Who Determines Paper Size Standards
In the United States, standard paper sizes are decided by the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI. The norm in which all standardized paper dimensions can be found is called ANSI Y14.1.
In the rest of the world, the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, presides over the regulation of paper sizing. ISO 216 is the internationally recognized norm for paper sizes.
Other paper standards do exist. And different countries have their own institutes responsible for developing norms. But the ANSI and ISO systems are the most common paper size standards around the world.
For Printing Grayscale Or Color Images
For photos on photo-quality inkjet printers on Photo paper240 to 360 dpi for color or grayscale, at printer’s better quality setting.300 dpi sometimes may be a little better than 240 dpi, but the difference is often hard to see.
For documents on inkjet good coated paperUse a decent printer quality setting for the text, and photos around 240 to 300 dpi.
For inkjet printer using plain copy paper150 dpi is often enough for images on plain copy paper. The ink soaks into the paper and spreads a little.Coated inkjet paper is better, and photo paper is best.
For digital lab printing servicesDrug stores, Wal-Mart, Costco, Shutterfly, Snapfish, etc.250 to 300 dpi, for up through 8×10 inch size. What Does 300 Ppi Mean
What does it mean for your file design? Well, lets say that youre designing a file which is 8.5 wide and 11 tall. Since every inch contains 300 pixels, that means that your 8.5×11 file should be:
- 2550 pixels wide and
- 3300 pixels tall
We recommend that you set the resolution in your image editor to 300 PPI before starting to design your file. Increasing the resolution after you start will still result in blurriness/pixellation.

A Few Printing Resolution Guidelines
Sufficient pixels to print at 240 to 300 dpi is optimum to print photo images . Line art mode can use double that. More pixels really cannot help the printer, but much fewer pixels is detrimental to image quality. This printing dpi number is also the scan resolution if printing at 100% or original size, but enlargement of 1.5x needs scanning at 1.5x printing dpi.

The United States, Canada, and in part Mexico, are today the onlyindustrialized nations in which the ISO standard paper sizes are notyet widely used. In U.S. office applications, the paper formatsLetter , Legal , Executive, and Ledger/Tabloid arewidely used today. American National Standard ANSI/ASME Y14.1m-1995 specifies how touse the ISO A0A4 formats for technical drawings in the U.S. Technicaldrawings usually have a fixed drawing scale , therefore it is not easilypossible to resize technical drawings between U.S. and standard paperformats. As a result, internationally operating U.S. corporationsincreasingly find it more convenient to abandon the old ANSI Y14.1formats and prepare technical drawings for ISO paper sizes, like therest of the world does.

Resolution Needed To Print An A4 Size Picture
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of pixels depends on the required output quality.
- At 300 ppi an A4-sized image needs to contain 2480 × 3508 pixels. This is the required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance . For photo books, it is also the optimum resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count is fine for great-looking photographs.
- At 150 ppi the image needs to be 1240 × 1754 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.
A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 8 megapixels or more can be used to print high-quality A4 size pictures. A somewhat lower resolution is still fine. Ive had excellent results with my six-megapixel Nikon D70.
For Display On Video Screens

Video screen sizes vary, but all are dimensioned in pixels, and image sizes are also dimensioned in pixels. Scanning at 100 dpi possibly may create roughly original image size on many computer monitor screens, but there is no concept of image size in inches on video screens. The only factor is the image size in pixels, and the screen size in pixels. But remember, you have no idea about your web site visitors screen size .
HDTV screens are 1280×720 or 1920×1080 pixels.

A4 is part of a set or range of page sizes, called the ISO A or ISO 216 standard. This international standard is based on the German DIN 476 standard from 1922. A4 is actually often referred to as DIN A4. The Japanese have adopted the same range of paper sizes in their JIS P 0138-61 standard.
By folding an A4 in two along its shortest side, you create an A5 document. Two A4 pages next to each other in a spread equals the A3 paper size. This way a range of paper sizes is created from A0 to A10. The height/width ratio remains constant for all sizes: 1:1.41 or the square root of 2. The dimensions always get rounded to the nearest millimeter.

History Of The Iso Paper Formats
One of the oldest written records regarding the sqrt aspectratio for paper sizes is a letter that the physics professorGeorgChristoph Lichtenberg wrote 1786-10-25 to Johann Beckmann. In the United States, paper thickness is measured by its weight based on 500 sheets, which is one ream. The reasoning behind this system is that paper is extremely thin, and it is difficult to measure its width, so thickness can be easily determined since 500 sheets of thick paper weigh more than 500 sheets of thin paper.

Resolution refers to the amount of visual detail contained in an image. The resolution of output devices is measured in dots per inch , and in the case of halftones, lines per inch .

- For most artwork, 300 dpi is preferred. Most printers produce excellent output from images set at 300 ppi.
- You can use 150 dpi for large prints because the difference in print quality is not very noticeable on large pieces when you look at the prints from a distance.
- Output device resolutions vary, depending on the type of press and paper used. In general, a photograph is output at a crisp 150 lpi if printed on glossy magazine stock, and at 85 lpi if printed on newspaper stock.
