Chromebooks and printing have a historically painful relationship. More specifically, users finding a printer that works with Chrome OS and setting up that printer has long been one of the biggest hurdles Chromebook owners. For years, this meant finding a printer that supported Google Cloud Print or setting up a second computer as a print server for your Chromebook. Unfortunately, Google Cloud Print will soon be no more. As of December 31, 2020, Googles wireless printing protocol will be retired and that has sent many Chromebook users into a tizzy as they scramble to find a viable printing alternative.

Thankfully, printing on Chrome OS has come a long way over the past couple of years. In some instances, setting up a wireless printer and using it with a Chromebook is actually easier than it is on other operating systems. This is due, in part, to the fact that Chromebooks dont need to download drivers or install applications to access network printers. Today, were going to take a look at just how easy it is to set up an HP all-in-one printer on your wireless network with just your smartphone. Once were done, your Chromebook will automatically see the printer and you will be able to print without any extra applications, extensions, or plugins. Check out this video to see how its done.

Add Your Printer To Your Chromebook

  • At the bottom right, select the time.
  • Select Settings

  • Under “Print and scan,” select Printers.
  • Under “Available printers to save,” next to your printer, select Save.

  • Check that your printer appears at the top, under “Saved printers.”
  • If your printer doesn’t appear in the manufacturer or model drop-down menus, Chromebook may not support your printer. You can try to use a “Generic” Postscript Printer Description from the drop-down menus or you can specify your own PPD.

    If the Add Printer option doesnt display your printer, youre going to have to add it manually. This is all done through your Chromebook, but make sure that the printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network and, once again, that youre using the same network for your Chromebook and printer.

  • Navigate to the Printing section and select Printers.
  • Select Add Printer.
  • Select Add Manually.
  • Enter your info. Under Name, put any name you want. Under Address, enter your printers IP address. Select Protocol: IPP, and then Queue:ipp/print.

    When the settings are restored, the printer enters Wi-Fi setup mode for about two hours, making it discoverable during the HP software installation.

    • Most printers with a touchscreen: From the Wireless or Setup menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

    • Most inkjet printers without a touchscreen: Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons until the Power button flashes, and then wait for the Wireless light to flash.

    The process is pretty much the same as the wireless method. The only difference is that you need to connect the printer with a USB cable. Your laptop should recognize the printer right away, and you can continue with the process of adding it.

  • The printer connection status should be Connected or Ready. If it is not, continue with these steps to connect your printer to the network.

  • Connect the printer to the network.

  • Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup, Network, or Wireless menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the instructions to connect the printer to your network.

  • Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons at the same time until the Power light blinks, and then wait for the Wireless light to blink. Within two hours, press and hold the WPS button on the router until the connection process begins. The Wireless light on the printer stops blinking when the connection completes.

  • If the printer is connected but is still not listed as a destination, continue with these steps to connect with the printer IP address.

  • In the HP Print for Chrome box, click Details.
