Output Worth Waiting For
Canons TR series Pixmas are marketed as business-centric AIOs, as opposed to the TS series, the companys consumer-grade photo brand. The fifth ink gives the TR8620 a leg up on other business-centric models, such as Epsons WorkForce ST-4000 or Brothers MFC-J995DW , for printing photos. I printed our test suite of color photos and found that the five inks produced brighter, vibrant, and more accurate colorswith less graininess and greater detailthan I’ve seen on prints from most four-ink printers.
The Pigment Black ink enriches black areas, making them deeper and less susceptible to that faded, somewhat washed-out look you get from some competing four-ink business-oriented models. Increasing the number of colors widens the color gamut, which in turn increases the number of colors the printer can print in this case, that translates to more and richer shades of black and gray.
As many inkjet models do, however, the TR8620 struggled with an exceptionally challenging PowerPoint handout containing a gradient from dark green to black. Instead of flowing evenly from one color to the next, the gradient stepped significantly, with distinct bands of color. This ink dispersing flaw was garish and unattractive, unusable for most applications. Out of the many complex color pages I printed, though, it was the only one that misprinted. And Ive seen the same or worse results from several other printers, including some that cost two or three times more than this Pixma.

Choosing the right photo printer is largely a question of desired picture size and whether or not you want portability. Those offer photo printing alongside document printing, scanning and copying.
Snapshots or larger? Inkjet printers that offer photo printing will usually do so at sizes up to a full page, while dedicated photo printers may be limited to 4 x 6 prints or smaller. If larger prints are what you want, then no pocket printer will do you need a desktop inkjet printer.
Portability is the other big concern. Many people find that the best time to print off those vacation photos is during the vacation, getting hardcopies of that day at the beach or that memorable museum tour printed right in your hotel room, instead of letting all of your photos accumulate until you have several hundred to sift through after your return home. Additionally, many people value the spontaneity afforded by portable photo printers, and many of the best photo printers market themselves as modern equivalents to the instant cameras of decades past.
Price: Photo-capable all-in-one printers can be had for as little as $60 for inkjet models, but more-professional printing options can scale up to hundreds of dollars. Smaller portable photo printers feature battery power and smartphone connectivity and generally sell for around $100 .

Snapshot printers may vary a bit in quality, but any near-dedicated photo printer should offer output quality suitable for a professional photographer’s exhibition prints. Still, you should obviously check to make sure by reading reviews or looking at print samples at a retailer. Keep in mind, too, that different people have different tastes, so choosing between two or more printers with superb, but slightly different, output may depend entirely on which one you like better.
Note that the type of paper you use can make a difference in the overall effect for a given image, so ask what papers are available for the printer. Most manufacturers offer an assortment of fine-art papers for near-dedicated photo printers. In many cases, you can also get paper-specific color profiles for a given printer so you can use it with third-party fine-art papers, as well.
Finally, two other issues fall loosely under the heading of quality: ruggedness and lifetime. Don’t expect much in the way of ruggedness for fine-art papers for exhibition, but you do need it for stacks of 4-by-6-inch snaps that you might hand out for people to look through. Photos from most printers today are reasonably waterproof and scratch-resistant, but some fare better than others.
Claimed photo lifetimes also vary, with longer lifetimes obviously preferred. As a point of reference, traditional silver halide color prints last about 20 years when exposed to air.

All Of Your Printing Needs Will Be Met By This Canon Printer
The Achilles Heel of any inkjet printer is the ink cost. Not only do the ink cartridges run low quickly, but they cost a small fortune to replaceoften outstripping the cost of the original printer in just a few refills. Thats not the case with the Canon PIXMA MegaTank G7020, built around Canons MegaTank refillable ink tank standard. The ink is cheap enough that it drops the cost of prints to about a penny each. It has four easily serviceable tanks and you can clearly see the level from the front of the printer.
The printer also happens to be a multifunction device, so you can use it as your all-around office workhorse. Its serve as a photocopier, scanner, printer and even fax . The printer holds up to 350 sheets of paper with a dedicated feed for small-format photo paper for printing snapshots. It does a really great job printing photos, especially considering the budget-focused ink tank. And dont worry about running out of ink for normal document printing theres enough black ink in the box for 18,000 pages.
In 2022, many inkjet printers from Canon, Epson, and other manufacturers have switched to the ink tank system . This will ultimately save you a fortune in ink costs. A typical ink tank can hold the equivalent of 30 ink cartridges worth of ink, which is enough ink to last the average user about two years.
Do You Print In Black And White
When shopping in most categories of printer, you need to consider whether you really need color printing. Photo printers turn the question on its head, making you consider whether you need black-and-white printing of images, which many printers can’t handle particularly well.
The most common flaw in black-and-white image printing is a color tint, or multiple tints, that show up in different shades of gray. If you intend to print lots of black-and-white photos, you’ll need to check out black-and-white photo quality separately from the printer’s color photo quality. This is more often a problem for dedicated, rather than near-dedicated, photo printers, but you need to consider it in either case.

Connection Options: Wired Or Wireless
More broadly, what do you want to print from? Some dedicated snapshot printers can print from a computer over a USB connection, but most are really meant as standalone devices. Older models tend to come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and many can print directly from PictBridge-supporting cameras and memory cards, or from a USB flash drive. A few print from internal memory, but you need to transfer the files to the memory first, so find out what connection you need to use to transfer the photos. Most common, nowadays, in new models is Bluetooth connectivity for printing from a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth-enabled device.
The connectivity options for near-dedicated photo printers are much the same as for standard office printers. Some models offer just a single USB connector. Others add an Ethernet jack for easy sharing on a network. Most now offer Wi-Fi connectivity, as well, and a few offer all three options: USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. Few models at this level offer PictBridge connectors or similar direct-from-device printing choices, because the assumption is that serious photographers will want to print from photo-editing programs on their computers after they’ve tweaked their images.
How To Choose The Best Photo Printer For You
Cant I just buy any old inkjet printer?
Most inkjet printers are good all-rounders and capable of knocking out a decent photo print, but the printers were talking about here are designed specifically to do the job. Generally speaking, they have high-resolution print engines that use extra colours for a better print, have better colour accuracy than their non-specialist cousins and support a wider range of photo media.
What are the most important specifications to look at?
In terms of the basic technology, a photo printer doesnt work that differently to a standard inkjet. Where the two differ is that photo printers are usually able to produce much smaller drops of ink and, while most regular inkjets use just four coloured inks Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow a photo printer will work with five or six premium, photo-quality inks, adding a light cyan and/or light magenta on top.
These two factors are important because, in order to simulate roughly 16.7 million colours using four-to-six inks, inkjets have to layer the minuscule dots they print in proportionally tiny patterns. These, to the human eye, register as a particular colour or tone. The smaller the dots you can print and the more colours you have to work with, the easier this is and the light cyan and light magenta have been shown to dramatically increase the range.
