Largest Solid 3d Printed Object

What could be the largest 3D printer in the world may be found right here in Ohio

The leader in aircraft manufacturing Boeing knows that producing aircraft is time-consuming and complicated. Not every tool needed to manufacture, for instance, wings, is available on the market. Special equipment is required for a plane to be built. This is exactly why 3D printing is the answer.

Thanks to 3D modeling, engineers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in cooperation with Boeing were able to produce highly customized and at the same time, the largest ever solid 3D printed object. The part needed was a trim tool. The purpose of this tool is to hold Boeing 777xs wing skin while its being machined and drilled. The tool holds the title of the largest 3D printed object in Guinness Records.

To be able to produce it, the researchers developed Big Area Additive Manufacturing 3D printer. The machine took only 30 hours, instead of 7 days, to produce a large-scale trim tool. The component is a combination of 80% ABS plastic and 20% carbon fiber. It weighs 745 kg, is 5.3 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 0.5 meters tall. The 3D printed tool showcases how much potential lays in additive manufacturing for the aerospace industry.

Shapeways Estimated Market Cap $1915m

  • Founded: 2007
  • Company based: Holland/USA

Though now based in New York, Shapeways is a prominent 3D printing service founded in Holland back in 2007 by Peter Weijmarshausen. Similar to i.materialise, Shapeways allows 3D designers to sell their designs online through their marketplace and earn a percentage of the profits whenever someone orders a 3D print of their design. Shapeways then prints the model in-house and mails it to the buyer.

Since founding, Shapeways has received over $100M in funding the most recent a $30M Series E funding round in April 2018 based on a valuation of $191.5M. This funding has allowed Shapeways to expand into a variety of 3D printing technologies, now hosting SLA, SLS, DMLS, PolyJet, and Binder Jetting, and compete with companies such as Materialise NV, Protolabs, Sculpteo, 3D Hubs and more. Their use of PolyJet allows them to offer color 3D printing, as shown in the image below.

D Systems Market Cap $133b

The original 3D printing company 3D Systems was founded by Chuck Hull to commercialize stereolithography all the way back in 1986, two years after he invented the process. Since their first industrial 3D printer the SLA-1 3D Systems has grown exponentially to annual revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Whats more, the SLA-1 has since been declared an engineering landmark by the ASME, further displaying the influence 3D Systems have had on the industry.

Despite the multitude of new companies who have since entered the market, the American 3D printer manufacturer remain an effective competitor. A clever strategy mixing innovation with high-profile acquisitions has proven smart, and the company is now worth around $1.33bn. The most important acquisitions include DTM in 2001 , Z Corp in 2011, Phenix Systems in 2013, and Simbionix and LayerWise in 2014.

With SLA and SLS 3D printer options as well as metal 3D printers, 3D Systems have a strong hold on the industrial 3D printer market. 3D Systems also produce 3D scanners.

How Big Can 3d Printers Be

According to Ma Yi He, CEO of WinSun, it is the worlds first continuous printing 3D printer, and the largest 3D house printer in the world.

We will discuss the details of this machine and the objects it produces in the next section.

Aside from WinSun, BetAbram P1 is another giant 3D printer. It is built by a Slovenian company and measures 288 cubic meters. Just like WinSun, you can use BetAbram P1 to print habitable structures from CAD files. The most gigantic object it produced is a 16 x 9 x 2-meter object.

These enormous machines have a big volume and build size based on its cubic meters. A cubic meter is a unit of volume in the International System of Units. One cubic meter is a large volume for an ocean freight shipment. To give you a picture, it means that the item is 1 meter long by 1 meter wide by 1 meter high or approximately 35 cubic feet. Then multiply this by 2, 466 for WinSun and 288 for BetAbram.

Due to its large printing size, WinSun and BetAbram P1 are able to produce gigantic and usable objects like villas and apartments.

Bcn3d Sigma D25 Large Workhorse 3d Printer

Another very effective fused deposition modeling printer, Spanish industrial 3D printer manufacturer BCN3D have outdone themselves with their latest iteration of the Sigma range, the Sigma D25.

Featuring a dual extruder and immense print volume at 420 x 300 x 200 mm, the Sigma D25 stands out for reasons other than just being a large 3D printer. Its extraordinarily versatile, happily printing with 3D printer filaments ranging from ABS and PLA to HIPS, ASA, and more.

However, this is no standard dual extruder instead, BCN3Ds IDEX system allows each of the extruders to move independently, vastly speeding up part production for similar parts, as well as allowing for multi-material printing and soluble filament printing, such as PVA.

Perhaps most impressively, the Sigmas duplication and mirror modes capitalize on its dual extruder to enhance the scalability of part production. Duplication mode prints identical models simultaneously, while mirror mode prints mirror designs to speed up part production.

Moreover, Sigma D25 is a BCN3D printer that now has WiFi printing capabilities as well as USB and SD card printing, and even updates itself automatically with the latest firmware for the latest developments.

D Printed Boat: The Manufacturing Process

The UMaine teams worked with Ingersoll Machine Tools to develop their 3D printer, it presents a printing volume of 30 x 6.70 x 3 meters and a speed of 227 kilos per hour. The print head is fixed on a gantry mounted on rails, making it easier to move along the length. As of today, the manufacturer is not offering a wide-range of compatible materials, however the machine was designed to use raw materials of biological origin, in particular cellulose from wood. Apparently, the 3D printer was designed for rapid prototyping applications for civil, defence and infrastructure applications.

In order to demonstrate the capabilities of their large format 3D printer, the teams created the 3D printed boat 3Dirigo. It was manufactured in just 72 hours from a mixture of plastic and wood cellulose. The part is 7.62 meters long and weighs 2.2 tons, making it the largest solid structure ever 3D printed.

The boat has been tested by the Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory test site

Lcd Screen Resolution 2k 4k 6k

Much like computer monitors and TVs, LCD screen resolution determines the level of pixel and detail.

A higher resolution equates to a better XY resolution and slimmer layer height, both critical factors in the fine detail and precision we expect from resin printers.

Youll find 2K, 4K, and even 8K printers for those that want the highest level of detail and intricate features on their prints.

That said, a 2K LCDs print quality far outclasses that of FDM printers, so is more than suitable for most applications.
