Review
This is one trick printer that requires proper maintenance and careful handling. This printer is not really easy to install. You may have to download certain drivers from the Ricohs website prior to the installation.
Once the printer is successfully installed you may have to test the print for at least 5 times to ensure that you get the perfect print. In the test printing, you may experience dark prints with the black cartridge. If the problem persists even after a few tests you may be required to call in technicians for help. In short Ricoh SP 111SU is one of the tough to handle laser printer.
Best For Fast Printing: Brother Mfc
Brothers MFC-L5900DW black-and-white multifunction printer is made to handle a large volume of print jobs. Printing up to 42 pages per minute, with a toner capacity of up to 8,000 pages per high-yield cartridge, this model is great for going through stacks of text documents day in and day out. It also handles other office tasks such as printing, scanning and faxing very well, if somewhat slower than its printing.
The MFC-L5900DW is a full-featured office printer, with all the standard security features expected of these models. It includes a USB port for out-of-network printing and can upload any scans directly to cloud storage services such as Dropbox, iCloud and more. Despite its many features, it lacks double-sided scanning, which can be inconvenient for certain print jobs.
Toner cartridges are reasonably priced, with standard yield cartridges costing around $70 and the high-yield versions costing up to $130, depending on the deals available when you purchase.
The Best Laser Printers Available Now
It’s not unreasonable to declare that Brother is a solid and dependable name if you’re looking for the best laser printer. If scan its product range and pick something close to your preferred price point, you’re likely to be perfectly happy with it. All in all though, the Brother MFC-L2750DW comes out on top as the best laser printer.
There’s plenty to like about it it’s a multifunction laser printer that’ll scan, copy and even fax as well as printing, and it’ll pump out mono A4 prints at an impressive 34 pages per minute, at up to 2400 x 600 dpi. And it has all the connectivity you need either plug it in via USB or LAN, or print wirelessly, from your computer or from other devices via AirPrint or Google Cloud Print.
Running a close second to the Brother comes another venerable name in printing technology, Xerox. Functionally the Xerox B215 comes pretty close to the laser printer above, with a decent print speed plus multifunction capabilities giving you scanning, copying and faxing, and its built-in touchscreen makes things just that little bit easier.
You can print via USB, LAN or a wireless connection, and it also supports mobile printing via the likes of AirPrint and Mopria. One useful extra should prove helpful when you run low on toner: it also support Amazon Dash replenishment, so getting replacement toner can be done at the touch of a button.

Our Pick: Hp Color Laserjet Pro M255dw
May be out of stock
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw is fast, powerful, flexible, and refreshingly easy to use. We love this printers responsive control panel, the modern design of HPs PC and mobile software, and how easy the machine is to set up and get on Wi-Fi. Toner is affordable at just 3¢ per black-and-white page and 15¢ for each color page, and it comes in extra-large cartridges that should last most people a very long time before they need to be replaced. Print quality is excellent across the board, and all of the features you might expect from a high-end printer are here, including auto-duplexing, plenty of networking options, support for common mobile printing standards, and a bypass slot for odd-size media.
Setting up the M255dw is painless, despite a fairly cryptic installation guide that relies primarily on pictures instead of words. Even though HP includes a USB cable , we think most people will use Wi-Fi, so thats the way we chose to set up our machine. With the touchscreen display, connecting the M255dw to our Wi-Fi network was as easy as picking our routers SSID out of a list and typing in the password. Unlike most other printers we tested, the M255dw also provides a full QWERTY keyboard, which made entering a complex Wi-Fi passphrase a lot less frustrating. Like the HP Color LaserJet Pro M254dw we used to recommend, the M255dw works with both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networksalso rare among printers.
Why You Should Trust Us
Wirecutter has covered printers for seven years, and Ive written about them since 2016. My editors and I have kept an eye on feedback from comment threads, email, and Twitter to better understand our readers real-world needs. Weve considered reviews from other editorial sources, including CNET, Computer Shopper, and PCMag. Weve scanned thousands of customer reviews to pick out recurring issues with specific models. And weve lived with many printers as long-term test units, learning how they can fail and disappoint in the long run.
For this guide to laser printers, weve considered 157 different printers and tested 19 of them since 2011. And for this particular update, we put in about 25 hours of research and testing, looking at 15 models and ultimately testing three.

Hp M31w All In One Compact Laser Printer Monochrome
This is not just one of the cheapest laser printers out there, it is also THE SMALLEST AIO model currently in the market.
It measures at only about 14.2 x 10.4 x 7.8 inches which is truly an accomplishment by HP.
This is a monochrome laser printer with a flatbed scanner on top. As such, it can scan and copy your documents.
Unfortunately, while being the smallest AIO laser printer is quiet a feat, this printer falls short in other aspects.
With a speed of 21 ppm, this printer is neither the fastest nor the one with the cheapest operating costs.
Furthermore, while it does offer WiFi and WiFi Direct, the lack of Ethernet port hinders its network capability.
All in all, if you want the cheapest AIO option, then this is best budget laser printers as far as monochrome goes.
This is one of the most budget friendly color laser printers out there.
It costs almost as much as any inkjet printer for photos and offers highly competitive running costs.
The printer prints a monochrome page at 2.6 cents per sheet and a color page at 15.5 cents. For those of you who are not aware of the norm, these figures are lower than the average for most color laser printers.
Unfortunately though, while this printer has a low upfront cost and also reasonably low operating costs, it suffers from a few issues.
Firstly, the graphics printing quality of this printer is sub par, which is something that you would expect at this price range.

Xerox Versalink B600dn: Best For Heavy Print Loads
By Xeroxs standards, this compact four-in-one laser printer is a modest affair, offering print, scan, copy and fax functions in a small and relatively affordable package. Despite the low price, however, the Xerox B215 still comes with a large tilting touchscreen for easy operation and a none-too-shabby print speed of 30ppm. You can fit 250 sheets of paper in the main paper tray and it comes with enough toner for 1,500 monochrome pages and has a fairly low per page print cost of around 2.2 pence per page
What You Should Look For In An All
If youre looking at all-in-one printers, this means youre seeking a single device that is capable of serving as a printer, copier, scanner and potentially a fax machine. Youve probably noticed, however, there are a lot of options, and each offers a slightly different assortment of features, functions and specifications.
The first decision to make is whether you want an inkjet printer or laser printer. Each uses a different printing technology, with laser printers typically generating higher-quality and crisper printed documents. Inkjet printers, however, are much better at generating photo lab-quality prints from your digital images.
Laser printers are a good choice if you print a lot from a home office or have a large family with a lot of diverse printing needs. Monochrome laser printers are fast, reliable and inexpensive. They dont do photos, however. You can invest in a color laser printer, but they’re a lot pricier than their monochrome counterparts. If your printing needs sometimes include color, an inkjet printer with ink tanks is your least expensive option.
The print quality of a laser printer tends to be superior, so for a home office from which youll be generating printed business correspondence or reports to be shared with others, a laser printer is likely more suitable. To meet the average needs of a family, however, a full-color, all-in-one inkjet printer will be more economical and versatile.

The Brother HL-L2390DW and HL-L2395DW are essentially the same machine as our budget pick, the Brother HL-L2350DW, but with a flatbed scanner bolted to the top, plus or minus some extra software features. We like these models, but over time reader feedback has led us to favor multifunction printers with automatic document feeders. If you dont need to scan multi-page documents very often, theyre still worth a look.
HPs LaserJet MFP M234dw and LaserJet MFP M234dwe are the same model with the same specs. The e version sells for $50 less because its part of HP+, which requires you to create an account, keep your printer connected to the internet, and use only first-party toner cartridges, while offering an extended warranty and a six-month trial of HPs printing subscription program. We didnt test either because they have flatbed scanners rather than automatic document feeders.
The Canon imageCLASS MF113w is limited by its flatbed scanner we prefer models with automatic document feeders.
The Brother DCP-L2550DW is a good bargain option if you dont need some of the features that our monochrome multifunction pick offers. Specifically, this model lacks duplex copy and scan, fax capability, and a touchscreen interface.
Although the Brother MFC-L2710DW is similar to the MFC-L2750DW model we like, it lacks that machines touchscreen interface and auto-duplex scanning and copying. It also has just 25 percent as much onboard memory and runs a little slower.
Best For Security: Hp Color Laserjet Pro M479fdw
Smaller and medium-sized businesses primarily concerned with security should look into the HP Color Laserjet Pro M479fdw. With several safeguards, this wireless four-in-one printer ensures data is protected from hackers who may try to use printers as an entry point into your network. It even stops attacks before they happen by sending notifications when someone attempts to intercept data or if a vulnerability is detected in the firmware. This model also has an optional PIN/Pull printing.
Additionally, this printer has several features that are helpful for large projects including automatic two-sided scanning and a 50-sheet feeder tray. It can also simplify multiple-step processes through task automation and the capability to save settings on the LCD control panel. Even more, this HP laser printer is eco-friendly, using up to 18 percent less energy compared to older devices.

Color Laser Printers Versus Inkjet Printers
Laser printers are better for text documents, as they produce crisp lines even at very small font sizes. Over time, they are also cheaper to run, as you can get more prints per dollar spent on toner than you can with inkjet ink. Laser printers also offer faster printing speeds and can save some serious time on large print jobs.
However, laser printers and the toner they use carry higher upfront costs. If you dont print very often, you can buy a cheap inkjet printer some are as low as $30 or so and it may take a long time before its higher operational costs catch up to the higher initial cost of a laser printer. For smaller print jobs, the faster pages-per-minute rate of a laser printer also wont be much of an advantage. If youre looking to save money in the long term and need a compelling alternative to laser printers, consider inkjet solutions that rely on tanks for ink rather than cartridges, like Epsons EcoTank series. Not only will tanks be better for the environment through less waste, but they will save you money for larger print jobs.
Color laser printers may also be a little slower compared to comparable monochrome versions because of how the colored toner process works. To create color, most color laser printers use a combination of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. They make one pass for each toner color , which naturally takes longer.
Choosing The Right Laser Printer
With so many similar-looking options, shopping for the right printer can be confusing. Here are the factors we looked at when deciding which laser printers to include on our list:
Black & White vs. Color: For many years, the conventional wisdom was that laser printers were only for monochrome printing. However, more low-cost laser printers like the Canon Color Image CLASS LBP622Cdw have become available in recent years.
Performance: In this section of each review, well discuss the specifications and performance of each of the printers on its list. This includes print quality, print speed, and any additional capabilities such as scanning and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Convenience: When picking between printers with similar performance, many users make their choice based on the additional features offered by a printer that makes life easier. Some helpful laser printer convenience features include the ability to use different sized paper and the ability to connect via mobile apps in order to set up and configure your printer.

Understanding Laser Printer Connectivity
While the vast majority of new inkjets are AIOs, with lasers you’ll find an abundance of both single-function printers and AIOs as you shop. AIOs provide copying and scanning in addition to printing, and in some cases, fax capabilities, too. Models with fax functionality will have a phone-line interface.
Most laser printers or AIOs include an Ethernet jack, and some integrate Wi-Fi. Ethernet connections are essential for plugging into the office router or other wired network infrastructure. For a small or home office, this is often sufficient, too, but also look at the other connectivity options if you just need to connect the printer to a single PC.
Also, when checking out the wireless aspects, be sure to check whether the Wi-Fi interface comes standard or is an option that you add via a module or card. Wi-Fi add-ons for laser AIOs tend to be extravagantly priced.
Control panels vary widely from one printer to the next. Make sure you get one with the walk-up features you need.
You might also see support for Wi-Fi Direct, or its equivalent, for establishing a direct peer-to-peer connection between computer and printer so you don’t need to connect to a network. Another more frequent option is support for Near-Field Communications touch-to-print, which lets you print from a mobile device by simply tapping it on a specific spot on the printer.
Best Inkjet: Hp Officejet Pro 9015
While laser printers are the gold standard, inkjet printers also prove to be just as good. The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 has many of the features of laser multifunction models without the higher cost or expensive toner. Like many of the brands printers, this device can scan, print, and copy documents wirelessly. With security options including password printing and encryption, even sensitive documents remain safe. The HP app also lets users monitor ink levels and order refills through HP Instant Ink, which can save up to 50 percent on the cost of new cartridges.
One unique feature of this all-in-one printer is the self-healing Wi-Fi, which detects potential problems, making sure the connection remains stable. This can be incredibly helpful in locations where Wi-Fi tends to be weak or lose its signal.
