The leader in aircraft manufacturing Boeing knows that producing aircraft is time-consuming and complicated. Not every tool needed to manufacture, for instance, wings, is available on the market. Special equipment is required for a plane to be built. This is exactly why 3D printing is the answer.

Thanks to 3D modeling, engineers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in cooperation with Boeing were able to produce highly customized and at the same time, the largest ever solid 3D printed object. The part needed was a trim tool. The purpose of this tool is to hold Boeing 777xs wing skin while its being machined and drilled. The tool holds the title of the largest 3D printed object in Guinness Records.

To be able to produce it, the researchers developed Big Area Additive Manufacturing 3D printer. The machine took only 30 hours, instead of 7 days, to produce a large-scale trim tool. The component is a combination of 80% ABS plastic and 20% carbon fiber. It weighs 745 kg, is 5.3 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 0.5 meters tall. The 3D printed tool showcases how much potential lays in additive manufacturing for the aerospace industry.

Shapeways then prints the model in-house and mails it to the buyer.

Since founding, Shapeways has received over $100M in funding the most recent a $30M Series E funding round in April 2018 based on a valuation of $191.5M. This funding has allowed Shapeways to expand into a variety of 3D printing technologies, now hosting SLA, SLS, DMLS, PolyJet, and Binder Jetting, and compete with companies such as Materialise NV, Protolabs, Sculpteo, 3D Hubs and more. The original 3D printing company 3D Systems was founded by Chuck Hull to commercialize stereolithography all the way back in 1986, two years after he invented the process. Since their first industrial 3D printer the SLA-1 3D Systems has grown exponentially to annual revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Whats more, the SLA-1 has since been declared an engineering landmark by the ASME, further displaying the influence 3D Systems have had on the industry.

Despite the multitude of new companies who have since entered the market, the American 3D printer manufacturer remain an effective competitor. A clever strategy mixing innovation with high-profile acquisitions has proven smart, and the company is now worth around $1.33bn. The most important acquisitions include DTM in 2001 , Z Corp in 2011, Phenix Systems in 2013, and Simbionix and LayerWise in 2014.

How Big Can 3d Printers Be

D Printed Boat: The Manufacturing Process

The UMaine teams worked with Ingersoll Machine Tools to develop their 3D printer, it presents a printing volume of 30 x 6.70 x 3 meters and a speed of 227 kilos per hour. The print head is fixed on a gantry mounted on rails, making it easier to move along the length. As of today, the manufacturer is not offering a wide-range of compatible materials, however the machine was designed to use raw materials of biological origin, in particular cellulose from wood. Apparently, the 3D printer was designed for rapid prototyping applications for civil, defence and infrastructure applications.

In order to demonstrate the capabilities of their large format 3D printer, the teams created the 3D printed boat 3Dirigo. Umaine Composites Center Receives Three Guinness World Records Related To Largest 3d Printer

More than 250 federal and state officials, business executives, University of Maine System leaders and community members were on hand to witness the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center receive three Guinness World Records on Oct. 10 for the worlds largest prototype polymer 3D printer, largest solid 3D-printed object, and largest 3D-printed boat.

The event culminated with the worlds largest 25-foot, 5,000-pound 3D-printed boat, named 3Dirigo, being tested in the Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory, an offshore model testing facility equipped with a high-performance wind machine over a multidirectional wave basin. The ceremony was a milestone in UMaines leadership in cutting-edge composite material research and development, and commitment to use Maines vast natural resources to drive innovation that generates major economic development opportunities in the state and beyond.

The new 3D printer is designed to print objects as long as 100 feet by 22 feet wide by 10 feet high, and can print at 500 pounds per hour. The one-of-a-kind printer will support several ambitious initiatives, including development of biobased feedstocks using cellulose derived from wood resources, and rapid prototyping of civilian, defense and infrastructure applications.
