Installing A Shared Printer
The simplest way to share a printer on a network is to share a printer alreadyattached to one of the computers on the network. Even if you are starting fromscratch, meaning you have a printer but have not installed it on any computer, the process is pretty straightforward to install it and share it on a network. Youmay have already completed some of these steps.
These steps are divided into two sections: attaching the printer to a computerin your homegroup, and then installing the printer on other homegroup computers.
Connect Your Printer Directly To The Network
Most printers these days have networking built in. Some come equipped with Wi-Fi, some with Ethernet, and many have both options available. Unfortunately, we cant give you precise instructions for getting this done, since how you do it depends on the type of printer you have. If your printer has an LCD display, chances are you can find the network settings somewhere in the Settings or Tools portion of the menus. If your printer has no display, youll probably have to rely on some series of physical button presses to tell it whether it should use its Wi-Fi or Ethernet network adapter. Some printers even have a dedicated easy connect button that can set up the Wi-Fi for you.
If youre having trouble setting up a printer that connects directly to the network, the manufacturer should have instructions for making it happen. Check the manual that came with your printer or the manufacturers web site for information on hooking it up.

Troubleshooting A Shared Windows 7 Printer
Not all printers will work using the LPD protocol, usually because the printer driver on the Mac or Windows 7 computer doesn’t support this sharing method. If your printer isn’t working, try the following:
- Update the printer drivers on both your Mac and Windows 7 computers.
- Try a different printer driver. The specific driver for your printer may not work, but a generic version may, either from the same printer manufacturer or from a different vendor, such as CUPS or Gutenprint drivers.
Configure The Workgroup Name
The Mac and PC need to be in the same workgroup for file sharing to work. Windows 7 uses a default workgroup name of WORKGROUP. If you haven’t made any changes to the workgroup name on the Windows computer connected to your network, then you’re ready to go. The Mac also creates a default workgroup name of WORKGROUP for connecting to Windows machines.
