How To Add A Printer In Windows 11 With A Wired Connection
Heres the part that feels like magic: Windows 11 can handle printers connected via USB or Ethernet like a champ. This is more about confirming that the printers been added than anything.
1. Connect your printer to your PC. The available physical connections will vary by printer. We used an HP DeskJet 3630 All-in-One for our tests and it only supports a USB 2.0 Type-B connection on the printer side and a USB 2.0 Type-A on the PC side. Other printers will vary, so make sure you have the appropriate cable and corresponding port on your system before you commit to relying on a physical connection between the devices.
2. Open the Printers & scanners page in Settings. The quickest way to do this is to open the Start menu, search for Printers and select Printers & scanners from the results. You can also open the Settings app, select Bluetooth & devices from the sidebar, and then click Printers & scanners from the list of options. Either works.
3. Locate your printer. In our case it appeared as HP DeskJet 3630 Series right away. Windows 11 automatically identified the device and connected to it.
Once your printer appears here it should be available as a print destination across Windows as long as nothing happens to the cable thats connecting your devices.
Add A Wireless Printer
The steps to install a wireless printer may vary by manufacturer. In general, however, modern printers today will detect your network and automate the installation.
1. Use the printer’s LCD or touchscreen panel to enter the wireless setup. On my Epson printer this is under Setup > Wireless LAN Settings.
2. Select your Wi-Fi network. You’ll need to know your home network’s SSID, which you can find by hovering your mouse over the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.
3. Enter your network password.
In some cases, you might need to temporarily connect your printer to your computer via USB to install software. But otherwise, that’s it. You should find your printer automatically added in the Printers & scanners section under Settings > Devices.
If you run into trouble, make sure your printer is relatively close to your computer and not too far from your wireless router. If your printer has an Ethernet jack, you could also connect it directly to your router and manage it with a browser interface.

If your printer came with its setup software, you might prefer using it to install your printer. This kind of software usually has additional tools, depending on your printer model. Get the media and insert it into your DVD reader or go online and download the drivers from your printer manufacturer’s website. If you go for the latter method, make sure you download the right drivers and software for your exact printer model.

Here is a list of drivers web pages for some of the most popular printers: Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Samsung.
Usually, both on optical media or when you download printer software, you get an executable file that you must run, named setup.exe or something similar. This starts an installation wizard and, depending on your printer model, you get more or fewer settings and options. For instance, the setup wizard for an HP F4280 printer lets us check the Readme file and Install the printer, but that’s it.
