How Many Drums Does My Printer Need

As mentioned before, in the case of smaller, more economical printers, the drum is included directly with the toner cartridge and needs no further attention. For larger or more professional devices, depending on the type, either one drum or one drum per colour is required.

In individual cases, this should be checked in the users manual of the device . On our website you can see an overview of the articles available for your device which already provides insight for most cases.

    What Is A Printer Drum

What is a drum, and why does Todd Rundgren want to bang on it all day? What does a printer drum do?

The drum unit on high volume printers looks like a big green cylinder. On other machines the drum is deep maroon in color and about the same size and width as a paper towel roll. Smaller laser printers can have a drum no wider than a pencil.

Regardless of size and color, the primary function of the drum unit is to attract the toner powder particles via electrostatic polarities and transfer the toner to the paper.

While the drum receives the electric charge and the image is drawn, the rest of the drum unit stays neutral.

A drum uses an electrostatic charge to attract the toner powder particles which are put on a photosensitive roller inside the drum unit. The electrostatic charge is then used to draw the image on the drum that is transferred onto the paper and printed on the page later in the process.

This is why drum units are commonly referred to as image drums or imaging units.

The Toner Cartridge Holds The Powder Creating The Image While The Drum Unit Transfers The Toner Powder To The Paper

There is also a difference between ink cartridges and toner cartridges, luckily, we explain these differences in a previous article through a comparative table. Inkjet printers use ink cartridges with actual liquid ink, while laser printers use a fine powder held in the toner cartridges. Ink cartridges are better for printing high-quality images while toner cartridges are better for printing high-quality text and graphics.

Toner cartridges need the photosensitive drum and there is a critical distinction between the drum & the toner cartridge: the toner cartridge houses the powder while the drum picks up the toner and smacks it on the paper like a marching band drummer performing a drum roll, the printer drum repeatedly deposits the toner from the cartridge onto the paper to create the desired print.

Ink cartridges hold liquid ink while toner cartridges hold powder.

Some printers include the drum and toner cartridge in separate units, needing separate replacement however, some printers have the drum and toner in the same unit, needing the replacement of only one container. If you are unsure, try searching your model on 123Inks Ink & Toner finder and see if the distinction is there, or try the support chat.

The cost per page is lower with drum cartridges despite the larger up-front cost of laser printers. Nonetheless, it is important to know if your printer uses a drum, and what a drum is.

How Long Do Printer Drums Last

Whats the difference between toner cartridge and drum unit?

Much like with inkjet printers, your laser printer should inform you when it is time to change the drum. The amount of pages that can be created from a single drum can be as many as 50,000, but this all depends upon the specific printer. By researching the type of printer and drum you have, you should be able to find out the estimated time your printer drum will last for.

How Is An Imaging Drum Replaced

Removing & Replacing the Drum and Toner on a Brother Printer

First you should make sure that the drum really is defective or worn and not just that the toner cartridge is empty.

Provided that it is ensured that the drum is defective or worn-out, you can simply open the flap of the printer, since the toners can be found behind it. Depending on the device type or set-up, the drum can be found either behind the toner or like in the case of the Konica Minolta often also under the toners.

In this case, you must take special care of the particularities indicated by the device manufacturer when replacing the drum. In general it can be said though, that a lot of heat arises while printing and that after the last printing, time must elapse before the drum can be replaced.

When installing the new drum, even before unpacking it, you should make sure that the new drum can be put into the device as soon as possible, so that it is not unnecessarily exposed to any direct sunlight. Therefore you should check how to remove the old drum and whether the device has to be switched off to do so.
