How To Open An Hp Ink Cartridge
Although HP ink cartridges are intended for one-time use, you can purchase refill kits fairly cheaply which enable you to get extra life out of your existing cartridges and save your company money. Opening a cartridge for this purpose is easy, and you do not need to disassemble it.
1
Set the cartridge on a stack of facial tissue. If your refill kit came with a plastic stand to use, place the cartridge in the stand and set it on top of the tissue. You might also want to put on disposable gloves.
2
Carefully peel back the cartridge label to expose one or more holes. These are injection holes for the ink.
3
Optionally, use a sharp tool such as a knife or a flathead screwdriver to pry the top off . However, the covers on some HP ink cartridges are sealed, and if you do this, you could break the cartridge. Removing the top is not necessary if your intention is to refill it.

To Refill The Cartridge Proceed As Follows:
After removing the label, you can see the filler openings. The colour cartridge has 3 ink chambers for the 3 colours cyan, magenta and yellow. The allocation of the ink chambers is shown in picture 2.
Insert the needle of the syringe into the respective ink chamber until 3mm above the bottom . You will notice a little resistance due to the sponge inside the cartridge. Now carefully insert ink into the ink chamber. If ink leaks from the filler opening, you filled in too much. To extract 1-2 ml of ink, withdraw the needle to the upper third of the cartridge and draw ink back into the syringe. Repeat this procedure with the other ink chambers until no ink leaks from any of them.
To refill the black cartridge, insert the needle into the cartridge until 3mm above the bottom . You will notice a little resistance due to the sponge inside the cartridge. Make sure you purchase the right ink cartridges for your specific printer and printer region or have your old ones refilled. Cartridges are not compatible between different brands, and often not within the same brand. Unlike other inkjet manufacturers, HP often designs its inkjet hardware to use country-specific consumables. When you unbox a new HP inkjet printer and set it up, you install a set of ink tanks that ship with the printer. As you turn on the device and get ready to use it, an initialization sequence localizes it to the country associated with the ink cartridges you installed. HP recommends that you use Original HP ink cartridges.
XL cartridges cost more but do provide better value in the long run. They will be able to print almost 3 times as many pages as a regular cartridge. Our advice is that if you print often, go with XL. However, ink can dry up. So if you are not a frequent printer, go with the regular cartridges.
You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software, printer control panel or HP Smart.
To check the ink levels from the printer control panel The ink level icons on the printer display show an estimate of ink remaining in the cartridges. The left ink icon shows the estimated ink level of the tri-color cartridge, and the right icon shows the estimated ink level of the black cartridge.

How To Install Or Replace An Hp 902 Cartridge
Installing a new cartridge or replacing an old cartridge in the HP OfficeJet 6978 printer is easy.
1. The first thing you will want to do is lift up the entire scanner unit
and wait for the carriage to center.
2. You can take out the cartridge you need to replace by gently pushing on it.
It should pop up and easily remove with a little shaking motion.
3. If you have a brand new OEM HP 902 cartridge, go ahead and remove the plastic wrap the cartridge came in.
Pro Tip: I like to prep new cartridges over a trashcan because sometimes a little bit of ink can escape as you unwrap them.
4. The first thing you will want to remove is the orange clip on the bottom of the cartridge. This clip protects the cartridge while its in transit and the cartridge will not fit into the printer if you leave this on.
It should snap off with a simple twist.
5. The other thing you need to remove is the yellow tape on the top of the cartridge. Gently pull on the tape to remove, this will expose the vent hole on the cartridge so it can work properly in your machine.
Pro Tip: Avoid touching the gold contact chip when handling the new cartridge. This chip is very sensitive and touching it might cause a bad connection with printer and might cause an error message.
6. Next, install the magenta cartridge. The tab goes in the back. Make sure the cartridge is facing the right way when you are installing the cartridge properly.
The M on the cartridge should line up with the M in the machine.

Please Observe The Following General Advice:
Never print until the cartridge is completely empty. It is better to fill in a small amount of ink once in a while to avoid the injectors drying out and plugging and keep the sponge inside the cartridge malleable. After refilling, let the cartridge with sponge rest on an absorbent underlay for approximately 15 minutes. Never insert a dripping cartridge into the printer! Clean the print head with distilled water at regular intervals.
