Looking For Password Managers
When following a printer’s set-up guide, you might run into the following terms.
Driver
A printer driver is a piece of background software that teaches your device how to use it. Without the driver, your PC, tablet or phone won’t know how to ‘drive’ the printer.
When first connecting to a printer, your computer, tablet or phone should automatically download and install or update the drivers, so an internet connection might be needed during set-up. However, Windows has some up-to-date printer drivers pre-installed, so you might be able to skip this step. And Apple’s AirPrint technology side-steps the need for drivers.
If the installation isn’t automatic, you can search for the drivers online. Make sure you only download them from the manufacturer’s website, wherever possible.
Network key
Your network key is your home network’s password, including your Wi-Fi. If you never changed your network key, it should be on the same sticker as the SSID. However, we strongly advise you create your own personal key or use a password manager.
SSID
Your Service Set Identifier is the name of your home network and Wi-Fi connection.
If you never changed your router’s SSID, it’ll be printed on a sticker, usually on the bottom of the route.
Wireless connection
This is a vague term that can refer to any wire-free connection technology. For printers, it usually means Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both.
WLAN
Your Wireless Local Area Network is your Wi-Fi network.
The Printer Is Off Or Not Connected
Its often the simplest solutions that we overlook. Before you start pulling your hair out, see if the printer is connected to an electrical outlet. This is indicated by a green light on your printer. If the printer is locally shared, you will be able to see the printer connected on the computer task bar.
If the printer is not responding even after youve plugged it in, you can try a few things:
- Restart the printer and try again.
- Unplug the printer from an outlet. You can plug it back in again to see if it works this time.
- Check if the printer is properly set up or connected to your computers system.

What If The Printer Did Not Connect To The Network
Check for network issues and review setup requirements if the printer failed to connect.
-
Check the network connection: Move the printer and computer or mobile device closer to the WI-Fi router, and then check if the signal quality improved. Try opening a website to see if the internet connection is working properly. If Wi-Fi is slow or intermittent, restart the router by disconnecting the power cord, wait 15 seconds, and then reconnect it.
-
Printer is off or in sleep mode: Touch the printer touchscreen or press the Power button to wake the printer and put it in a ready state. Sometimes the printer status might display Offline when it is actually ready.
-
Restart the printer: Restarting the printer can clear possible error conditions and restore the Wi-Fi connection.
-
Check the printer Wi-Fi signal: If your printer has a light next to a Wireless icon or button , make sure the light is on. Check the wireless settings to make sure the signal is turned on.
-
Print a Wireless Test Report: Search the HP Customer Support website for your printer model, and then search for self test page to find the document on how to print and evaluate the report.

How To Add A Printer In Windows 11 Via Wi
Not all printers have to be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network to enable wireless printing via the protocol. Many also support Wi-Fi Direct, which enables peer-to-peer connections between devices, and this option can be useful if you dont want to have a printer available to everyone on a network but dont feel like configuring it to prevent that kind of accessibility.
1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct pairing on your printer. Again, this is the kind of thing that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model, so youll have to refer to your user manual. But this is often a distinct option from general Wi-Fi access.
2. This step is the same as when we connected via an existing Wi-Fi network, but were looking for something new.
3. This option only appears if there are Wi-Fi Direct printers available otherwise theres only an Add manually button. To learn about that, skip to step 7.
5. Enter any requested credentials. In our case a window appeared asking for a WPS PIN. Youll have to find yours somewhere on the printer, its packaging, or potentially the test sheet we mentioned before. Once you have it, enter it.
6. Rejoice or keep going to the next step. Ah, printers. Maybe its a problem with our hardware, perhaps its a pre-release bug in Windows 11, but entering the correct WPS PIN still prompted Windows to display the error message shown below. But we dont have to reach for a bat yetthis is where the manual option comes in.
10. Rejoice or accept your fate.

Windows 10 Does Not Recognize Printer Driver
I have recently updated my desktop from Windows 7 Home premium to Windows10 and suddenly the computer does not recognize the printer hardware. I keep getting the message that the USB device you connected to the computer “malfunctioned” and windows does not recognize it. I am therefore unable to use my printer.
This is odd! The printer driver was working perfectly well until I installed windows 10.
Any suggestions from anyone as to how can I install my printer driver and get it working again?
many thanks.

This drove me buggy too as I have three printers and a scanner all recent with Win 8.1 drivers.
I did not even realize they were not working in Win 10 for a few days until I needed to scan and print.
Reboot, make sure the printers are on and USB cables/hubs properly inserted. Often, regardless of OS, using a different computer based USB port will trigger a reconfiguration of USB recognition.
If you can not reinstall the printer drivers downloaded from the printer manufacturer unplug the printer, reboot, and plug the USB cable from the printer into a different computer based USB port. If the printer still is not recognized you still may not be able to reinstall the drivers manually.
You can go into System, delete the USB drivers and reboot which will force reconfiguration of them but do not do this if you are unfamiliar with these things.
Presumably.
