There was a time when photos were synonymous with prints, but since the decline of film cameras, its far more common to experience photos on a phone or PC screen and rarely, if ever, print them. Thats too bad, because photos need to live in the real world, on paper, to be fully appreciated. The best photo printers can transform your photos into high-quality prints suitable for use in the office or at home for framing or sharing with family.

Virtually any printer can generate decent photo prints, but dedicated photo printers can create prints with richer, more accurate colors and better dynamic range. They come in all shapes and sizes, from standard letter size to wide-format to, well, very wide format. Printers also go small; you can get photo printers that spit out small 2.4-inch-square prints, ideal for printing snapshots from your phone. No matter what youre looking for, theres something here for you. Weve rounded up 8 of the best photos printers available today.

Is Inkjet Or Laser Better

Inkjet printers are the top choice for photo printing due to the accurate nature of the printing process that involves shooting millions of small dots of ink onto the paper. The end result is a dynamic, high-contrast image that is much more natural and true to the source than the quicker, heat-based process of a laser printer can produce.

Best For Large Prints: Kodak Dock

Many portable photo printers only print out in the small 2×3 size, which isn’t ideal if you want to frame them to display. If you want larger prints, like the standard 4×6 size, then the Kodak Dock Instant Photo Printer is a good option.

While it is not as compact and even a bit bulky, it’s worth it for the 4×6 printing capability. The Dock connects directly to your iPhone via an adapter , or you can connect via USB cable or Wi-Fi. The Kodak Printer Dock app lets you put stickers, filters, card templates, and more on your photos for extra fun.

As far as prints go, the Kodak Dock uses thermal transfer technology, so there isn’t ink to deal with, but you need to get the photo cartridges. Prints will be vivid in color and high resolution, so fine details should appear. The thermal print won’t bleed or fade, so it’ll last quite a while.

Our Pick: Epson Surecolor P700

*At the time of publishing, the price was $922.

The Epson SureColor P700 consistently produces beautiful, high-quality color and black-and-white prints worthy of hanging in your home or any art gallery. Time after time, its output in our tests most closely matched our color-calibrated computer screen. Color prints displayed impressive detail and accurate skin tones, while black-and-white prints showed a full range of tone, without color cast, more consistently than those of the competition.

The 4.3-inch tilting color touchscreen is useful for performing maintenance and observing the printing process as it displays your image during printing. Using the touchscreen makes changing the paper type and sizing feel more seamless than on competing printers, which still offer only physical buttons for such tasks. Graphic instructions offer step-by-step assistance and explanations. A see-through panel and an interior light allow you to watch each print in process, a feature we found as entrancing as seeing an image emerge in a darkroom tray.

The P700 comes with Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity options. It was the fastest printer we tested, though printing over Wi-Fi was generally slower than doing so over a physical connection.

Canon Pixma Ip7250 Photo Printer

We often get inquiries for home users that are;but don’t want to spend hundreds on a full blown photo printer.;The iP7250 is a brilliant Canon machine that excels at that, and only that. It has dominated our best “just a printer” recommendation for years now, and no new printer in 2018 comes close yet.

It can handle any media up to 300gsm, more than heavy enough for all but the most niche requirements.;Read the full Canon Pixma iP7250 printer review. Sure, for the same price you can buy a budget Epson printer with a scanner and extra functionality, but if you’re not going to use them you can get this excellent printer instead.

What Is The Best Printer That Uses Less Ink

Inkjets stand out in the market for producing high-quality inks because of the number of colours and the chroma optimiser that they use for the finishing touch and for their wider colour gamut and tonal depth that they reproduce for both monochrome and colour printing. As much as these devices produce high-quality photos, much of the ink that the devices consume do not make it to the medium, which means a lot of the ink is used up while cleaning printheads and for other maintenance purposes. The amount of ink consumed varies with different models and the technology behind the printing process.

With advanced devices, the number of cartridges and printheads increases. So when it comes to saving ink, we focused on ones that used less number of cartridges but still produced good quality photos.

Taking into account quality, price and home use, the best device that uses acceptable ink is the Epson Expression Premium XP-640. It does 2 sided printing and has dedicated trays for photo papers. It is wireless and can do print, copy, and scan with Wi Fi connectivity and uses 5 Claria Premium cartridges. The maximum resolution for Epson Expression Premium XP-640 is 5760 x 1440 dpi and can do a maximum size of 8.5 x 11.

There is another small device from the Epson range, the Epson Expression Photo XP-970. It can print borderless photos up to 11 x 17, and the epson Expression Photo XP-970 gives your photos brilliant colours with its six ink color Claria Photo HD Inks.

Canon Selphy Wireless Photo Printer

âInkjet printer: Best Inkjet printers (Buying Guide)

Finally, lets take a look at a larger photo printer that isnt designed to be hand-held. The Canon Selphy;CP1200 Wireless Photo Printer;weighs 1.9 pounds and measures 7.1 x 5.4 inches.

For a desktop photo printer this is;considered to be fairly compact, so it wont take up too much room in your home. It needs to be powered by the mains adaptor, unless you purchase an optional battery pack.

The Canon Selphy;can print in a;variety of paper;sizes up to 4 x 6 inches. Due to its larger size, it also offers many more features including a host of control buttons, memory card slots, and even a flip-up screen for previewing your photo before printing.

The printer is AirPrint enabled, which means that you can print wirelessly and effortlessly from your iPhone or other iOS device. Print quality and color rendering seem to be strong points in reviews of this printer, and cost per print tends to be lower than the smaller hand-held printers.

The pack;is designed so that theres just enough ink;for the paper included, however, some users report that the ink sometimes runs out before all of the paper has been used.

Fine Family And Home Office Printing

The Best Cheap Printers Under $100

If you’re looking for a machine for printing family photos and churning out or copying the occasional document, five-ink Pixmas like the TS6320 are excellent values. Otherwise, their high running costs consign them to low-volume duty. If your home office requires a higher duty cycle, machines with lower-cost consumables such as the HP Envy Photo 7155 or the Epson ET-7700 are sensible alternatives. If a more robust feature set, including Ethernet connectivity and an ADF, is attractive to you, the Editors’ Choice-winning, wide-format Pixma TS9520 is another outstanding choice.

Reasons to avoid

The Canon Pixma TR8620 offers plenty of office features, from scanning and faxing to a 20-page automatic document feeder , a duplexer for two-sided printing, and two paper trays for keeping two types of paper at the ready. But this multifunction printer doesn’t just offer document printing for homes and small offices; it also delivers great photo printing. A big 4.3-inch color touchscreen makes it easy to control, and the printer supports smart home integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

It’s also a great printer, with faster-than-average print speeds and high print quality overall. Text and color graphics all look great, but we noted that glossy photos printed impressively fast, and the use of a 5-ink cartridge system with two types of black ink resulted in photos with high-quality accuracy: Natural-looking colors, sharp details and smooth transitions. Really, our only big complaint with the Pixma TR8620 is the above average cost of ink, due partially to the expense of the extra ink cartridge.

Reasons to avoid

The Canon Pixma TR150 is a portable inkjet printer that’s small enough to carry in a backpack, but big enough to print everything from 4×6 photos to 8.5 x 11 documents, all with decent speed and quality. With a two-cartridge ink system, it’s also got affordable ink that lends itself well to a variety of printing uses. But where the Canon really stands out is photo printing.;

The replacement for the Editors’ Choicewinning SureColor P800 we reviewed here back in October 2016, the SureColor P900 17-Inch Photo Printer continues Epson’s tradition of impeccable pro-grade wide-format photograph and graphics art printers. A step up from the 13-inch SureColor P700 , the P900 churns out exceptional images and artwork up to 17 by 22 inches, as well as breathtaking banners up to 17 inches wide by 129 inches long. Like the P800 before it, the P900 is superb, with terrific output, highly productive software, and competitively low running costs. During our tests, the P900 efficiently handled everything thrown at it, producing impressive oversize photos, artwork, and banners. It effortlessly takes the P800’s place as our Editors’ Choice for professional-grade photography and graphic art inkjet printers.;

Typical Pixma Print Speeds

Canon rates the TS6320 at 15 monochrome and 10 color pages per minute , which is about standard for most TS-series Pixmas. I tested the printer over a USB connection from our standard Intel Core i5 testbed running Windows 10 Pro. Like its TS6220 predecessor, the TS6320 printed our 12-page Microsoft Word test document at just under 13ppmâactually, 12.7ppm, which is 0.2ppm slower than the older model and 2.3ppm slower than the Epson XP-7100.

Next, I printed our collection of full-color Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint business documents containing charts, other business graphics, and embedded photos, then combined those results with the Word scores to come up with a comprehensive speed rating. The Pixma TS6320 managed only 4.7ppm, which tied its predecessor and came in 2.2ppm behind the XP-7100.

As for our 4-by-6-inch borderless snapshots, the TS6320 printed them in about 20 seconds each, two seconds quicker than the TS6220 and five seconds ahead of the Epson. As we said about last year’s model, for home offices that churn out 100 to 200 pages each month, this Pixma should be plenty fast enough.
