Power cycling is the act of turning something off and on again. It’s the age-old tech advice, but you’d be surprised how often it works.

First, turn your computer and printer off. Then unplug the printer’s power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait again for the printer to fully boot up—it won’t be returning from standby, so it might take longer than usual.

Once the printer is turned on, switch your computer back on and see if the printer is now online.

Note: This solution works only if youre using a network printer. If you encounter any configuration problems with your printer, weve prepared a simple guide to help you in that situation.

    Manually Adding A Printer

Before starting this procedure, you must ensure the following: your printer has power, is turned on, and is connected to your computer. If you have a network or wireless printer, you should also check if it’s connected to the same network that your computer uses.

Once you’ve double-checked the above, try to restart your printer and see if your computer will detect it now. If it still doesn’t, then let’s proceed with adding your printer manually.

First, click on the Start button, then go to Settings. In the Settings window, go to Devices> Printers & scanners. Under the Add printers & scanners section, select the Add a printer or scanner button. Wait for the computer as it tries to find nearby devices, both connected directly to your computer or via the network.

Once your computer detects all nearby devices, select the one you want to use and click on Add device. It will then automatically add your machine, and you can choose it from your scanning options later.

However, if that doesn’t happen, click on The printer that I want isn’t listed link. Windows will then open a wizard to add your printer. Just follow the instructions to install your device.

Once you’ve added the hardware, you can open the apps to start your scan. Windows offers two ways of scanning documents the first is the legacy Windows Fax and Scan app, and the second is the newer Windows Scan app. We will tackle both below.

My Envy 4500 is offline. From Devices and Printers-> HP Envy 4500…-> See What’s Printing-> Printer, there is no choice to put it on-line is suggested in response to someone else. I reinstalled printer, but it is still off-line.

    Running Windows 10

Thank you for your response. I somehow resolved the problem yesterday. Someone suggested a Window’s 10 cumulative update. I tried to do that, but it appeared to have already been done recently. The update site mentioned rebooting the computer for the update to take affect. I rebooted and the problem went away. I really don’t understand what went wrong or why it fixed itself, but I should have tried rebooting the computer in the first place.

    Troubleshoot With The Printers Software

Many printer brands have dedicated software that fixes printing-related issues on a computer. HP, for example, has a Print and Scan Doctor tool that diagnoses issues with HP printers on Windows devices.

Contact your printer manufacturers to confirm if theres an app for your printer model. Better yet, visit the Support or Downloads section of the manufacturers website to download the printer management app.

Solution Four: Remove And Add The Printer

    • Disconnect the printer from your PC.
    • Navigate to Devices > Printers and Scanners.
    • Select Remove device.

    Printer Queue Settings App

Open the Settings app. Go to the Devices group of settings and select the Printers & Scanners tab. Here you can add a new printer and see a list of all printers currently added to your system.

Select a printer from the list. If you have multiple printers added to your system and youre trying to clear the printer queue for a specific printer you need to remember which one it is. The print queue for each printer is kept separate and for good reason.

A new window will open listing all documents currently queued for printing. You can see which documents have been sent to the printer and which are waiting to be sent.

Right-click the document you want to cancel printing for and select Cancel to cancel printing the document.
