S For Manual Print Head Cleaning
Step 1 – Remove the ink tanks and printer head. Remove the ink tanks from the printer head and seal them in a zip lock or other sealable plastic bag. Set them aside, preferably propped upright.
Next remove the printer head . NOTE: You may want to wear latex gloves to help keep ink off your hands.
Step 2 – Soak the printer head. There are multiple suggestions on ways to clean the printer head and all have some variation on the following:
- Get a small, shallow pan and lay down a layer or two of paper towels in the bottom of the container to protect the printer head circuitry from contact damage.
- Heat up enough purified/bottled water to cover the paper towels. You can also use a 50/50 mixture of ammonia and distilled water . Heat the mixture in the microwave for about a minute or so – it should NOT be boiling.
- Slowly pour the water or mixture over the paper towels so that you have approximately 1/2 inch of liquid in the bottom of the pan.
- Set the printer head into the container on top of the towels. You should see ink ‘bleeding’ out. Move the print head to several different spots and shake gently. This will dissolve the ink clogs.
- If the printer head is badly clogged let it soak for 3 to 4 hours or overnight. You can move it slightly to a different spot every hour or so.
Step 3 – Flush the printer head with water.

Start By Brushing The Outside Of The Nozzle
The first step is brushing the outside of the clogged nozzle as it will help remove the residue that is stuck from the outside. Ensure you use the right brush, which in this case, a wire brush is the best for the job. It will remove the stubborn residues from the melted material. Use a brass wire brush with the brass thread. The brass wire brush is to prevent the nozzle from tearing or getting damaged.
If all the blockings get out, then you dont need to go to another step, as the aim was to remove the clogs on the nozzles.
But its good to note this method only cleans the nozzle end. For that reason, it may not solve the clogging problem. And this is where you go to the next step.
How To Clean Epson Print Head
Like Brother printers, Epson printers also have print heads located on a fixed carriage.
Youll need to print a page or run a cleaning cycle and unplug your printer in the middle in order to get the heads in position for Epson print head cleaning.
How To Clean Epson Printhead Manually
- Remove your ink cartridges and set them aside.
- Place a piece of folded paper towel beneath the printheads and position them in the middle of the printer.
- Fill a syringe with a cleaning solution and connect the rubber transfer tube to the tip of the syringe. Print head cleaning solution for Epson printers is available online or you can make your own.
- Connect the other end of the transfer tube to the ink ports located behind the cartridges.
- Slowly pump cleaning solution through the ink port until your see liquid on the paper towel.

- Print a test page. If your Epson print head cleaning doesnt work, repeat the above steps for cleaning Epson printhead.
One suggestion to ease Epson print head cleaning is to submerge your tube of printhead cleaner for Epson printers in a bowl of hot water. This will warm the cleaning solution, making it easier to clean your Epson print heads.

Print At The Right Temperature
Hear this out carefully. The nozzle of the 3D is usually very small, even smaller than the size of the filament. To pass the filament through the nozzle it must be heated at the right temperature. Soaking The Nozzle In Acetone
This is the final resort if youve tried every other method detailed above. This is an effective way to clean a clog, but it does take time and the results may vary depending on the filament material youre trying to remove. Remove the clogged nozzle with a socket wrench and soak it in acetone for at least 15 minutes to dissolve the material. When the material is removed, wipe the nozzle clean of any remaining acetone and allow it to fully dry before you replace it in the extruder assembly. If the clog was caused by ABS it will not dissolve in acetone and you will need to melt it free with a heat gun. Get the nozzle hot, take a thin piece of soft wire and work a hole into the nozzle as you clean the material away. This is a time-consuming process, but it will work if youre patient and methodical.
Cleaning Printheads Built Into Printer
Manually cleaning a printhead that is built in to your printer takes a bit more work. The steps below are for HP printers that have a removable printhead, like the HP OfficeJet 8710. You can also uses this method on non-HP printers with printheads built into the printer.

- 1/4 cup of vinegar
1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide This time, all you have to do is mix these two components and place your 3D printer nozzle inside. Make sure it stays at least 10 minutes before removing it, but if necessary, try leaving it there even longer .

How To Clean A Blocked 3d Printer Extruder Nozzle
Start by unloading the filament. Look for the unload option on the printer menu, select the option and wait for it to heat up before removing the filaments. After that, pull out the filament slowly to avoid any damage.
Then, soak the nozzle in acetone for around 15 minutes and ensure all parts of the nozzle are fully submerged in it. Use a soft cloth to clean and dry the nozzle after 15 minutes. A paper towel can as well be used.
