    Cleaning A Printer Drum

Posted Monday, October 11th, 2010 by Greg Gladman.

A printer drum, also referred to as an imaging drum and a photoconductor, is an essential component of a laser printer as it serves as the catalyst for creating text and images. The drum hosts a positive charge and the text or image is written on it with a negatively charged laser. The positive charge of the toner is attracted to that negative charge and clings to the drum. That toner is then applied to the paper and fused into the papers fibers with a heated fuser.

As you can imagine, the drum does take a beating and will inevitably need to be replaced. However, if you start to notice quality issues such as blotchiness and streaking, you may want to consider cleaning the drum before purchasing a new one. Keep in mind, the surface of these drums are extremely sensitive and you should only attempt to clean it if you are willing to risk damaging it further.

There are primarily two types of drums: Ones that are built into the cartridge itself, such as a Canon L50 toner cartridge, and ones that the cartridge actually snaps into, such as a Brother TN115BK toner cartridge. You may want to consult your manual or manufacturer if you are unsure which type of drum your model uses. Most drums have a similar look, which is generally a long, green cylinder.

To clean the drum, you will need a soft lint-free cloth, standard rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs and potentially a set of tweezers.

  • If applicable, reattach the cartridge.

How To Clean An Inkjet Printer

    You’ll need:

    • Cotton swabs
    • Your printer’s product manual

To be safe, turn your printer off and disconnect it from the power. Note: you might need to plug it back in when cleaning the rollers.

    Paper rollers

Dirty rollers leave marks when they pull paper from the tray into the printer and they might slip or not feed the paper properly. However, cleaning rollers wears them out, so only do it when necessary.

Locate your rollers and see if you can turn them manually. If you can, gently scrub any gunk or dust away with a clean cloth. If needed, dampen the cloth lightly with some water then dry the rollers thoroughly after you’re done.

If you can’t turn them by hand, use the paper feed button to make the printer rotate them for you. This requires your printer to be plugged into mains power, so avoid using water. Disconnect it again before moving on to other internals.

    Printer heads

Printer heads are the nozzles that spray ink. On most modern inkjet printers, they’re part of the disposable/refillable ink cartridges.

If your printer’s self-clean function can’t fix the heads, the user manual might tell you to buy a new cartridge. If this is the case, you may as well try cleaning them yourself first. Remove the problem ink cartridges from the printer and gently wipe the heads with a cotton swab, then place them back in and try the self-clean function again.

    Ribbon

The ribbon, which looks like its name implies, sits behind and is attached to the ink cartridge tray.

    How To Refill The Cartridge

After any cleaning of the cartridge, the cartridge must be refilled. The simplest solution would be to take the cartridge for refueling. If you want to refill the cartridge yourself, do not forget that this is not an easy procedure. By the way, the manufacturers of cartridges themselves do not produce means for refilling them. Inkjet and laser cartridges are refilled different ways.

How to refill an inkjet cartridge. Get quality paint first. Poor quality paint will cause the cartridge to dry out and repeat the cleaning procedure. Take an ordinary syringe and fill it with paint. There is a small hole on the surface of the cartridge, often covered with a sticker. Peel it off without breaking the integrity, and pour the contents of the syringe into the cartridge. Then stick the sticker in place – if you don’t close the hole, the paint will simply spill out.

How to refill a laser printer cartridge. It is worth recalling that the powder used in laser printers is hazardous to health, and the laser printer cartridge should be refilled in an unventilated area using respiratory protection.

The most important stage of work when refueling and restoring cartridges of laser printers is cleaning laser printer cartridges from old toner and various other contaminants.
