Types Of Printers For Vinyl

There are a lot of different types of printers you can use for vinyl. The two most common for office purposes, however, are the Desktop Inkjet and the Large Format Inkjet

Desktop Inkjet

This is a great printer for when you have a small office project for something you want to use in your business. You can look for printable vinyl for inkjet printers that is compatible for use with a simple desktop inkjet printer, and that comes in letter-sized sheets for easier printing.

Such materials wont require you to purchase special ink for the printing job. That means the costs will be minimal on your end. Additionally, you wont have to wait too long for the print to dry as it will take just as long as the regular output from an inkjet.

While the ink will dry fairly quickly, you may need to let your printed vinyl set for an entire day before they can be considered to be fully water resistant. Dont worry about outdoor use, however, as no extra treatment for the surface or special fixatives for the substrate will be required after this.

Large Format Inkjet Printer

If youre a professional sign maker, or you want to make a proper professional vinyl print, then the large format inkjet printer is your best bet. These printers are specially built to run on roll-fed media. Many of them come with LED lamps for the curing of ink. No sooner does the output leave the printer than it is completely dry and ready for use. That makes for plenty of saved time.

Making easy vinyl stickers at home with a laser printer Sticker Business

It is recommended you use only an inkjet printer to print vinyl stickers because inkjet printers for vinyl use inks while a laser printer uses toners. The vinyl stickers are designed to be used with inkjet printers, but laser printers, according to some users, get the work done just the same, but you shouldn’t use a LaserJet printer.

The standard Vinyl used in an inkjet printer cannot be used in a LaserJet printer. After all, they produce very high temperatures and can result in the breaking of your laser printer. However, the best printer for stickers is the wide-format inkjet printer for hobbyists or professional signmakers.

Laminate And Cut Your Sticker Designs

As mentioned before, we will need to apply a laminate layer over the vinyl sticker/decal to ensure longevity. Some of the printable vinyl packs come with a laminate layer, whilst with others, you will need to purchase this additionally.

  • Make sure to peel back the over-laminate slowly.
  • Peel back the top of the laminate sheet .
  • Align it with the vinyl paper.
  • Press down, continue peeling back slowly running your fingers smoothly over the laminate to make sure it sticks to the vinyl sheet.
  • Repeat running your fingers smoothly so there are no air bubbles.
  • Cut out the laminated stickers. You could also simplify this process by cutting out your stickers with a vinyl cutter.
  • Here is a video that shares a few tips on how to get the best laminate effect:

    Sticker Paper Test: Tear

Have you ever tried to take the backing off a sticker and accidently tear the sticker? If you are wanting to sell stickers- you dont want to have stickers that tear easily! So I did a tear test!

This was where I started weeding out some sticker paper. 1, 3 and 4 are clearly PAPER sticker Paper. The other sticker paper almost feels a little more plastic/vinyl feeling and were harder to tear! But 1, 3, and 4 were so easy to tear! The hardest one to tear was number 7- I had to realllllly try and only made a slight dent in it.

    Winner: number 7

    Losers number 1, 3, and 4

    Two Apply Vinyl Laminate

At this point, you could simple cut and apply your decals, but if you want them to be extra durable , then you should first apply a vinyl laminate overlay. On its own, inkjet printable vinyl is rated to last outdoor for one year, but when you add a laminate overlay, it will last for 4-5 years. I made my laptop skin a year and a half ago, and it still looks great, and I think the laminate is why it has held up so well. You can choose from a glossy or a matte finish. For these decals I went with the glossy overlay.

Start off by cutting your laminate down to 8.5 x 11. Peel one edge of the laminate away from the backing and carefully line it up with the edge of your page. Using your application tool , slowly smooth the laminate down onto your vinyl while pulling the backing away.

Use your application tool to burnish the laminate overlay onto the printed vinyl sheet.

Final Thoughts: Is All This Kit Really Worth The Investment

Whenever Im thinking about an investment, I take a lot of factors into consideration, including the fun factor and the creative fulfillment factor is this something I really want to get into? Will it be fun, and will it spark me and inspire me, and even make me a better or more complete artist?

I dont always think of making money, though well, let me explain that. If I was going to spend a few hundred dollars on a new printer and a Cricut, and a few dozen dollars more on paper and other supplies, it is entirely possible that I could make such great stickers, and that they would be so popular, that I would make back my investment in no time. And for sure, making attractive promotional items and freebies for good customers is always a financially sound idea.

But I dont really let myself think that way, or at least too much that way. For one thing, it might not happen that I make a profit, no matter how good my product is even though so many people do so well selling their vinyl sticker creations. But more than that it puts a lot of pressure on the fun process, and even can affect my creativity in a negative or limiting way. So, does this mean that I have to justify my investment solely on how much fun it will be, or how creative it will make me?

At that point, fun and creativity are just a bonus!
