How 3d Resin Works

Unlike fused deposition modeling printers where the material starts as a solid, resin printer material starts as a liquid. While the liquid resin is not exposed to UV light it will stay in a liquid state. In order to turn the liquid into a solid it must undergo a chemical process. The process uses UV light as a catalyst causing the chemical composition to change. This change results in the liquid resin changing from a liquid state to a solid state.

To understand how the process works we need to examine the molecular structure of the resin. The resin contains molecules called monomers. Monomers are molecules that can bond with other identical molecules and form a polymer. Polymers are substances with molecular structures that are primarily similar molecules bonded together. Many synthetic materials such as plastics and resins are comprised of polymers.

The larger molecular mass of the polymer produces physical characteristics such as toughness and elasticity. The formation of the molecular assemblies results in semi-crystalline structures. This is known as polymerization and results in three-dimensional networks of polymer chains.

Once the print is done the model is then removed from the build plate and washed with a solvent to remove and residual resin. The model is then placed in a curing chamber to finish curing the resin.

D Models And Resin Printing

Resin printing is great for smaller models with high levels of detail. The drawback is that resin printers cost more to operate and can take longer than FDM printers. Many hobbyists use resin printers to print miniatures and accessories for tabletop gaming. The high level of detail can make a 3D printed model indistinguishable from a purchased model that was injection molded.

Below is a picture of two models. The model on the left was bought from a store and is made from injection molded plastic. The model on the right was printed on my Elegoo Mars.

You can see that both models have a high level of detail. In fact, the resin model will look just like a regular model to the untrained eye.

How A Laser Printer Resets Its Components For A New File

The entire process above is how a laser printer prints file onto paper. But now that the photoconductor drum, toner adder roll, and the developer role have all been used, these components must be reset so that the user of the printer can print a new file.

There is a cleaning blade that scrapes all of the excess toners off of the photoconductor drum. The developer role has all excess toner scraped off of its surface by the doctor blade, so it is clean.

It is quite amazing that this entire process takes less than a minute to complete. Also, because toner is not a liquid, there is no need for the user of the printer to retrieve their paper on what their design is printed and set it aside to dry.

Printer ink is made of pigments, solvents, resins, waxes, varnish, and lubricants. The ink is stored in a cartridge. Different printer models come with a combination of ink cartridges. The inks that you can use in your inkjet printers include:

Pigment-based ink

The pigment-based ink comes in powder form then suspended into liquid form. When the ink is evaporated, it makes the print look attractive and appealing. The ink is mostly used in printing labels and professional photos. Unlike dye-based inks, the pigment ink printer resists ultraviolet light. Solvent ink

Although solvent ink is similar to pigment ink, the only difference is that solvent ink uses volatile organic compounds. Besides, the ink dries faster through evaporation hence resulting in high-speed printing. You can use this ink on uncoated vinyl surfaces, such as billboards and banners.

Ultraviolet ink

Ultraviolet ink is a combination of polymer powder and monomer liquid hence resulting in the acrylic monomer. You can prefer UV ink for UV printing since it contains acrylic monomer and photo-initiator. Unlike dye ink which evaporates, this ink is exposed to UV LED light to cause a chemical reaction which ensures the printer prints solid images and labels.

Rolling Photoreceptor Drum Is Positively Charged

History Of The Printer

Before our modern-day printer with its incredible level of precision, the field of printing materials used very draconian methods and machinery. Until the 1980s, the concept of a personal computer was basically non-existent. There were only a few who had hard copies or the infamous dot matrix printers. These made horrendous screeching noises during the process of printing. After its completion, the first laser printer was named Dover and was sold by the company for a whopping $300,000 per unit. What made it so special during its time was the fact that it was able to print 60 copies per minute .

Along the drum path, a toner developer is placed, which subjects the surface to come in contact with positively charged toner particles. The toner is a dry powder made up of pigment and a plastic polymer. Since unlike charges attract and like charges repel, the positively charged surface of the drum doesnt pull any toner particles. Only the negatively charged region on the drum, which makes up the page image attracts or pulls toner particles to the surface.
