How To Connect A Printer To A Computer With A USB Cable

The steps to install a wireless printer may vary by manufacturer. In general, however, modern printers today will detect your network and automate the installation.

1. Use the printer’s LCD or touchscreen panel to enter the wireless setup. On my Epson printer this is under Setup > Wireless LAN Settings.

2. Select your Wi-Fi network. You’ll need to know your home network’s SSID, which you can find by hovering your mouse over the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.

3. Enter your network password.

In some cases, you might need to temporarily connect your printer to your computer via USB to install software. But otherwise, that’s it. You should find your printer automatically added in the Printers & scanners section under Settings > Devices.

If you run into trouble, make sure your printer is relatively close to your computer and not too far from your wireless router. If your printer has an Ethernet jack, you could also connect it directly to your router and manage it with a browser interface.

If your printer doesn’t offer wireless connectivity, or you merely wish to use a wired USB connection, just plug it into your Windows 10 computer. Failed Initialization

Sometimes, there might be communication issues between the printer and the PC. The PC might fail to recognize the printer and not display it on the device manager. To fix this:

  • Check the USB ports and the USB cord in use for faults. Replace the cord if necessary.
  • Reboot both the printer and the PC and try reconnecting them.

Failed Driver Installation

Many problems can occur during driver installation, due to issues like maybe outdated OS or a botched installation. There are many ways these issues can be solved, lets go through some of them.

Method 1: Using the device manager.

You can use the device manager on Windows to search for the drivers.

  • Search for the device manager in the windows search box and click on it.
  • Look for the printer, it should be there with a yellow sign near it that indicates a driver problem. If the printer is not there, then check your connection.
  • Right-click on the printer and select update/install drivers from the drop-down list.
  • The PC will search the internet for the appropriate drivers and install them.

Method 2: Manually Installing the drivers.

In case the first method doesnt work, you might need to download and install the driver manually.

How To Install A Local Printer On Windows 10

Windows 10 has made it very easy to set up a local printer. In almost every case, all you have to connect the printer with the computer using a USB printer cable. Should that not work, however, simply follow the steps listed below:

  • Click the Start button and select Settings, then click Devices, and finally, Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add a Printer or Scanner.
  • Once it finds the available printers, choose the one you want to use, and click Add Device.

    The wireless printers are different from the Wired printers because the method to install a wireless printer differs as per the manufacturers. There are following network connections you can find when you connect a wireless printer to the computer:
