How Do I Clean My Hp Printer Heads

As every desktop publisher and computer user knows, the ability to print legible documents on demand is a necessity. Unfortunately, there comes a day when initiating the print command generates a pile of papers on which only half the letters are visible. While changing the printer cartridge is the obvious and immediate cure, the day your HP printer refuses to print is usually the same day you first realize you’re out of ink cartridges. The good news is that you can often save the day by cleaning your HP printer heads.

Recognize that your printer is probably not completely out of ink. HP inkjet printers come equipped with a sensor that warns you when you’re running low on ink, which is measured by the weight of the ink cartridge. However, many times this sensor gets thrown off track when the ink can’t move forward onto the printer heads. This is usually because the tiny holes on the printer heads have become clogged with dried ink, especially if the printer hasn’t been used for some time.

Run the automatic utility tool that comes with your HP printer. This might remedy your problem. Move on to Step 3 to manually clean the printer heads if this doesn’t work.

Firmly grasp the cartridge on the left with your thumb on the top and your forefinger on the bottom and pull in a downward motion. This will release the ink cartridge from its bay so that you can completely remove it. Once removed, place the cartridge on its side on a paper towel or piece of paper.

How To Really Clean An Inkjet Printer In 5 Simple Steps

If youve ever been in this situation, this tutorial will tell you how to really clean your inkjet. By cleaning, I actually mean getting some supplies and physically cleaning your printer.

Print Head: This part of an inkjet printer gets the most wear and tear and generally causes the most amount of problems. It is required to print, however doesnt necessarily have to be included with the ink cartridge. Most of the cartridges youll purchase for inexpensive personal-class Canon, HP, and Epson printers will have a print head built right into the ink cartridge. This will prevent a lot of problems, but also opens the doors to those famous drill-and-fill cartridge shops in the mall that disregard the need to change the head along with refilling the ink.

Print Head Stepper Motor: This motor mainly functions to either park or control the print head assembly. Some printers have a separate stepper motor for parking and controlling the print head.

    Stabilizer bar:

Paper Feed Assembly: This can differ between printers, but for this tutorial, well refer to this term for the part of the inkjet printer that actually picks up and feeds the paper into the printer.

Interface Ribbon: You may see this ribbon behind the print head/cartridges. Its responsibility is to be the messenger to tell the print cartridges what color and where to drop the ink.

Ok, now that we have those terms out of the way, lets start cleaning.

    General Cartridge Cleaning Procedure :

To help overcome poor printing performance, it is suggested you first refer to your printer manufacturers website for cleaning instructions specific to your printer model. For general information purposes, two-ink cartridge printer model cleaning instructions are provided below.

    Clogged Ink Cartridge Recovery

To improve print quality for an integrated ink cartridge, you may need to clean the nozzle plate and/or rear electrical contacts. Using an isopropyl alcohol dampened lint-free moist cloth, gently blot the nozzle plate until some ink is drawn out and absorbed into the cloth. Ensure rear electrical contacts are thoroughly clean of all ink residue and lint fibers. Ensure cartridge is dry before re-installing into printer.

NOTE 1: Only use isopropyl alcohol or de-ionized water on cleaning cloth or wipe. If nozzles are allowed to dry or clog, white streaks may be visible in the printed text or graphic. Printing alone may not remove clogs from the nozzles, sometimes a cartridge clean may need to be initiated from printers control menu or printer software.

Most printers include some form of a test page under the tools or maintenance menu. You may also select an Inkjet411 test print by clicking the button below:
