Plug Into A Wireless Print Server
If your printer has a USB port, you can plug in a wireless print server, a small box into which you can connect your printer. The advantage of investing in a print server is that you don’t have to connect the printer to a PC, which means you can use your laptop and print anywhere in your home.
We found plenty of print servers in the $50 range onNewegg.com, although many of the models cost closer to $75 or $100). Before you buy, make sure the print server is compatible with your printer .
During the setup, you will have to plug the printer into the printer server, and connect that to the router using an Ethernet cable. Meanwhile, you’ll have to install software on your computer and configure the connection, as you would when setting up a router.
Is Your Wireless Printer Out Of Range
If the printer only occasionally appears online, it could be out of range of your router.
You can check this by comparing its reliability when placed close to the router. Better results will indicate a printer that needs a permanent home within range of the router. Dead zones can result in no Wi-Fi reception in specific parts of your property, so avoid placement here.
Should moving the printer prove impractical, try a powerline adapter. These are available with Wi-Fi repeater functionality or can simply link your printer via Ethernet to the router via your home’s electric wiring.

tips
- Printers with a built-in wireless print server operate on their own network. Other Wi-Fi printers need to be configured through a Wi-Fi access point to the rest of the network. Wi-Fi access points are usually built-in to routers for the consumer market, and buying two separate devices is usually not a cost-effective solution. However, you can connect a Wi-Fi printer to a Wi-Fi network that consists of only a switch and a Wi-Fi access point.

Need some help setting up your wireless printer? Follow our easy steps to get started
Plenty of printers have wi-fi, which means you can print easily without wires from your laptop, desktop, tablet or smartphone.
You don’t have to be in the same room, or in some cases the same building, to print from a wireless printer. Most modern models have wi-fi built-in, but if yours doesnt, there are still ways of making it work wirelessly by connecting it to a router.
But before you can start printing, you must first connect the printer to your home network – all you’ll need is a wireless router and a wi-fi printer.
Reboot Or Unplug To Start Fresh

It’s become a cliche in tech circles, but with printers, it’s true more often than not: sometimes you just need to turn it off and turn it back on again. Often, that means pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down . If this doesn’t workmine sometimes says “busy” and won’t let me power it offyou may have to unplug it completely, then plug it back in.
It’s nice when this works, but it means there’s no permanent solution to this recurring issue, and much like a router that stops broadcasting, you may have to go through this process whenever the printer drops its connection. You could, however, plug your printer into a smart plug and use a voice assistant like Alexa to reboot it on command.

How Does A Wireless Printer Work
Wireless printers are also known as WiFi printers as they often use wireless networks to receive communications. Other technologies used are Bluetooth, Personal Area Network , Near-Field Communication and Cloud.
This makes printing quicker and easier, particularly for those with mobile devices. Users can send documents instantly. For example, they could take a photograph on a smartphone and print without having to connect devices.
Install Raspberry Pi Os
This project is built on Raspberry Pi OS. Unless you plan on using a monitor or screen, you can get away with using the light version.
If you haven’t already, go ahead and install Raspberry Pi OS onto a microSD card. You will need access to the internet. Visit our guides on how to enable SSH and how to set up WiFi on a headless Raspberry Pi for help setting this up.
No monitor, keyboard, or mouse? No problem. The SSH protocol is disabled by default.
It’s important to update Raspberry Pi OS before installing CUPS. If you’ve never done this before, check out our guide on how to update Raspberry Pi OS. You will need to access the Pi via SSH using a terminal.
Get the new official Raspberry Pi OS on your Pi.

Connect Computer Or Mobile Device To Wifi
Irrespective of the method you followed to connect your printer to the WiFi, connecting your computer to the printer should be the easier half of the equation. To start, you just need to make sure that your computer or mobile device is connected to the same WiFi network as the wireless printer.
Once you have connected your computer or mobile device to the same network as the printer, you can pair your devices. Your printer’s name should pop up on the list of devices to pair or connect to – select it, and you’re ready to go! If you experience any challenges with adding the printer as a device to your computer or mobile, then do refer to the printer’s manual.

Share Your Printer Through A Pc
Most operating systems, including Windows, let you share a printer connected to the computer with other devices on the network. In this situation, the PC that has the printer attached acts as a print server, in addition to whatever else its doing.
Assuming that your printer is connected to the computer and working, its not hard to share it:
If you like, you can also change the share name of the printer at this point. This is the name that everyone else sees when looking for a network printer to use.
This is probably the fastest and cheapest way to make a wired printer wireless, but it does have significant drawbacks. First of all, your computer has to stay on all the time, otherwise the printer wont be available.Thats not the most energy-efficient solution, if you care about that aspect of things.
WIth lower-end computers, handling print requests can also affect the performance of that computer, which might not be what you want to happen in the middle of something else.
Is The Printer On Your Network
If not, check the printer is powered up. If it is, try the ping command from the Windows command line. To do this:
If this doesn’t work, try restarting your printer, then restart your router. Still no change? It’s worth restarting Windows at this point as well.

One of the most useful features of many modern printers is their ability to connect to your network via Wi-Fi, eliminating the need to connect a cable between your computers and mobile devices and your printer.
But what if you have a printer that only connects via a USB cable and you really dont want to replace it just to get Wi-Fi connectivity?
The answer lies in a small box called a Wireless Print Server.
Simply place your printer in the place thats most convenient for everyone wholl be using it, then plug it into the wireless print server.
Congrats, your trusty USB-only printer can now be accessed from anywhere in your home or office without running a cable from the computer or mobile device to the printer!
If your printer is old as dirt and giving you problems, youd probably be better off simply replacing it with a new model that has Wi-Fi connectivity built right in. But if you happen to really like your printer and it works great, why replace it?
Simply add a wireless print server to your network and print from your laptop, desktop and mobile devices without having to switch a cable from one device to another.
Amazon has an excellent selection of wireless print servers to choose from, at great prices and free shipping to boot on many of them! to check them out.

Use A Dedicated Print Server Device

If none of the solutions above work or just dont suit you, theres a relatively affordable and reliable solution. You can simply buy a dedicated print server box. This is a little box with a USB connection on one side and an Ethernet port on the other. Inside is a small dedicated computer that has the sole task of accepting network print jobs and then handing them to the printer.
While this does mean your printer has to be connected to the router via Ethernet, it instantly allows all network devices to share that printer. The dedicated print server uses very little electricity and is always available.
There are also wireless dedicated print server devices as well, but they tend to cost a little more than the Ethernet-only variety. So youll have to decide if the extra few dollars are worth it.
