Hp Deskjet 3: Best Budget Compact Printer
Technically were pushing our definition of a compact printer with this one, but while it doesnt call itself one, the HP DeskJet 3755s diminutive size speaks for itself as does its ridiculously low price. This is hands down the best budget compact printer weve seen, costing just $89.99.
Its not portable, theres no built-in battery and at 5.5 lbs, you wouldnt want to be lugging it around with you anyway, but if youre looking for a small, cheap printer to fit into your apartment or office set-up without taking up too much space, this is the one.
It even comes with a built-in scanner and copier which operates by feeding documents through it . The print quality is just OK, if were honest and you may get a few print errors but when you consider how affordable the HP DeskJet 3755 is, we think its still a great device.

Upgrade Pick: Hp Color Laserjet Pro Mfp M479fdw
*At the time of publishing, the price was $450.
If you need a more serious printer than our other picks, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw is expensive, but its one of the most affordable color laser printers that offer all the same productivity features as our favorite inkjet model. Its fast and reliable, and whether youre printing in color or black and white, the M479fdw produces beautiful documents. In our testing, it cranked out a single-sided Word document at around 24.1 pages per minute, slowing only to 21.8 ppm with duplex documents. Single-sided scan jobs flew by at 19.5 ppm, more than 6 ppm faster than on any other printer we tested, while duplex jobs emerged at a rate of 16.7 ppm per sheet .
The M479fdw also produced sharp text at small font sizes, better than any inkjet we tried. If youre printing a lot of legal documents, this is important. Graphics were crisperif a touch less saturatedthan what we got out of a printer like the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015. The M479fdw spools up faster than most inkjets, too, and its recommended duty cycle of 4,000 pages per monthnearly triple the OfficeJet Pro 9015s 1,500 pagesshould be plenty for even the busiest home office and could satisfy many small businesses with multiple employees.
Like our top pick, the M479fdw requires official HP toner cartridges.
What Will Be A Printer’s Running Costs
Be sure to check out the total cost of ownership. Most manufacturers will tell you the cost per page, and many give a cost per photo. To get the total cost of ownership, calculate the cost per year for each kind of output by multiplying the cost per page for that kind of output by the number of those pages you print per year. Add the three amounts together to get the total cost per year. Then multiply that by the number of years you expect to own the printer, and add the initial cost of the printer. Compare the total cost of ownership figures between printers to find out which model will be cheapest in the long run.;
The high cost of printer ink has traditionally been a sore spot among both home and business customers, but the major manufacturers have introduced ways that users can lower their per-page ink costs while preserving their own revenues. HP does this through its Instant Ink subscription program, in which owners of select DeskJet, OfficeJet, Envy, and Tango printers can choose among three levels, paying a monthly fee for printing up to a certain number of pages. The same fee applies for either black or color printing. HP automatically sends you more ink when you run low. These programs can save you a considerable amount of money, particularly if you print mostly in color.
Should You Buy A Refurbished Printer
Printing technology doesnt update often, so buying a printer thats a few years old isnt going to mean sacrificing any groundbreaking technology. If you do buy a refurbished or used printer, get it from a trustworthy source, make sure it has been recertified by the manufacturer, and look for a reasonable warranty and return period. Here’s what to know before buying refurbished electronics.
What’s The Difference Between Inkjet And Laser Printers
Inkjet printers work using ink to transfer images from your PC to paper. Laser printers use a laser to create an electrostatic charge on the paper which attracts toner and creates images on the page. Generally speaking, inkjet printers are better all-rounders, because they can be used to print both text and images. Laser printers are more suited to printing black ink on documents, which they’ll manage faster than your average inkjet printer. Inkjet printers can be very cheap upfront, but the need to replace their ink cartridges means the costs rack up quickly if you use them regularly Laser printers tend to be more expensive than inkjet printers upfront, but you get more bang for your buck when replacing toner when compared to ink cartridges.

Key Features To Look For When Buying A Compact Printer
Printer designGenerally, the lighter a mobile printer is the better. However, we looked for models that balance features and quality with their compact size. As you look at a mobile printer, check its dimensions to see if itll fit inside of the carrier you typically use, like a laptop bag or backpack.
Another important consideration is the battery life. Check to see how many documents you can print or days you can go before you need to recharge the battery. If you have to plug the battery in regularly, it impacts the printers overall portability.
OutputPrint quality is one of the most important considerations when buying any kind of printer, so we looked at documents printed by each machine under high magnification. Since you likely wont compare sample documents side by side in person as you choose a printer, we suggest comparing their print resolutions, which is a good indicator of how much detail a printer can recreate in images. The higher the numbers, the better the resolution. Smaller, high-resolution printers usually cost more, so you may have to compromise on resolution and portability to find something in your price range.
We looked for printers that can standard-size, 8.5 x 11 documents, but the more flexibility you have in your paper choice the better. While all the printers we considered handle standard-size paper, watch for special paper requirements. For example, the Brother PocketJet PJ763MFI uses thermal paper.
Key Features Of A Cheap Printer Thatll Last
One of the best ways to save money when you buy electronics is to choose a quality model that will last will be cost-efficient to operate over time. Unfortunately, not every printer is of the same quality, especially when youre working at a lower price point. Look for these key features when you shop for a low-cost printer to make sure that youre getting a quality model.;

The Brother J995DW has every connectivity option that you would expect from a home printer. It has Ethernet, USB to computer as well as USB Host, Wi-Fi with support for Wi-Fi Direct, and all other popular cloud services. To enjoy the mobile control access, one needs to install the Brother iPrint & Scan application which is available for both Android and iOS.
The printing speeds on this device turned out to be good with both the color and black and white documents at 10 PPM while the photo printer took about 50 seconds.

The scanner quality on this printer is pretty good with its maximum resolution being 1200 DPI. There is a provision for automatic document feeders on this device. However, the printer lacks the ability for duplex printing. The flatbed scan size on this printer is 8.5 x 11.

Who Should Get This
We think laser printers are best for people who need to print a lot, such as small-business owners. Theyre also great for people who dont print often but want a machine that will work without complaint on the rare occasions when they do need to print.
To help you decide if a laser printer is right for you, take a look at this brief list of things laser printers tend to do better than inkjets:
But laser printers arent for everyone because theyre not great at everything. Here are a few reasons why you might want to stick to an inkjet:
- Inkjets cost less to start with. A basic inkjet can cost as little as $40, but youd be hard-pressed to find a laser at that price.
- Their ink tanks are cheaper to replace. Toner cartridges may last longer, but replacing an entire set of them costs you several hundred dollars. Replacing smaller, less expensive ink tanks more often can be easier on your budget, even if it doesnt really save you money in the long run.
- They can print glossy photos. Laser printers can print a passable photo on plain papergood enough for a business presentation or book reportbut they cant print on glossy or matte photo paper. If you want frame-worthy photos, an inkjet is your only choice.
- They can print on other stuff besides paper. CDs, metal, and other unusual media are fair game, which makes inkjets much more versatile for crafty types.

HP ENVY 7155 : A GOOD OPTION FOR MOST MATERIALS
Even though it isnt featured in the video review, we wanted to include a non-Canon printer as an option. While this printer does not have a rear tray, it is able to handle many specialty materials like photo matte paper, sticker paper, printable vinyl, printable fabric. This printer was NOT able to print on the heavy Red River Polar Matte 88lb cardstock or the printable glitter cardstock. That said, you may be a crafter who is mostly interested in printing out stickersin which case this printer could be a great fit!
One of the biggest benefits of this printer is the HP Instant Ink program. With this program, you pay one low monthly fee to print as much as you want. Its a great way to save on ink costs but still enjoy as much crafting as you want!
Tip : Research Which Ink Subscriptions Are The Cheapest
While its useful to weigh up cartridge prices and yields, consider that a lot of printers these days are covered by subscription plans, which can save you money, not to mention the hassle of having to order fresh cartridges yourself.
These are typically only offered if youre buying a printer that can be connected to the Internet, because services like HPs Instant Ink and Epsons ReadyPrint work by the printer monitoring ink levels and alerting the manufacturer when ink levels are getting low, which sees fresh cartridges popped into the post and sent out to you in advance of you running out of ink.
HP Instant Ink and Epson ReadyPrint subscription prices are therefore based on how many pages of paper you print in a month:
