Using The Lpr And Ipp Printing Protocols On Windows Print Servers

LPR is a legacy protocol developed for UNIX that clients use to send print jobs to print servers. Microsoft has supported this protocol for a number of years via an add-on module called Print Services for UNIX . Under certain conditions Windows LPD printers can cause issues when using PaperCut hold/release print queues. The information included here is to help customers understand the issue and document suggested workarounds.

The mechanism used by the Windows PSfU subsystem to accept LPR and print jobs is different from other implementations in Windows such native SMB based printers. In SMB the event notification to applications such as PaperCut is well behaved and reliable. Event notification for LPR and IPP based printing does not use the same set of underlying APIs and under some conditions the PaperCut print monitoring layer receives notification after the print job has started. This means that some print jobs can start to print before the hold instruction is issued. This job is then suspended in a Paused Printing state and this results in all other jobs on that queue being held up by the paused job.

The symptoms are generally not consistent, suggesting an underlying race condition bug in Windows. Things that can affect the problem include:

  • The current load on the print server

  • The version and patch level of Windows

  • Add A Bluetooth Printer

If your Mac came with Bluetooth installed, or if you are using a USB Bluetooth adapter, you can print wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled printer.

  • On your Mac, update your software: Choose Apple menu ;>;System Preferences, click Software Update, then install any software updates listed. Even if no updates appear, this ensures that macOS has the latest information about printer software it can download from Apple. If you dont do this, you may see a message that software isnt available when you connect your printer.

If you have an AirPrint printer, you dont need to check for software updates.

  • Prepare your printer: Use the instructions that came with your printer to unpack the printer, install ink or toner, and add paper. Turn on the printer and make sure its not displaying any errors.

  • Connect your printer: Follow the instructions that came with your printer to make sure its ready to connect with Bluetooth.

  • Add your Bluetooth printer to your printer list: Choose Apple menu >;System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners. Click the Add button , then click the Default button .

  • Select the printer in the Printers list, then click Add. If the printer you expect to see is not in the list, enter its name in the search field, and press Return.

If your printer doesnt appear in the list, make sure you have the latest Bluetooth driver for the printer installed. Check with the manufacturer for the latest driver.

Add Canon Printer To Mac Using Bonjour Services

Remember the printout of printer configuration settings? At the bottom, you could see three lines starting with Bonjour.

What is Bonjour on Mac? Its a zero-configuration service developed by Apple for its computers and devices. If both a computer and a peripheral device support Bonjour service, then adding peripherals to the computer is easy.

In our case, a Canon printer that supports Bonjour configuration service appears under the Default tab in Printers & Scanners Preferences. You just need to wait a bit for the printer to appear. In my experience, the wait time depends on the distance between the two devices.

If both the MacBook and the printer are in the same room, then Bonjour service is almost instantaneous. If one device in the Basement and another on the second floor, one may need to wait a little longer, about 30 seconds or so for the first time.

Here is how my Canon, which also serves as a scanner, appeared in my Mac .

AirPrint-compatible printers connect automatically to a network and require almost no setup. If the documentation or packaging of your printer says it is AirPrint compatible, it can work with your Mac.

Not all USB printers are compatible with Macs. Check the documentation to confirm your printer is compatible. If it is, it also connects to the Mac automatically, although the setup requires a couple of extra steps.
