DIY: How to build your own 3D printer from scratch

ABS and PLA are very different plastics and they each require specific printer configurations. ABS is made from petroleum and is more flexible than PLA. PLA is biodegradable, is more rigid than ABS and will dissolve in water. ABS is more prone to warping than PLA. Good printing results will require a heatbed for ABS. For PLA you can probably get printed parts without warping without a heatbed.

There are many different kinds of ABS and PLA. If your printer is perfectly tuned for the plastic of one vendor you might need to redo your configuration after youve switched vendors. PLA has a lower melting temperature than ABS. Take into account however that the thermistor on a NiChrome wire hotend typically reports lower than actual temperatures. A thermistor on a heatblock typically reports higher than actual temperatures.

Your hotend temperature, extruder speed and axes speeds all need to be in harmony for good printing results. First try to get good printing results at a lower extruder speed . Afterwards you can try to increase the speed. As a rule of thumb printing quality at higher speeds will be worse than at lower speeds although the degradation is usually acceptable.

You dont need to be an electronics buff or mechanical engineer in order to build your own 3D printer. If you can screw a nut on a bolt you can build this printer.

Set The Cooling Feature

When the 3D printing filament extruder works, the nozzle and the motor stay hot.

While the filament is exiting the nozzle, it is still hot and can stretch more than the requirement because of the gravitational force that is pulling it to the ground.

Hence, cooling at this stage is very crucial. Cooling done at this stage will help in maintaining the diameter of the filament.

The fan attached to the machine will also cool down the motor, keeping it working for long.

Now, fix three rocket switches to a piece of wood that will go in the front closing. Also, attach the PID controller and the potentiometer for controlling a motor. You can use hot glue to fix these things to the wood piece.

How To Make Barrel

The pipe used for making a barrel must be smoothed out from the ends to ensure that the movement of auger bit is easy.

Fasten the pipe to the flanges and note the upper area. Make sure to loosen the pipe before cutting the marked area. This is where the pellets will fall in. So, using the multi-tool, cut the marked area.

Use some PTFE tape at the end of the pipe. The motor is very powerful. Hence, ensuring that the pipe does not move with the auger movement is very important.

Now, pick a square wood. Make a hole length-ways. Make another hole that would be orthogonal to the pipe channel.

The first hole is for the pipe to run through it and the second one is to make sure that the bottle fits perfectly and tightly. Later cut the block into halves.

Is It Expensive To 3d Print

Build your own 3D Printer KitLAB

3D printing can cost from $3 up to thousands of dollars. However, it is difficult to give an exact cost because the price depends on several factors, including material, model complexity, labor, and more. Printing on your own, especially if you do it often, is cheaper over time than getting a 3D printing service.

Make 3d Printer Filament By Setting The Extrusion And The Pid

The material is the basic factor to determine what temperature the extruder must be set to. However, to set up the PID controller, you must follow the steps below:

  • Long press SET for at least 3 seconds. This will enable the autotune function.
  • After you see HIAL displayed on the screen, use the down button till you find Ctrl on the screen. Adjust the settings to 2.
  • The autotune will be set to 2. Once again start to press SET until you get to the temperature setting again.
  • You can use the up and down keys to set the temperature as desired. Wait for about 10-12 minutes till you find the flashing stop.
  • This is when you must start the motor for filament extruding. This is how you make 3d printer filament at home.

Make The Most Of Your Creativity

You might feel like making everything on this list in one afternoon, theres so much creativity and inspiration.

Dont get too carried away, though.

Keep the following in mind as you work through these designs to make the most of your creative process.

  • Many of the projects weve included below incorporate multiple colors in their designs. If youre unsure about printing with different colors, try making the design out of a single color first. Then, you can repeat the process with as many colors as you want.
  • Parents concerned about how hard a project might be should also consider trying their hand at it before introducing their child to the concept. This will allow you to head off any issues your child might have before they even start.
  • Dont get stuck on recreating what you see on the screen. Instead, let your own style show through! The best 3D printing pen ideas are those that come from your creative spirit.
  • It is possible to recycle your discarded 3D printed projects to regain the filament. However, the process is not necessarily a simple one if you only 3D print as a hobby. But if you know of a serious 3D printing enthusiast, consider donating your scraps.

Like anything else creative, 3D printing pen ideas flourish when many minds are present. Consider throwing your own 3D printing pen party to help your friends and their families experience the joys of 3D printing.

Advantages Of Diy 3d Printers

  • Open source: Most homemade 3D printers are also open source 3D printers, meaning they can be tinkered with, upgraded, and modded freely with the creators permission. Many Creality, Prusa and Anet printers are open source, as well as desktop 3D printers like BCN3D and Ultimaker printers.
  • Open build areas: 3D printer kits rarely feature closed chambers or enclosures as standard. This would affect the printing of filaments like Nylon or PEEK, but is less of an issue for standard filaments like PLA or PETG.
  • Easily upgradable parts: DIY 3D printer owners are frequently switching out parts, such as nozzles, hot ends and extruders for better quality parts.
  • Lower price: For the quality and size, you get a better deal if you build your own 3D printer.
  • Larger build volume: The open build area means that you can have a larger 3D printer build area for the same size, neglecting the need for an enclosing frame. Therefore, low cost kits like the Creality CR-10 can have huge build volumes.

On image 4 you see the print bottom plate assembled on the Y-axis smooth rods. The Y-axis 6/42 29/10/2014 Building Your Own 3D Printer

has one degree of freedom: it can move between the front and the back of the frame. The Y- axis is controlled by a belt attached to a stepper motor with pulley that you can also see on the image. The print bottom plate has four bushings attached that have been glued to the print bottom plate.

The RepRap axes – like many CNC machines – move over smooth rods with bushings or more recently with linear bearings.

Bushings are actually plain bearings. They slide over smooth rods and provide almost no friction when moving up and down the rods. Usually plain bearings are used to turn around a cylinder On the RepRap the bushings dont turn, instead they linearly move up and down the smooth rods following an imaginary line on the rods.

Linear bearings have little balls inside and provide free motion in one direction. Both bushings and linear bearings can be either printed or sourced as metal parts. Metal bushings are made from brass as it’s the only metal that has low friction and is self-lubricating. RepRap designs that use linear bearings typically use LM8UU metal bearings. The standard RepRap Prusa Mendel design uses bushings that are more than good enough for the purpose. Some people believe a RepRap printer looks more cool when fitted with LM8UU linear bearings

How Does It Work

My 3D printer build : 3Dprinting

3D printing a 3D printer is no different than the manufacturing method of any other 3D printed object. You can actually find the pieces online, but you might need 3D modeling or CAD software to make adjustments. Your parts would be 3D printed layer by layer, the process repeats. You should assure material extrusion runs smoothly and that it produces thin layers. You should also pay attention to the surface finish, although with FDM technology it wont be the smoothest.

Essential 3d Printing Topics

Explore the topics below for an indepth overivew of all the parts and theories that go into building a 3D Printer.

Tools and Supplies

The way in which the extruder liquifies and deposits filament onto the build platform is the defining characteristic of FFF technology.

Linear Rails

Precise linear motion is required for 3D printing. Linear rails act as a guides for motion carriages and in some cases, play a dual role as the frame for the 3D printer.

Linear Rods

Cylindrical guides are affordable alternatives to linear rails. Bearings slide along the rods to provide free motion in the direction of the rod.

Linear Carriages

Carriages ride on top of linear guides, translating their cargo in the direction of the guide. The best carriages provide smooth and low friction movement.

Lead screws and pulleys convert the rotational movement of a motor shaft into linear motion. 3D printers require precise transmission systems to function properly.

Stepper Motors

Stepper motors are brushless DC motors that can move accurately without positional feedback. They are a cheap alternative to servo motors.

Print Bed

The print bed is the surface that the first layer of the print comes in contact with. A heating element and special adhesives can prevent the 3D print from warping and falling off.

After Building The Printer

Now that youve created your printer and added the filament to the extruder, its time to get printing! If youre new to the process, it can be difficult to know how to begin the process of creating the shapes you want. If you need a little friendly boost, there are many sites which offer pre-designed shapes and objects files.

You can download these files and run them through your 3D rendering software to create your first 3D printed parts. Just make sure that your printer is capable of printing out the dimensions specified in the downloaded files for the parts.

Cluttered Lcd Controller Menus

The standard Marlin or Repetier firmware with activated display support makes almost every control option available through the scroll-and-click menu. Its complete, but also cluttered, and lets you navigate through four levels before you can move an axis.

For workshop use, only a fraction of the entries are actually required. Just remove unnecessary entries in the firmware source code. In the source of Marlin, that can be easily done by commenting out unnecessary items in the rather self-explaining ultralcd.cpp.

You can also simplify the move menu to skip the feed rate selection:

/* DISABLING ORIGINAL MOVE MENUstatic void lcd_move_menu */// ADDING CLUTTER-FREE MOVE MENUstatic void lcd_move_menu   END_MENU }
