Mixed Paper Types And Sizes Pass
The scanner has two top and bottom oversized feed rollers positioned near the start of the scan . It is a reliable mechanism and can be replaced if worn.
Mixed media/size scans can be bad if you do not take care and do a little preparation.
It scans A4 bond paper very well. It does not care that it may have had creases, punch holes or greasy fingers as long as you remove the staples as these can damage the scanner head.
It also scans other sizes as long as you sort them into sizes and correctly set the paper width sliders. Otherwise, it can skew the scan or jam. The scanner has a wide-open cover to remove jams easily.
Lightweight thermal image receipts were the worst as they tend to curl and have a glassy surface. Again, sort these, flatten them and at worst, hand feed them.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
The ADS-1250W is slightly bigger and heavier than the other scanners we tested at 11.8 by 4.1 by 3.3 inches and 3 pounds. But we think thats an acceptable trade-off considering all the things this Brother model does well. If you place a much higher value on portability, you might want to consider other alternatives.
Since the ADS-1250W doesnt have a battery, you have to operate it via USB or AC power. That means that if you travel with your scanner, youll need to carry a USB 3.0 cable or an AC power brick and cable . We dont think either accessory will weigh you down too much, but these calculations are always very personal.
When running on USB power, the ADS-1250Ws scanning speed slows significantly: Whereas it took just 49 seconds to scan 20 pages at 300 dpi using AC power, it took 2 minutes 57 seconds to do the same task using USB power. This is one area where a battery-equipped competitor like the Epson ES-300W has a clear advantagein our tests that model completed the same task in 47 seconds on both battery and AC power. When using USB power, the ADS-1250W is also incapable of scanning to a USB drive or scanning long paper such as banners or some longer receipts.
Finally, we have to call Brother out for not including a USB cable in the box. If you dont already have one, grab an inexpensive Micro-USB 3.0 cable with a Micro-B connector like this one.

Best Ultraportable Scanner: Brother Dsmobile Ds
*At the time of publishing, the price was $170.
The Brother DSMobile DS-940DW has all of the features we considered most desirable: Wi-Fi connectivity, duplex scanning, a built-in battery, and the ability to save scans to an SD card. It has a small screen on the right side that gives you the option to change certain settings like PDF versus JPEG or simplex versus duplex. These settings are only available when youre scanning to an SD card though. If you’re scanning to a computer or mobile you can make those changes in the software or app.
In our previous round of testing we looked at the Brother DSMobile DS-940DW but dismissed it because the included softwarethe Brother DSMobileCapturewas almost unusable. Since then Brother has migrated the DS-940DW over to the iPrint& Scan app.
On the left theres a switch you can slide back and forth to choose between Wi-Fi, USB, or SD card. Theres also a Wi-Fi Protected Setup button if you want a more secure wireless connection.
During testing it was one of the fastest scanners . It scanned one-sided documents to a computer in .06 second and both sides in .08 second. When connected to the iPrint& Scan app on mobile, duplex scan speeds were surprisingly faster, ready for viewing in .07 second .

The RR-600W measures approximately 6.9 x 1
These measurements are average for desktop document scanners of this class. The ES-500WR mentioned above is identical in size and scope. This is Brothers ADS-2700W. Canons comparable imageFormula DR-C230 Office document scanner is slightly larger in all dimensions, while Fujitsus fi-800R image scanner is much smaller.
The RR-600W supports Wi-Fi and USB 3.0, and you can scan directly to a USB flash drive connected to the back of the device. Any scanning configuration or workflow profile can be accessed via a good-sized 4.3 graphic touchscreen control panel.
The RR-600W captures documents and processes them according to predefined profiles, which Epson calls actions. Actions contain all relevant properties such as resolution, file type and destination. The scanner has several pre-configured actions that you can modify or create from scratch.
A spacious 100-sheet ADF can handle pages up to 8.5 inches wide. In long document mode, the RR-600W can scan documents up to 20 inches in length.
Epson rates the RR-600Ws daily duty cycle at 4,000 scans, which is a lot. You would have to load the ADF with 100 items 40 times a day to achieve this. Among the competitors, only the daily volume of the Fujitsu fi-800R of 4,500 scans is higher, and the ADF is only 20 pages. The ES-500WR, Canon DR-C230, and Brother ADS-2700W all have ADFs with 50 or 60 pages and duty cycles ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 pages.

But It Is The Manage Invoices/receipts Function That Is What Sets This Apart
Once scanned , you can format the data to MYOB Essentials/AccountRight , QuickBooks Online or Xero.
The scan then proceeds to the Review Invoices/Receipts stage, where data is extracted into pre-set fields. At this point, you can fix any misreads , add classifications/sub-classifications and much more. You can read the tutorial. We have a number of screenshots at the end of this review.
We found that the scan to pre-set fields was generally good, but it got confused if GST was shown after the invoice total or the suppliers name was a graphic.
We could not find a way to add new pre-sets , nor was there any machine learning . For example, the software could identify that GST was lower than the total amount.
But on the whole, these are relatively minor issues as most invoices scanned well.

Technically, yes, a phone works for scans. But depending on lighting conditions, or the kind of document youre scanning, a portable document scanner will produce higher quality scans more consistently. We have picks for the best Android and iOS scanning apps, and theyre great for quick medical forms and travel receipts, but we dont recommend using them for large, frequent jobs or tasks where perfect character recognition is required.

Paperwork is the most boring, time-consuming, thankless task best done by mandatory personality-removed clerks and accountants. If you dont do it, keep on top of it the taxman cometh, and he taketh away lots of fines and penalties.
But it took a long time to research, test and write this review . It is not all Epsons fault, but frankly, manuals are sketchy, cloud setup is tetchy, software install was variable, and it took some time to get pre-sets right. So, if you are a busy small business person, seek professional help to get this going to the point where it is useful and indispensable.
The Epson Rapid Receipt RR-600W, when correctly set up, makes getting paperwork from the shoebox to the accountant easy. Our best advice talk to your accountant and work out if it suits you.
Finally, as you dont know if it will work for you until you try it, look for a retailer that will accept returns. User reviews all state that interoperability with their accounting software is the key.
Our Pick: Brother Ads
*At the time of publishing, the price was $210.
The Brother ADS-1250W is the best portable document scanner you can buy because of how easy it is to use compared with its closest rivals. Brothers software provides ample control and puts the most important settings at your fingertips. The ADS-1250Ws Wi-Fi connection is stable, and it can work over Wi-Fi with third-party scanning apps like Windows Scan and Apples Image Capture. OCR performance is excellent, and it scans just as quickly as any other model in this category. Although it lacks a battery, a feature some others in this class offer, it can operate via USB power at a slower speed. We think thats an acceptable trade-off for most people.
Installation is simple, regardless of platform. Brother ships the ADS-1250W with a quick-start guide that provides instructions on how to download the software from Brothers support site. The install process is essentially identical on Windows 10 and macOS Catalinathe only real difference is that Mac users will need to download the iPrint& Scan software from the App store whereas it comes as part of the install package for Windows. Although the ADS-1250W doesnt have a touchscreen interface like the slightly more expensive ADS-1700W, we found it easy enough to connect via Wi-Fi by following the included instructions.

Speed Without Sacrificing Accuracy
Epson rates the RR-600W at 35 one-sided pages per minute and 70 two-sided images per minute . I tested it at 300dpi over USB 3.0 with ScanSmart Accounting Edition on our standard Intel Core i5 testbed PC running Windows 10 Professional.
The RR-600W scanned our 25-page one-sided text document at 39.6ppm and our 25-page two-sided document at 78.4ipm, or somewhat faster than Epson’s ratings. With the processing and saving time factored in, it scanned the same test documents to image PDF at 37.9ppm and 68.8ipm, a respectable performance in comparison with its ratings and its competitors.
Those scores are 2.1ppm and 7.1ipm slower than the ES-500WR, 4.2ppm faster and a negligible 0.2ipm slower than Brother’s ADS-2700W, 4.6ppm and 8.2ipm faster than Canons DR-C230, and 0.9ppm and 7.9ipm slower than Fujitsus fi-800R.
When scanning to searchable PDF, a versatile format more suited to document management and archival applications, the RR-600W scanned and saved our 25-page two-sided test document in 45 seconds. That score is 11 seconds ahead of the Canon DS-C230, 5 seconds faster than the Brother ADS-2700W, 1 second behind its ES-500WR sibling, and 3 seconds slower than the Fujitsu fi-800R.
