There are many CAD programs out there that can be used to create your model, but some are definitely more tiered towards beginners which is what Ill focus on in this article. Also, many higher level programs actually need to be purchased, so youll be happy to know everything I recommend will be completely free.

The one that I will focus on and do recommend is TinkerCAD for beginners because it was definitely designed for you guys in mind. Beginners dont want a complicated CAD program that takes a while getting used to, they want to be able to put something together in the first 5 minutes and see its capabilities.
One of the great features of TinkerCAD is the fact that its browser-based so you dont have to install some huge program file to get started. Just go to TinkerCAD, create an account, go through the short tutorial on the platform and get to modeling.
Once you get the hang of one CAD program and the way designing a model works, you can move onto other programs, but at first just stick to one simple program.
TinkerCAD has enough capabilities to keep you modeling there for at least a few months, before you think about moving to a software with more features. For now, it will work wonders!
Aesthetic Finish: Priming Masking And Painting
Priming ensures paint adhesion to the surface and can alert you to where you may need to sand more or trim support marks you may have missed. Generic plastic primer in matte grey shows details exceptionally wellapply it to the surface in several thin coats for the best results. For a finish with multiple colors, youll need to mask your model. Start with the smaller parts so youll need to cover less when painting the bulk of the area with the main color. Use painters tape for covering the edges and corners, and sheets of paper to cover larger sections faster. Tape guides can also be helpful to create clean lines, circles, and complex shapes.
Just as with priming, apply several thin coats rather than one heavy coat for the best results. Most spray paints work best in warm, slightly humid, and not windy conditions, but always check the specific paint can or technical documentation for the manufacturers recommendations.

FreeCAD is a free 3D modeling software with some real skin in the game, having been initially released back in 2002, and despite still being in beta stage development has progressed significantly. Its designed to make creating 3D versions of real-life objects as effective and simple as possible.
A very useful feature is the ability to start with a static 2D sketch, which you can then build your eventual 3D model from as you progress. FreeCAD works well on Windows as well as functioning effectively as a free 3D modeling software for Mac users, and once youve created your model, you can seamlessly export it as an STL, OBJ, or even DXF files for other uses such as CNC.
Though designed with mechanical engineering in mind, FreeCAD complements 3D printing as complex, interesting shapes and figures can be created with relative ease despite not being as complicated as some CAD programs on this list. Adjust Your Stl Export Settings As Needed
The STL file format is the format of choice for most 3D printers, mostly because of its compact file size. This is possible because 3D models in the STL file format are represented using a series of tessellated triangles. This is a method for simplifying a 3D model by reducing each curved surface to small triangles that interlock with each other. Despite the drop in resolution, the quality of STL files is often good enough for 3D printing.
When exporting a model from a CAD platform to the STL file format, you have full control of the resolution of the file, or how many triangles the surface of the model will be made out of. As you would expect, a low-resolution file is smaller and easier to share but may result in a more pixelated appearance. One the other hand, high-resolution files are highly detailed but are much harder to upload or send.
When choosing the resolution of an exported STL file, the purpose of the file must always be considered. Do you need to send the file as part of your professional work, or are you just uploading it to a free site for fun? Does the model have a lot of fine details that will make a high-resolution rendering worth the added file size?
In any case, a maximum file size of 100 MB is often a good rule of thumb to follow. Most free-to-download sites have also set it this limit, likely as an effort to optimize their server storage.

Supports For 3d Printing Miniatures
The next setting you want to tweak is supports. Not all miniatures need supports, but models with significant overhangs will print better with supports than without supports.
If you wanted to print a model with spread out wings, the wings would not have anything to print on. The wings would probably collapse mid-print, or they may end up getting printed in mid-air and youd be left with a stringy mess!
Supports are a double-edged sword, though. They can be difficult to remove, and even after removing them, you may be left with little bits and pieces that dont come off quite as easily, leaving you with a lot of sanding and post-processing to do.
This is fine for a single model, but for a tabletop game that may require hundreds of models, youre looking at a lot of work!
Two things you can do if you use Cura to make working with supports easier is to use tree supports instead of regular supports and to use the Custom Supports plugin to let you place supports only where you want them instead of having Cura fill up the whole model with supports.

Orient Based On Resolution And Strength
3D prints made using FDM technology naturally come out with visible layer lines. This is an inherent consequence of the reliance of FDM printers on relatively wide nozzles. However, the resolution along the z-axis can somewhat be controlled by setting the thickness of these layers. Resolution on the x-axis and y-axis, however, is determined by the size of the nozzle.
This is something you may need to consider if your model has very fine details. If you want precise details in your model, then it would be best to have those details oriented along the z-axis. While its true that models can be rotated along any axis in the slicer software, you still need to keep in mind that resolution is not equal among all three axes.
If you are designing a part that is meant to bear a significant load, you may also need to consider the strength limitations of FDM printing. Basically, the layer lines are the prints weakest points any stress parallel to them can cause them to get pulled apart from each other. For best results, it would be best to design your model so that any stress is applied perpendicular to the layer lines.

New 3d Printer Here’s How To Create Your Own Printables
Free tool Tinkercad makes it a snap for first-timers to create 3D objects for printing.
Recently I got the chance to spend some time with a Micro 3D Printer, my first foray into the world of turning a spool of plastic filament into, well, just about anything.
I had lots of fun downloading existing designs from sites like Pinshape and Thingiverse, but eventually I wanted to create objects of my own. Unfortunately, I don’t have a degree in CAD or access to any kind of 3D-design software.
Good news: Turns out you don’t need either one. Autodesk’s Tinkercad is a free Web-based design tool that enables you to create 3D objects, then download those creations in a printer-friendly format. Here’s how to get started.
Step 1: Head to Tinkercad and sign up for a free account using Facebook, Twitter or your e-mail address.
Step 2: The service will immediately walk you through a lesson to help you learn basic navigation, followed by another lesson that teaches camera controls, and so on. It’s a good idea to go through all of these, just to familiarize yourself with the environment.
Step 3: When you’re ready to create your own object, return to the Tinkercad dashboard, then click Create New Design. The tool will immediately send you to the design page, complete with a randomly assigned name for your project. You can change the name by clicking Design > Properties, though this can happen at any point along the way.

Comparison Of Bonding Methods
For the largest parts and the strongest adhesion, use 5-30 minute epoxy. It has the longest work time, which helps when adjusting the position of larger 3D printed parts, but also leads to an overall slower assembly process. Most 5-minute epoxies won’t change shape after about five minutes and reach approximately 75 percent cure strength in less than an hour.
The next option is cyanoacrylate , which creates a quick, reasonably strong bond making ideal for small- and medium-sized parts. Clean the part thoroughly before applying it to the surface, as CA does not bond dirty surfaces well. CA has moderate impact strength, but is not recommended for high-impact applications.
For smaller prints you can also simply use the liquid resin from your SLA 3D printer. Pour a small amount of resin into a tray from the bottle or cartridge, use a dropper or syringe to pick it up, and place it onto the surface to bond. Join the parts and wipe off any excess resin that might spill out around the edges. To solidify the resin and bond the parts, use a 5mw UV laser light pen and direct it to the bonding area around the parts.
This method will create a chemical bond, just as if the part was printed on your SLA 3D printer, but is only applicable to small bonding surfaces as the low power light pen cannot penetrate the model deep enough to create a strong bond.
Note: When dealing with resins, make sure to wear protective equipment including appropriate eye protection and gloves.
