Adding Your Printer To The Network

How to Setup Wireless Network Printer in Windows 10

After ensuring that Windows 10 and printer software are up to date, the next step is going to be adding your printer to a wireless network. Specifically, it must be connected to the same network as your computer otherwise it wont be able to sync wirelessly and your computer wont see the printer.

Start with the Automatic Setup Feature

In most cases, Windows will automatically detect your printers, even if theyre on the network but were never previously connected to the computer. But in some cases, youll need to give Windows 10 a push in the right direction.

Start by selecting Settings from the Start menu. Once in Settings, select Devices and then select Add a Printer or Scanner. In most cases, Windows 10 will automatically detect your printer and add it to the list of available printers for your computer. But if not, youll need to complete a few more steps.

Connect The Printer With The Wireless Setup Wizard

Use the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer control panel to connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network.

  • Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router.

  • Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, and then select Wireless Setup Wizard.

  • Select the name of your network, and then enter the password to complete the connection.

If the Wireless Setup Wizard is not listed, select Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS, select Push Button, and then follow the steps to connect to the network.

  • Connecting A Wireless Printer To Windows 10

Again, as mentioned earlier, setting up a wireless printer will differ from product to product for both Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth. Refer to your products owner or user manual to find out more about the process.

Updating your Windows OS to the latest version may also be required to ensure up-to-date driver support. Windows 10 should have no problem finding the printer device linked to the same network through Wi-Fi.

Most wireless printers support Wi-Fi Direct, which lets you connect it to your PC directly even when a local network is unavailable. The printer serves as a Wi-Fi access point. After establishing peer-to-peer connection via Wi-Fi Direct, you can access the printers Web-based setup page and complete the network configuration. If your printer has a LCD screen, the on-screen Wi-Fi setup wizard lets you connect to your router much easier. Once your wireless printer is connected, you can add or install it on any Windows 10 computers you want to print from.

How to Add / Install a Wireless Printer in Windows 10

Open the Settings app with Win + I keyboard shortcut, and then navigate to Devices -> Printers & scanners. On the right side, click Add a Printers or scanner.

If your printer is detected, select it and click on Add device. Windows 10 will automatically download and install the printer driver. Just wait for it to complete and youre done.

When Windows doesnt detect your printer, click on The printer that I want isnt listed link.

The pop-up wizard gives you a list of different options to help you find the printer. I recommend you choose the Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname option.

Enter the IP address of your printer and leave other settings as they were. Click Next.

The next window allows you to rename the printer. Click Next if you dont want to change it.

    Thats it!

    Setting Up Your Printer

Theres no one single way of setting up a wireless printer. The major printer brands Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP, among others all use different steps to set up their printers on Wi-Fi networks or via Bluetooth. Even within the same brand, the way you get started changes from product to product.

The best advice is to consult your printers product or user manual. If you cant find yours, try searching for it online using the exact product name, which should be somewhere on the printer, either printed directly on the case or on a sticker. Only download user manuals from the manufacturers website.

    Looking For Password Managers

When following a printer’s set-up guide, you might run into the following terms.

A printer driver is a piece of background software that teaches your device how to use it. Without the driver, your PC, tablet or phone won’t know how to ‘drive’ the printer.

When first connecting to a printer, your computer, tablet or phone should automatically download and install or update the drivers, so an internet connection might be needed during set-up. However, Windows has some up-to-date printer drivers pre-installed, so you might be able to skip this step. And Apple’s AirPrint technology side-steps the need for drivers.

If the installation isn’t automatic, you can search for the drivers online. Make sure you only download them from the manufacturer’s website, wherever possible.

    Network key

Your network key is your home network’s password, including your Wi-Fi. If you never changed your network key, it should be on the same sticker as the SSID. However, we strongly advise you create your own personal key or use a password manager.

Your Service Set Identifier is the name of your home network and Wi-Fi connection.

If you never changed your router’s SSID, it’ll be printed on a sticker, usually on the bottom of the route.

    Wireless connection

This is a vague term that can refer to any wire-free connection technology. For printers, it usually means Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both.

Your Wireless Local Area Network is your Wi-Fi network.
