Unusual Broadsheet Format Paper
The broadsheet format paper which is 17×22 inches in size is used more often in the printing industry than at home. It is a very unusual size but it measures 2 tabloid sized papers set side by side or 4 letter sized papers set into a block. This is a size that is comparable to a common newspaper and is ideal for this because it offers a long vertical page. Special printers are needed unless the paper is strategically folded for printing with a normal printer.

Legal Printer Paper Size
Legal paper size gets its name from its historical use for official contracts. Stories of why a longer format got adopted dont give a person confidence that we know where it originated.
Anything from lawyers desire for more note space on a single sheet to it was convenient to manufacture when it became adopted. Other accounts suggest it was a more random selection. Regardless, it can be the right size.
If you ever work with spreadsheets, schedules, or Gantt charts, youre likely to end up in the situation where the width of your work on the software often doesnt transfer to the printed form very well.
When it happens to me, its usually because Im using a widescreen monitor, and Im trying to print my work on a Letter-sized piece of paper. With a little adjustment, I can usually fit my work on a landscape orientation Legal sized sheet.
Many printers that can handle Letter sized paper can also take Legal sized paper. If you think you may need to print on Legal sized paper from time to time, confirm that the printer youre buying can support it.
However, if you dont work with significant contracts or need the additional space to print your work, you probably wont have much use for Legal sized paper.

Can Printing Smaller Sheets Save Money
Although using smaller paper sizes can help you save some money and cut down on environmental waste, the resulting text size sometimes ends up too small. Plus, since paper is inexpensive, buying smaller paper sizes wont save you as much money as you think.
Instead, focus on reducing your overall ink costs by buying laser ink cartridges or choosing remanufactured ink cartridges. Ink is more expensive than paper, but its easy to secure discounts if you use a retailer that gives discounts when you stock up. Even color printing projects become much more affordable with the right provider.
Also, take good care of your printer with some basic maintenance for how to get more ink out of your cartridge. By minimizing wasted ink, youll be able to print large projects of any size while staying within your budget.
Recycled And Sustainable Paper Stock
Nonrecycled paper, sometimes known as virgin paper, is made from all-new materials, such as wood pulp or cotton. Recycled paper can be manufactured from:
- Pre-consumer material scrap material left over from a manufacturing process
- Post-consumer waste materials, like newspapers, used by people in their homes or in other settings
According to Federal Trade Commission guidelines, a paper can be called recycled only if it contains 100% post-consumer recovered fiber. If the post-consumer content is less than 100%, the paper should be called recycled-content paper.
Sustainable papers come from carefully controlled forests that are replanted and renewed. They meet specific environmental standards, helping users support practices that better protect forests and the environment.
Some papers boast an FSC certification. The Forest Stewardship Council is a widely respected not-for-profit organization that seeks to protect the worlds forests by monitoring and improving timber production. The FSC has worked with key players in the lumber industry to inspect and track timber and pulp through production chains, ensuring that woodlands are managed sustainably. Any paper products certified by the FSC are created with sustainable practices.
While some businesses might be hesitant to use recycled paper since its texture and quality can differ slightly from virgin paper brands, FSC-certified products are virtually indistinguishable.

Simplified Enlargement And Reduction
Many copy machines have preset magnification factors for enlarging or reducing a copied document in order to print it on a different paper size. These presets typically take the form of buttons labelled A3A4 and so forth. This eliminates wasted margins and saves you the trouble of trying to guess the right magnification factor, which can lead to a heap of misspent paper. Below is a table of the magnification factors between the most common A sizes in case the copiers at your local library do not have such presets.

Paper Sizes And Formats
A4 paper is measured in A paper sizes. Especially since the paper format from A0 to A10 has the advantage of always keeping its proportions. In other words, the length of a sheet Ax will always be equal to the width of A , while the width of Ax will always equal the length of A . For example, fold an A1 size sheet in half to get A2 size paper.
The most oversized standardized printing format is the A0 format , used in particular for on-site communication . The paper formats A1 and A2 are also used for advertising communication but also architectural plans. A4 and A3 are the most common and compatible with most printers and photocopiers. A5 paper is used in particular for printing advertising brochures. Finally, A6 is the standard size for photo paper, A7 is for printing menus or small advertising documents, A8 is the size of playing cards or business cards, and A9 is the size of self-adhesive labels.

Some Questions To Ask Before Buying Paper
Will the paper need to be perforated?
If so, you will need a stiffer stock of paper.
How will the paper be stored?
If the paper is going to be exposed to extreme temperatures or dampness, you should try to choose a paper resistant to these challenges.
Do you need to write on the paper?
In that case, an uncoated, untextured paper might be a good choice.
Will the paper be used outside, exposed to the elements?
There are paper choices designed to survive outdoors, regardless of weather conditions, rain, or snow.
Do you need to mail the printed paper?
A thinner, lighter sheet would work well since postage is charged by weight.
What kind of durability do you need?
Usually thicker, heavier paper is stronger. However, the coating also plays a part in sturdiness. A thick, uncoated paper will turn to sludge when wet, but a thin, UV-coated paper will whisk the water away.
How Long Is A Normal Piece Of Printer Paper
What is “normal” depends on where you are. In North America and a limited handful of other countries around the world, both letter and legal paper are common sizes . Letter is 8-1/2 inches in width by 11 inches in length. Legal is the same width but is 14 inches long instead.
However, if you are located elsewhere in the world, paper sizes are defined by the International Standards Organization, specifically ISO 216. This standard defines the A series as based on an aspect ratio of the square root of 2. Thus A0 is the largest size in the A series measuring 841 millimeters by 1189 millimeters . Each successive size cuts the largest dimension in half so that A1 is 841mm x 594mm, A2 is 420mm x 594mm, A3 is 420mm x 297mm, A4 is 210mm x 297mm, and so forth. The most common typing/printing paper used in countries conforming to the ISO 216 paper size standards is A4 and it is sized between the North American letter and legal paper sizes as 210 x 297 is approximately 8-1/4 inches x 11-3/4 inches.
There is also the B series of sizes that are not used as commonly but they start out with larger dimensions for the B0 paper size, measuring in at 1000mm x 1414mm with each successive size following the same patter of reduction as demonstrated in the A series.
The C series in the ISO 216 standard is used only for envelopes and, thus, is not germane to the discussion only for the sake of being complete in regard to the reference to the aforementioned standard.

The Systems In Existence
Though other paper size standards exist, there are two predominant systems in use today. They are the international and North American systems.
As the term implies, the international standard, also known as the ISO 216 standard, is used throughout the world. It is based on an aspect ratio of the square root of two, like the side of a square and its diagonal. This idea was originally proposed by the German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg in 1786. In 1922, Dr. Walter Porstmann brought Lichtenbergs ideas into being in Germany. This new standard was known as the DIN 476 standard. The system became widely used during World War II. The most commonly used ISO paper size is A4.
The North American system is used primarily in the USA and Canada. The current sizes are based on traditional sizes such as Letter and Legal . The names of North American sizes have started with ANSI ever since the adoption of ANSI/ASME Y14.1 by the American National Standards Institute in 1995. Though the sizes now begin with ANSI, they are nevertheless based on the traditional sizes.

How Is Copy Paper Made
Copy paper is made from a fibrous substance known as cellulose that comes from trees. The cellulose is diluted in water.
- Fun fact: It takes nearly 100 pounds of water to make one pound of paper.
Chalk is then used to fill in spaces between the fibers and give a brighter, whiter hue to each sheet. Fibers are then ground into even finer microfibers.
Once the right consistency is achieved, the pulpy paper substance is then spread on a screen. Depending on the desired level of copy paper brightness, tints of blue and/or purple dye are used to transform the naturally yellow-tinted pulp to a whiter shade.
To extract the water and leave behind paper, pulp is put through a machine that squeezes out the water. Then, its put into an oven to further extract water. From there, the paper is saturated with starch to strengthen it and smooth away any stray fibers. Finally, the copy paper is dried and pressed to ensure consistency of weight or thickness.
