Why And How Often Do Printer Drum Units Need To Be Replaced
Although laser printers are statistically cheaper in the long run when it comes to printing costs, they have some special requirements that need to be known. Under the hood, the laser printer is a very complex machine with many internal components working in tandem to create that crisp printed image on your page. With lasers, mirrors, photoconductor drums, rollers, and fusing units, all being essential to the printing process. These parts must be properly maintained and replaced as needed. While most of these parts are directly built into the machine, some of them, like the printer drum, can be removed.
It may come as a surprise for some, but drum units need to be replaced every so often to keep up the quality of the printing. Drums are the shell that toner cartridges are placed in and allow for the toner to adhere to the paper.
Drum units are items that, alongside toner cartridges, need to be replaced after consumption.
Many consumers have the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. But the replacement of a drum unit is vital to laser printers’ health. A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won’t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
Sadly, there are no special tips to get around this pesky occurrence, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re using a brand name cartridge or cheap printer ink replacement.

How Do I Know When To Replace A Drum Unit
Many printers today have a two-piece cartridge system consisting of a toner and a drum. Even though the unit has a one-piece appearance, there are two pieces that can be separated. The drum unit is the plastic tray with a shiny cylinder that the toner cartridge sits in. To remove the toner from the drum unit, simply push down on the blue/green plastic lever and gently pull the toner out. As you will not need to replace the drum every time you replace your toner cartridge, your drum will eventually need replacing.
So how can you tell if your drum needs to be replaced? You should replace it when your image quality declines and does not improve even after changing your toner. Or simply replace your drum when your printer notifies you to do so. When the replace drum light or message comes on, your printer might stop working without much notice. However, most printers will continue to work with the replace drum warning long after the light comes on. It is best to be prepared and keep a drum on hand as a back up. Most drum units are good for about 3 toner replacements. You can extend the drum life and keep it clean by occasionally cleaning the corona wire. You can simply do this by sliding the little plastic piece attached to the corona wire back and forth a couple of times.

How Long Does A Laser Printer Drum Last
The answer depends on how often you print. In general, a printer drum lasts about three or four times longer than your toner cartridges.
Thats why all-in-one cartridges are a bit of a waste youre tossing out a drum unit thats still got plenty of life left in it every time you replace a toner cartridge.
Which is better: separate toner and drum cartridges or all-in-one cartridges?
From an environmental standpoint, separate toner cartridges and drum units are better. After all, theres no reason to toss perfectly good drum rollers into landfills every time you need to replace your toner.
From an economic standpoint, separate toner cartridges and drum units are also a better bet. Toner-only cartridges are far less expensive than all-in-one units, and can be replaced three or four times before you need to replace a drum unit. This might save a few bucks in the long run.
Toner cartridges that contain a drum unit typically are more expensive than toner cartridges that do not. The reason for this is pretty self-explanatory you are receiving two separate parts within one component.
From a practical standpoint, overall running costs for printers using all-in-one cartridges and printers using separate toner cartridges and drum units are about the same.
The truth is, both formats work great, all-in-one cartridges as well as separate toner and drum units.
