However, the smoother/ less faceted your surface is, the larger your file. 3D printing can only accept a certain file size therefore its important to find a balance between your model, its desired surface, and the 3D printing process of your choice.

    How Can You Make Your Own Models

    There was a time when Computer Aided Design software was designed by engineers, for engineers. This software used to be extremely complex and no one except those with the proper training could use CAD software effectively.

    CAD software has a steep learning curveTimes have changed, and the latest in CAD software is aimed at general users. The best thing about modern CAD software is that it is not as difficult to learn and use as it was previously however, the learning curve is still pretty steep, and you would need to dedicate quite a bit of your time and effort to fully grasp all the concepts of 3D printer-ready design using CAD.

    In order to learn the basics of CAD designing software, check out Autodesks 123D Design and Inventor Fusion. Both of these programs are free for limited licences. You can use the free versions of these software tools to design models for printing.

    One thing to bear in mind, however, is that the free/limited/student versions of CAD software do not generally allow you to sell your printed objects, or to sell the files you create. As always, you need to do your own due diligence and investigate the licensing for any software you download.

    If you plan on 3d printing as a business, then you really do need to invest in a commercial software licence.

    At the start of a project, choose a file format that can comprehensively describe the design while suiting the intended applications and minimizing the need for file conversions.     How Do I Convert An Image Into An Stl

    Converting an image into an STL file requires you first to convert the image into grayscale. Tools like IMAGEtoSTL examine the small details of your print or JPG file based on the luminosity of every pixel. Then it creates the corresponding 3D pixel.

    Its luminosity determines the pixels height black pixels have a resistant size which does not get included in the final 3D model.

    The next steps of the process are only important if you use home printers. You can optimize rotation to let the software determine how to best position the body on the print pad. Then you can automatically add supports. Keep in mind that for online services like i.materialise, you do not need to add any supports as we will add those automatically if necessary. Most of our 3D printers do not even require support structure during their printing process.

    In the last two steps, you can preview your print and export the file.
