How To Scan Your Old Photos
We show you how to digitize your photos so that you can more easily find them, share them, and prevent them from being lost in the event of a disaster. Follow our tips to get the best results with your home scanner.
Shoeboxes of old photos may hold your family’s history and memories, but they’re difficult to preserve, share, organize, and back up. The best way to solve this problem is to digitize your old photos. It’s easy to do at home using a really good scanner, which can cost as little as about $65, or the scanner bed on an all-in-one printer, if you already have one. You can also mail your photos to a company that digitizes them for you and then sends them back when they’re done.
When you turn print photos into digital files, you have them right at hand when you need them. That way, you’ll be able to find, share, and print any picture in minutes.
Let’s look at these two options: hiring a company to digitize your photos and doing it at home. Both options have pros and cons. If you decide to do it yourself, keep reading for a few tips from pros on how to get the best results.
Keep in mind that you can use both options in tandem. For example, if you have some photos that you want scanned right away, you can do it at home while sending the rest of your collection out to a professional scanning service.

An External Hard Drive
We have an entire guide dedicated to the best external hard drives, but the one Im going to recommend for this project is Western Digitals 2TB Passport Ultra. It has more than enough storage to back up your entire computer, not just your photos, so youll be able to restore all of your files in case of a crash. Its BUS-powered, which means it draws power from your computer instead of having to be plugged into an outlet, and physically small enough to fit safely in a drawer between backups.
Both Windows and MacOS have built-in backup tools, so its easy to make a full, restorable backup of your computer in case something bad happens. If you only want to back up a select number of your files, you can always copy and paste them onto the external hard drive.
This is the solution thats accessible to your right now. Both Apple and Google offer users some amount of free cloud storage to keep whatever files they want on their servers. You can upload any files to the cloud, and some of your space may already be filled by your photo library, but you can upload an additional backup just to be sure. The biggest benefit to using the cloud to store your photos is that its not in a physical location close to you.

What Is Scanner Resolution
Image resolution refers to the number of pixels captured by the scanner sensor and is measured in dots per inch . The higher the dpi, the greater the scanner’s ability to capture detail.
For example, a scanner with a resolution of 1200 dpi can capture 1200 pixels per inch of an image.
Very high-resolution image scanners are used for scanning for high-resolution printing, but lower-resolution scanners are adequate for capturing high-quality images for computer display.
The scanner’s resolution is determined by the number of sensors in the scanning head.
