Printers can be a pain to set up as doing so is never really all that cut and dry. Youll likely need information that you didnt even know you needed. This is more so true when setting a printer up on a network than in the home but in both situations, neither process involves giving the printer an easy to remember name.

Inside most homes, youll likely find only a single printer which makes it simpler as its the only one connected to your system. Workplace printers are a whole different can of worms. Chances are good, especially in an office setting, that there is more than one printer connected through a network.

This sort of thing could lead to confusion, such as trying to remember exactly which printer has been assigned to you for use in the office or department. The names of printers are usually set up as the printer s manufacturer and model number.

That does sound confusing. How would you change the name to make it more office friendly?

If youre finding it hard to keep track of each connected printer, so long as you have administrative permissions, you can rename it to something simpler for easy identification.

    Rename Printer In Windows 10

By default, the print dialog box in Windows 10 shows all the that you are currently connected to and also printers that were previously connected to your computer.

This practically results in all your previous/current Home and Office Printers appearing in print dialog box, which sometimes makes it harder to select the printer that you actually want to print to.

Also, the default tendency in Windows 10 is to name printers using Make and Model Number of the printer.

This can lead to more confusion, if your computer is connected to two or more printers from the same manufacturer.

Even if your computer is not connected to multiple printers, you may still want to Change the Name of your Printer to something that you can easily relate to.

How To Rename Your Printer On Windows 10

On Windows 10, when you add a new printer, the installation process assigns a default name based on the manufacture name, series, and model number. Although this information should be descriptive enough to identify the printer, there are still plenty of reasons to change the name of the device to something different.

For example, if you print to multiple printers in different locations, you may want to update the name to identify the device better. You’re a network administrator, and you need to comply with your organization device naming convention policy. You recently installed a new printer with a different driver to make it work on Windows 10, and the printer now shows the wrong name, or you don’t like the default name, and you want to use something different.

Whatever the reason it might be, Windows 10 includes multiple ways to rename a printer using the Settings app, Control Panel, PowerShell, and even Command Prompt.

In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the different ways you can change the name of a printer installed on your device.

  • Specify a new name for the printer.

Quick tip: If you’re setting up a printer for an organization, you should be using a unique descriptive name. Usually, you would want to use the location, brand, and model as part of the name.

  • Click the Apply button.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Once you complete the steps, the name of the printer will change to the name you specified.

    How To Rename Printer Ports

Renaming printer ports is something that you may want to do if you want to simplify the naming of different printer ports on a network, especially if there are multiple printers set up. Using the default naming that is applied to a printer port when the printer is installed can be confusing. It is easier to determine what printer a port is used with if it has a name that describes what room or location it is installed at, or the name of the printer it is assigned to is used as the port name. You can rename the port either during or after the printer installation
