to select paper size for printing a document in Word 2016

In the United States, standard paper sizes are decided by the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI. The norm in which all standardized paper dimensions can be found is called ANSI Y14.1.

In the rest of the world, the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, presides over the regulation of paper sizing. ISO 216 is the internationally recognized norm for paper sizes.

Other paper standards do exist. And different countries have their own institutes responsible for developing norms. But the ANSI and ISO systems are the most common paper size standards around the world.

What Are Sra Paper Sizes

ISO 219 includes a series of RA and SRA paper sizes. SRA stands for Supplementary Raw Format A, and these standard sizes are meant to be used for documents that are to be trimmed.

SRA paper sizes include an additional bleed area and have dimensions that are exactly 105% the size of the corresponding A-Series paper sizes. That means SRA4 has dimensions 5% greater than A4, SRA3 has dimensions 5% greater than A3, SRA2 has dimensions 5% greater than A2, and SRA1 has dimensions 5% greater than A1, etc. etc.

Can You Use Thermal Paper In A Normal Printer

Using thermal paper in a regular printer is not advisable. Thermal paper is designed to work in thermal printers, which use heat instead of ink. It is also thinner and more slippery. Thus, a regular printer would probably not produce good results. The same applies to using regular paper in a thermal printer.

What Is A4 Paper

A4 paper is the standard paper size used worldwide, with the exception of countries in North America. The US, Canada, and Mexico have standardized 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper, typically referred to as “letter” size. A4 paper is slightly longer, at about 8.27 inches by 11.75 inches . This and other types of “A” paper sizes are based on a metric measurement system and established through international European standards.

Basis for Different Sizes

A4 paper and similar sizes are based on metric measurements. An A0 piece of paper, when spread flat, has an area of one square meter and is the largest size at 84.1 cm by 118.9 cm . A0 paper, cut in half, becomes size A1 at about 59.4 cm by 84.1 cm . A1 cut in half is A2, and so on through A6.

This produces paper with different sizes, but all with a 1:1.414 height-to-width ratio. European standards also cover B paper sizes. B0 paper is a meter wide and 1.414 meters tall B1 is B0 cut in half, and so forth through B5.

Size and Standardization

Paper sizes were standardized in Germany in 1922, and adopted throughout Europe in 1930, via Standard 216 of the International Standards Organization . The ISO is a non-governmental entity that publishes international standards. While the standards have been updated occasionally, the sizes used have been maintained since the early 20th Century.

Ledger/Tabloid paper, and its closest ISO paper size equivalent A3, is often used in record keeping. Wills, deeds, and other important financial transactions are typically printed on ledger paper, whose slightly heavier weight gives it a higher degree of durability and permanence.

Leger Paper is also used for small posters, flyers, and brochures.

Simplified Enlargement And Reduction

Many copy machines have preset magnification factors for enlarging or reducing a copied document in order to print it on a different paper size. These presets typically take the form of buttons labelled A3A4 and so forth. This eliminates wasted margins and saves you the trouble of trying to guess the right magnification factor, which can lead to a heap of misspent paper. Below is a table of the magnification factors between the most common A sizes in case the copiers at your local library do not have such presets.

What Is Paper Weight

The term paper weight, also known as basis weight, refers to the papers thickness and sturdiness, not the individual sheets actual weight. The weight of printer paper is measured in pounds per 500 sheets and grams per square meter .

The most common weight of printer paper is 20 lbs., while most fine printer, business and stationery paper weighs anywhere from 20-32 lbs. Fine paper refers to a class of paper grades that range from 100 percent cotton to processed wood pulp grade.

To give you an idea of what types of paper are considered lightweight, medium-weight and heavyweight, here are some distinguishing characteristics and examples of each.

What Are The Differences Between Iso Standards And North American Standards

There are several key differences between the paper sizes laid out in ISO 216 and those used in North America.

Most importantly, North American standards are designed for the imperial measurement system rather than the metric system. Letter size paper in the USA measures an easy-to-remember 8.5 by 11 inches. To compare, the closest ISO equivalent, A4 paper, measures 210 × 297 mm. That equals 8.27 x 11.7 when expressed in inches, which is a decidedly less user-friendly number.

Another important difference between North American and international paper sizes is the aspect ratio. ISO A-Series paper always has an aspect ratio of 1 to 2. This means that the height and width relate to each other in the same way that the side and diagonal of a square do.

Standard paper sizes in the United States, however, do not have a consistent aspect ratio.

The differences are hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Most people wouldnt perceive the difference in dimensions between standard US letter size paper and ISO A4 paper unless they were placed side by side.

The Systems In Existence

Though other paper size standards exist, there are two predominant systems in use today. They are the international and North American systems.

As the term implies, the international standard, also known as the ISO 216 standard, is used throughout the world. It is based on an aspect ratio of the square root of two, like the side of a square and its diagonal. This idea was originally proposed by the German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg in 1786. In 1922, Dr. Walter Porstmann brought Lichtenbergs ideas into being in Germany. This new standard was known as the DIN 476 standard. The system became widely used during World War II. The most commonly used ISO paper size is A4.

The North American system is used primarily in the USA and Canada. The current sizes are based on traditional sizes such as Letter and Legal . The names of North American sizes have started with ANSI ever since the adoption of ANSI/ASME Y14.1 by the American National Standards Institute in 1995. Though the sizes now begin with ANSI, they are nevertheless based on the traditional sizes.

Paper Sizes Quick Lookup

Iso A Series Paper Size Chart

As you can see, the A4 paper size is essentially between the U.S. Letter and Legal size at 8.3 x 8. 11.7 in. One perk of all the sizes based on the A0 paper size is that all sheets can be scaled in relation to one another. For instance, an A4 size can be folded into an A5 paper size brochure. Similarly, an A3 paper size can be folded down exactly into an A4.

Theres also a C series in ISO standards that are used only for envelopes. Each size in the C series is slightly larger than the corresponding size in the A series. Therefore, a C4 envelope is slightly larger than an A4 sheet of paper so that the latter can fit inside the former. Note that though some common U.S. envelope sizes are labled A-2, A-6, etc., these are not related to the ISO A series. In this case, the A stands for Announcement, which is a type or style of envelope.

The B series is larger than the A, and though it is less common in office settings, it is commonly seen in printing presses in many countries around the world other than America.

Paper Choice & Weight For Poster Printing

Choosing the right paper to print your posters is essential. The first thing to note is: Always use Acid free paper for poster printing. You do not want your printed poster to turn yellow after a while, therefore the papers you use for printing should be acid free.

The best stock to use for your poster depends on many factors, that are not defined by hard rules. These factors include:

  • Costs: Are you looking to print your poster on expensive canvas or 100% cotton paper to display it in your living room? Or do you need a batch of 1000 posters printed? There are many different materials available for poster printing and prices/quality can vary greatly.
  • Personal Preference: Some people prefer shiny high gloss paper, while others like matte finishes. This really is a matter of personal preference. Also realize that some papers have a specific tone to them, either being cool or warm . This can impact what the final product looks like greatly
  • Location and Longevity: Some posters will be displayed indoors where they are protected from the elements while posters displayed outdoors need to be tougher.

As a rule you want to make sure to use stock that is heavier then default printer papers. Not only does this add durability to your poster, it will age much better then standard paper, and your poster is much easier to flatten.

We recommend to choose paper weight of at least 60lbs or above for your poster project. This really is the minimum weight you should choose for production.
