What Causes The Printer Queue To Get Stuck

Windows® XP: How to clear the print queue

Like mentioned before, there are several different reasons why your printer queue might get stuck and go in a not responding state. Some of the reasons are but not limited to:

  • Printer problems: Your printer might be in an error state with low ink or pages being the primary reason. The printer queue appears to be stuck here and doesnt entertain further documents until it is deleted.
  • Printer Spooler: Spooler is the software which prepares and manages all your documents. It maintains the very list of printable documents and passes them on to the printer. It can be in an error state or might not be configured properly.
  • Printer services: The printer services might not be running properly or their running status might be interrupted by another third-party application.

Before we dive right into the solutions, make sure that you have a valid internet connection between the printer and your computer. Also, your printer must be working properly without any errors whatsoever.

The solutions listed will help clear your printer queue but it may get stuck again if your printer is not configured properly.

It can be frustrating when you want to use your printer but a previous document is in the queue. You try to print several other files to see if printing would start, but they all get lined up. No error message is received, and yet the status remains Printing indefinitely.

Delete The Print Queue Manually:

First, turn off the Printer, next you need to stop the Printer Spooler. You can stop the Printer spooler in different ways.

Open Service Management Console and look for the Printer Spooler Service and right-click on it and choose Stop.

Or, Open Command Prompt in elevated mode and type the following command and hit enter. This will stop the Printer Spooler.

net stop spooler

Now open the run command by pressing Windows + R and type the following path.

%windir%\System32\spool\PRINTERS

This path will take you to the printer spooler location, where the queue will be stored. Delete all the items from the path.

Once you deleted all the items just open command prompt and type the following command to start the printer spooler.

Net start spooler

Open the service management console and make sure the Printer Spooler is started and running. Mostly this will fix the issue.

Why Your Print Job Wont Delete In Windows

Its bad enough when your printer is physically jammed up.

Whats more frustrating is if the document youre printing gets stuck in the queue preventing further documents from being printed, or the printer continually prints the same job over and over. Whatever the case may be, youd want to cancel or delete the print job to save on paper and ink.

However, the printing process works differently in Windows. When you send a print job to the print queue, the print files dont go directly to your printer but arrive in the spooler, which manages all print jobs.

The spooler also lets you change the order of pending print jobs or remove them altogether. If a problem occurs, the print files remain in the queue as none of the files can be printed.

When that happens, the first solution would be to delete the print job to allow other print jobs that accumulated to print. But this wont work if you cant delete the print job.

To unglue the queue and get things going again, here are some fixes to try when conventional methods wont work.
