How To Print From Your Android Phone Or Tablet
As Android technology progresses, so does your ability to get everything done right from your Android phone or one of the best Android tablets. Google has designed a cloud printing app that works with your printer connected either to your wireless network or to your computer via USB. Here’s how to set up Google Cloud Print within Chrome on your computer and how to start printing directly from your Android device.
Is Google Cloud Print Still Available
A commonly recommended way to print from an Android phone via any printer was by using the Google Cloud Print service.
Google Cloud Print is no longer available. It was phased out at the end of December 2020. Even if you used it before, you no longer can.
Cloud Print was a system that enabled you to print to virtually any printerâeven if it wasn’t wirelessâfrom anywhere. It was a classic Google product: in beta for a decade and then shut down.
The service was initially designed to aid printing from Chrome OS. Our guide will show you how to print from a Chromebook.

Depending on what printer you’re using, you might not even need to download a specific app to use it. Android 8 and above includes the Default Print Service, which can automatically detect and set up compatible printers on your network. From Android 9 and later, the compatibility includes printers that support Wi-Fi Direct.
If your printer is fairly recent, there’s a good chance it will be compatible.
To use it, go to Settings > Connection preferences > Printing and select Default print service. Toggle the service to On and it will begin scanning for compatible printers on your Wi-Fi network. If your shows up, simply select it to complete the setup process.

How To Install The Octoprint For Android App
Download the Octo4a apk from the Releases page. I recommend downloading the file directly from your device, to avoid needing to copy the apk file manually.
Install the APK on your device. If you havent enabled unknown sources, make sure you do. You wont be able to install OctoPrint for Android without it.
Open the Octo4a app and start the installation process. It will take up to 30 minutes to download all the files and install the latest version of OctoPrint
If you get a message similar to this, choose Yes. This will allow the OctoPrint for Android app to run OctoPrint in the background without closing the process.
After the installation process is done, OctoPrint will start, and the IP will be shown on the screen. In this case, the IP is 192.168.0.138:5000. You can now take the IP and type it in your computer browser.
If everything is running correctly, the OctoPrint Setup Wizzard will be opened. Feel free to configure OctoPrint just like you would do with other OctoPrint servers.
After configuration, you can connect your 3D printer to the Android device. When you do this, a prompt will show up in the app. You can check the Use by default for this USB device option, then click OK.
Now, you can select the /dev/ttyOcto4a serial port in OctoPrint, and click on Connect. The 3D printer will connect to OctoPrint and you will be able to control it from your browser.
Connect Your 3d Printer
In this step we will attach a 3D printer to the Raspberry Pi AstroBox.
Before we can print we obviously need to connect a 3D printer to the Raspberry Pi AstroBox. To do this, just plug the USB cable from the 3D printer to the AstroBox.
After making the physical connection, we need to get the AstroBox to recognize the printer and we need to set up the printer.
Connect the Printer to the AstroPrint Software
With your phone still connected to the AstroBox, navigate to the settings page by tapping the gear icon on the bottom of the page. When the settings window opens, you should see a message informing you that there is no printer connected to the AstroBox.
Tap the Re-scan button and the AstroBox will check again to see if the 3D printer is connected. Your AstroBox should detect your 3D printer and connect to it. Note that the USB Device might not have the actual name of your 3D printer, it might just have the name of the controller your 3D printer uses.
Adjust Printer Profile
Next we need to input some basic settings for the 3D printer, for example the size of the build area. These settings are modified through your AstroPrint account. So, go to and sign in to your account. After you sign in, you will be taken to your Dashboard. You will do a lot of work from the Dashboard, it is where you access all the commands and apps used to control your 3D printer.

While plenty of manufacturers fail to include this simple feature, some printers allow you to connect your device physically and print from Android directly. If yours does, you may want to take advantage of this feature. You will need a USB Type-A to USB Type-B cable, as well as a converter that connects from your smartphones port to the USB Type-A side of the other cable. Steps may vary per manufacturer and printer, but here is a general tutorial for accomplishing this.

How To Add And Manage Printers
Like I said earlier, Cloud Print is now part of the OS. In the past, this app is where youd go to find and manage printers, but since its no longer a standalone product, all that stuff is now tucked away neatly in the Settings menu.
To check your printer situation, first pull down the notification shade and hit the cog icon. On some devices, like anything running stock Android, you may need to pull it twice. This will get you into the Settings menu.
Now, this is where things can get hairy: every manufacturer seems to hide the setting were looking for in a different place. So, for the sake of simplicity and universal acceptance, were going to do this the easy way: tap the magnifying glass icon , then search for Printing.
Regardless of where the setting is on your specific phone, the option should pop up. Tap that guy and be thankful for the search tool. It just saved you a lot of hassle.
Now that youre there, some options may or may not be available. For example, Cloud Print should be there regardless of which type of device you have. But there are also some specifics, like Samsung Print Service Plugin which will be available on Samsung devices, as well as other devices if youve had a Samsung device before. Its interesting.
If youd like to manage your printers, tap on Cloud Print, then the three-button overflow menu in the top right .
If youre not looking to add a printer, though, just tap Settings instead of Add printer.

Follow Astrobox Setup Procedure
Follow the prompts in the AstroBox interface to set up the system.
We will go through a number of steps to configure and AstroBox. The process is fairly straightforward, there are only a few notes to make:
- When you are naming your AstroBox, do not use underscores. This is a known issue and it is probably one AstroPrint will fix soon.
- When you get to the step asking you to sign in to your AstroPrint account, if you have trouble logging in, try connecting your Raspberry Pi using an Ethernet connection instead. I actually went through the setup procedure a few times and occasionally the AstroBox is unable to sign in over WiFi.
- For now we are not connecting a 3D printer, just because I think it is easier to connect the printer and configure settings later on.
Once you are done going through the setup procedure, I think it is wise to restart the Raspberry Pi by unplugging it and then plugging it back in again. Among other things, the new name your gave your AstroBox will not show up in as the hotspot name until you reboot the Raspberry Pi.
