Print From Your Iphone Without An Airprint Printer
Heres how to print from your phone or iPad without upgrading your non-AirPrint printer.
Once in a blue moon, I have to print a coupon or a letter or something. And when I do that, I use the same printer Ive been using since 2009: the HP Photosmart C4780 that came for free with a MacBook purchase. Unfortunately, despite getting this printer from the Apple Store, it does not support AirPrintHP didnt start supporting AirPrint until the HP PhotoSmart 5000 series . However, Ill continue to pay astronomical sums for ink cartridges; for some reason, I refuse to buy a new printer since this one works perfectly fine. But being unable to print from my iPhone or iPadsomething everyone else has been able to do since iOS 4.2.1 was released in 2010makes me feel like Im stuck in the stone ages.
So, I did some research. And it turns out that there a few ways to get my non-AirPrint printer to print from iOS. Check it out.

Set Up The Printer Network Connection
Make sure the printer and your Apple device are connected to the same wireless network.
On your Apple device, make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and there is a check mark next to the name of your local Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to a different network, tap the name of your network to join it.
Check the printer network connection status.
Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Touch the Wireless icon or open the Network Settings or Setup menu to view the network connection status.
Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press the Wireless and Information buttons at the same time, or press the Wireless and Start Copy Black buttons at the same time. A Wireless Test Report prints with the network connection status.
The printer connection status should be Connected or Ready. If it is not, continue with these steps to connect your printer to the network.
Place the printer within range of the Wi-Fi router signal, and then connect it to the network.
Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the instructions to select the network name and enter the password.
Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to blink. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on the router until the connection process begins. The printer wireless light stops blinking when the connection completes.

Method 1: Connecting Epson Printer to the Network

Airprint Using A Mac Or Windows Pc
If you have a non-AirPrint printer connected to a Mac or Windows PC, you can use that computer as an intermediary for processing AirPrint jobs from your iPhone or iPad. The catch: youll need some third-party software. Some of these apps are free-ish, and others are paid. They work pretty much like CUPS, and in fact, some of the Mac variants use CUPS.

Print From Your Apple Device
Print documents, photos, and web pages from iPhone and iPad apps with a print feature.
Make sure the printer is turned on, cartridges are installed, and the paper you want to print on is loaded in the correct paper tray.
Open the item you want to print, and then tap the Share icon ( or
Tap Print or the Print icon .

Printing With An Airprint Printer
Whether you want to print from your iPhone or iPad, the process is almost identical. The only difference is really where you might find the share button . This button may also move around depending on if youre using portrait or landscape mode.
If you have an AirPrint compatible printer, youll see it automatically show up across iOS. Heres how the process looks in the Files app on iPhone :
As long as you see the share button on the content or file youre looking at you should be able to print directly from your device.

Setting Up Airprint On Your Raspberry Pi
Before you can set up AirPrint on your Raspberry Pi, make sure you have followed our print server tutorial.
That tutorial will walk you through all of the steps you need to get the CUPS software up and running on your device.
Cups is a powerful software that allows communication between your Raspberry Pi and a printer.
The AirPrint software will work on top of the Cups software, allowing communication between your Apple device and your Raspberry Pi.
1. Before you can complete this tutorial, you must have completed our Raspberry Pi print server tutorial.
Without completing these steps, you will be unable to connect to a printer using AirPrint.
2. Before we install the AirPrint software, we need to ensure everything is up to date
Updating packages on your device is a straightforward process and can be done with the following two commands.
sudo apt updatesudo apt full-upgrade
3. To be able to get AirPrint on your device, you will need to install the Avahi daemon
You can install this package to your Raspberry Pi by running the following command.
sudo apt install avahi-daemon
This package is an implementation of Apples Zeroconf architecture. This architecture typically goes by the name Bonjour.
Bonjour is what AirPrint uses to connect two separate devices such as an iPhone and your Raspberry Pi.
The files you want to print will be sent through the Bonjour daemon and then sent to the connected printer.
To restart the Raspberry Pi, run the following command on your device.
Connecting Your Chip To The Wifi
I dont have any USB keyboard, so to configure CHIP, I had to connect it to my Mac and use the USB port as a serial port.
Step 1: Connect to CHIP using the USB Serial
From your terminal, list all the serial devices:
$ ls /dev/tty*
Now connect your CHIP to the USB port, wait 30 seconds or so that the boot procedure complete and repeat the command, the list should include a new device. That one is your CHIP! .
Now use screen to connect:
$ screen /dev/tty.usbserial 115200
Youll then be prompted for login. Defaults are username root and password chip. More details are available here.
At this point in time you are ready to connect your CHIP to the WIFI.

Airprint Using An Ios App
If you dont want to have a computer or a NAS turned on all the time, you can use an iOS app to print directly to a non-AirPrint printer.
I got ePrint Free working with my phone and my HP PhotoSmart printer. The free version is fairly limited in what you can print. But, I successfully printed a photo from my camera roll. So, you could work around the limitations by screenshotting or saving images to your camera roll then printing them from the app.
Other iOS printing apps include HP Smart, Lexmark Mobile Print, and Samsung Mobile Print.
Installing Cups And Airprint On Your Chip
Now you can disconnect CHIP from your PC, connect it to the power adapter and to the printer!
Great! As first step I recommend to upgrade your CHIP OS.
$ apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
Before doing the all work, it is also good that you check if your printer is recognized:

How To Print From An Iphone Or Ipad With A Usb Cable
To print from an iPhone or iPad with a printer that can’t connect wirelessly, you’ll have to use a piece of hardware as the go-between. You’ll need a USB cable and a USB OTG adapter that connects your iPhone to the USB cable.
To print from an iPhone or iPad with a USB cable:;
1. Turn on your printer and connect one end of the USB cord to your printer and the other end to the USB OTG cord. Plug the other end of the USB OTG cord into your iPhone or iPad.
2. A pop-up should appear on your iPhone or iPad tap “OK.”
3. Then, on your iPhone or iPad, go to the document you wish to print and tap the Share button.;
4. In the Share menu, select the “Print” option.
