What Are Aspect Ratios In Photography

You should now understand that your ability to print is limited by the file size of your image.

But theres another limitation you should be familiar with:

Aspect ratios.

The aspect ratio of a photo refers to the ratio of the long side to the short side. Modern full-frame and APS-C cameras offer a 3:2 aspect ratio, whereas Micro Four Thirds cameras offer a 4:3 aspect ratio, etc.

So with a standard 24 MP full-frame camera, youll end up with images that are 6000 pixels by 4000 pixels, or 3:2.

Aspect ratios are important because the aspect ratio of your print will match the aspect ratio of your file. A printer cannot stretch or compress a photoso if you send a 3:2 image to print, itll come out at 3:2.

This isnt as limiting as it might sound, because there are plenty of print sizes that correspond to a single aspect ratio. For instance, a 1:1 aspect ratio allows you to print at 4×4, 5×5, 6×6, and so on, while a 3:2 aspect ratio allows you to print at 3:2, 6×4, 12×8, and so on.

But you cannot take a 1:1 file and print it at a 3:2 size, and vice versa.

So are you stuck with the aspect ratio of your original files ?

Absolutely not!

The power of cropping allows you to convert your files to any aspect ratio imaginable.

However, youll end up changing the composition in the process, plus cropping reduces image quality, so you should only use cropping sparingly.

The Thickness And Weight Of A Printer Paper

The Thickness and Weight of a Printer Paper

The thickness of a printer paper and the weight of a bond of paper are major factors you need to consider when trying to determine how big they are. The thickness of printer paper can be difficult to measure due to how thin they appear, so they are measured in sheets and reams.

The standard system of thickness measurement involves measuring based on the weight of 500 sheets of paper, which is equivalent to one ream of paper. A ream of printer papers consists of 500 sheets, which means the weight of the ream is determined by the thickness of each sheet.

For instance, the weight of a ream of thin papers will be lesser than the weight of a ream of thick papers. Printer papers are cut differently and their weight is measured in pounds.

There are different printer paper types based on thickness and weight

What Is Carbonless Copy Paper What Can I Use It For

Carbonless copy paper is similar to carbon paper in that it has the same white-pink-yellow triple sheet construction that transfers the original copy to the bottom two sheets. The only difference is, instead of carbon-based ink, these sheets have a specially formulated, micro-encapsulated dye on the back of the white sheet and a coating of clay at the front of the bottom sheet. Pressure from a pen or typewriter key transfers this ink to all three copies at the same timeminus the carbon.

Flyer And Brochure Prints

How to Print any Size Sheet with a Standard Printer

Flyers and brochures can be a handy marketing tool. Whether you want to promote your brand, print out your menu, or make party invitations, first, youll need a clear picture of how your design looks on real paper.

The standard flyer, known as a letter flyer, has the A4 paper format. Thanks to its larger size, it can contain quite a lot of information. A letter flyer often serves as a restaurant menu, product list, educational material, and so on.

Then, we have smaller A6-sized flyers. They dont offer as much space for detailed information. You can use them to introduce your company, list products or services, promote events, concerts, or parties.

Lastly, there are narrow and long DL-sized flyers that we often see as cafe or bar menus, event invitations, short announcements, etc.

The same sizing also applies to brochures. The main difference is that brochures have folds, and therefore, can contain more information. The number of brochure folds, as well as their arrangements, can vary depending on how you want to present your information.

Recycled And Sustainable Paper Stock

Nonrecycled paper, sometimes known as virgin paper, is made from all-new materials, such as wood pulp or cotton. Recycled paper can be manufactured from:

  • Pre-consumer material scrap material left over from a manufacturing process
  • Post-consumer waste materials, like newspapers, used by people in their homes or in other settings

According to Federal Trade Commission guidelines, a paper can be called recycled only if it contains 100% post-consumer recovered fiber. If the post-consumer content is less than 100%, the paper should be called recycled-content paper.

Sustainable papers come from carefully controlled forests that are replanted and renewed. They meet specific environmental standards, helping users support practices that better protect forests and the environment.

Some papers boast an FSC certification. The Forest Stewardship Council is a widely respected not-for-profit organization that seeks to protect the worlds forests by monitoring and improving timber production. The FSC has worked with key players in the lumber industry to inspect and track timber and pulp through production chains, ensuring that woodlands are managed sustainably. Any paper products certified by the FSC are created with sustainable practices.

While some businesses might be hesitant to use recycled paper since its texture and quality can differ slightly from virgin paper brands, FSC-certified products are virtually indistinguishable.

Sizes Of The A Paper Series

On the surface of it paper sizes can be a little puzzling with all these seemingly unrelated letters and numbers. Once you become familiar with what the numbers and letters stand for and how they relate to one another you will be relieved to know it all becomes rather simple.

Hopefully the below animation will help to demistify standard paper sizes.

Successive paper sizes in the A series

The base A0 size of paper is defined as having an area of 1m².

Successive paper sizes in the series A1, A2, A3, and so forth, are defined by halving the preceding paper size across the larger dimension. This also effectively halves the area of each sheet.

The dimensions for each size are as follows:

Size Width x Height

A0 â 841 x 1189 mm

A1 â 594 x 841 mm

A2 â 420 x 594 mm

A3 â 297 x 420 mm

A4 â 210 x 297 mm

A5 â 148 x 210 mm

A6 â 105 x 148 mm

A7 â 74 x 105 mm

A8 â 52 x 74 mm

By the way â DL is 1/3 of an A4 sheet. . This is the size of standard compliment slips.

And posters? Well, we here believe that you need to be looking at at least A3 size and above to qualify as a poster.

What Is Copy Paper

Copy paper is a versatile, lightweight paper that can be found in a copy machine, fax machine, or at the corner of a desk as scrap paper to jot down ideas. One of the most popular weights of copy paper is 20 lb. weight. Stupendous in its simplicity, copy paper typically lacks the specialty finish or composition of glossy photo paper, inkjet paper, or laser printer paper.

Standard Size Of A Printer Paper

Standard paper sizes Pinup Design Agency

There is a standard paper size that works with most printers and is acceptable across the world.

Standard Size of a Printer Paper

The dimension of a standard printer paper size is “8.5 inches by 11.0 inches“. What this means is that the dimension of the horizontal side of the paper is 8.5 inches while the vertical side of the paper is 11.0 inches. They are in letter-size format and are mostly used to print documents in the landscape. This is the basic standard for printer papers in the United States and nearby countries. However, countries in other parts of the world accept the standard A4 printer paper. The standard printer paper size is mostly used for official purposes.

Furthermore, the main reason why the letter-size printer paper is seen as the standard size or default size is that most printers are designed to take papers with “8.5 inches wideness and 11.0 inches length“. If a printer paper is too wide or long, it will not fit into a regular printer, and if the paper is too narrow or short it might be moving from side to side during printing process.

The standard size can come in different types and dimensions such as

  • Letter-size Printer paper
  • Ledger Printer Paper
  • Half Letter-size Printer Paper

Here is a table that shows the different dimensions and uses of a standard printer paper size

Unusual Broadsheet Format Paper

The broadsheet format paper which is 17×22 inches in size is used more often in the printing industry than at home. It is a very unusual size but it measures 2 tabloid sized papers set side by side or 4 letter sized papers set into a block. This is a size that is comparable to a common newspaper and is ideal for this because it offers a long vertical page. Special printers are needed unless the paper is strategically folded for printing with a normal printer.

How To Measure Paper Sizes At Home

It is difficult to choose the paper size you need without seeing it in your eyes. Luckily you can find all the paper sizes at home without much effort. As said above the paper we use in our home with most of the printers is A4 paper . Since each page on the series grows twice the size, we can assemble the large page sizes by connecting several A4 pages. We can also reach smaller paper sizes by folding the A4 page in two.

If you want to see how A5 page looks you can fold A4 page in two and you will get the A5 page size.

If you want to see what A6 looks like, fold the A5 page you created again or alternatively fold an A4 page twice.

If you are interested in seeing how A3 page look like you can place two A4 papers next to each other and you will get the A3 paper size.

And to get to the A1 page size youll need to connect 16 pages of A4 together.

Inches Vs Pixels: Converting Image Dimensions Before Printing

Digital images are sized in pixels.

So an image straight out of your camera will often be something like 6000 pixels on the long end and 4000 pixels on the wide end.

The precise dimensions depend on your camera sensor, with full-frame and APS-C cameras offering one set of dimensions, Four Thirds cameras offering another set of dimensions, and so on.

Of course, the dimensions of your photos arent set in stone, thanks to the power of cropping. But the original dimensions do offer you a starting point, so its wise to check your image files for your straight-out-of-camera sizes.

Anyways, heres the big question:

How do image dimensions get converted into print sizes?

Say you have that 6000 pixel by 4000 pixel image. At what sizes can you print it?

Well, in the simplest case, that depends on one factor:

Print quality.

You see, the larger you print your images, the more youll degrade the print quality.

A standard metric for good quality prints is that you should aim to have at least 300 pixels correspond to each inch of your final print.

So if your photo is 300 pixels long by 300 pixels wide, you can safely print a 1×1 picture. But anything larger will start to cause quality issues.

Fortunately, most cameras offer images far larger than 300 pixels by 300 pixels. The example I gave abovewith a 6000 pixel by 4000 pixel photois pretty standard, and printed with 300 pixels corresponding to an inch of the final print, youll get a 20×13.3 output .

A4 paper is a part of the A series of paper sizes, which is commonly used throughout NZ and by our Mosgiel printing company. Defined by the ISO 216 standard, the A-series paper size consists of 13 specific paper sizes:

  • 4A0 1682 x 2378 mm*
  • 2A0 1189 x 1682 mm*
  • A0 841 x 1189 mm*
  • A1 594 x 841 mm
  • A2 420 x 594 mm
  • A3 297 x 420 mm
  • A4 210 x 297 mm
  • A5 148 x 210 mm
  • A6 105 x 148 mm
  • A7 74 x 105 mm
  • A8 52 x 74 mm
  • A9 37 x 52 mm
  • A10 26 x 37 mm

The A paper size standard ISO 216 has some specific requirements or tolerances when it comes to its sizes, but a general guide is that for each size below A0, the one below is half the size of the one above. For example, A5 is half the size of A4.

To clear up confusion, when we talk about paper sizes, we are also referring to card. That means you can have any of the A series printed as long as card in your required size can be sourced* .

Of special note is that we can print card on our digital press to size SRA3. SRA, which stands for Supplementary Raw Format A, is untrimmed raw paper is used for commercial printing. As it is slightly larger than the A series format, it allows the ink to bleed to the edge of the paper, before being cut to match the A format. We talk about bleed in the article What is Bleed if youd like to know more about ink bleed and how it affects the files you send us.
