What Do I Have To Consider And What Are The Advantages Of Sublimation Printing
Using the right material plays a major role in the success of the printing result: We recommend polyester fabrics or textiles with at least 80 percent polyester content. Also important is the color of the material to be printed on. Desired motifs, logos and images can be implemented much better on light-colored bases. These limitations, however, have produced a huge range of sublimation-friendly blanks over time. They range from cell phone cases and key chains to mugs and medals. Your choices are enormous!
But thats not all: sublimation printing also has the advantage of being cheap and fast. This means that quite large quantities can be produced in a short time. Promotional objects, small gifts and much more can be produced either for stock or especially for a trade fair or your store. With a sublimation printer, very delicate images and photos are also transferred sharply and cleanly in an excellent manner.

What Sublimation Printers Do You Recommend
You can go two ways when it comes to desktop sublimation printers use a purpose-built sublimation printer or convert an inkjet desktop printer .
The most commonly-used purpose-built sublimation printers are Sawgrass printers. Specifically, the Sawgrass Virtuoso SG500 and the Sawgrass SG1000 .
Another option is the Epson SureColor F170 Dye Sublimation Printer, which is a newcomer to the market and made for dye sublimation inksunfortunately, availability currently seems limited on this printer, as I cant find it for sale on Amazon at all.
The most commonly-used converted printers are Epson printers, specifically the Epson EcoTank printers. The top EcoTank printer to convert is the Epson EcoTank 15000, rated second is the Epson EcoTank 2760 due to its low price point.
You can also convert the Epson EcoTank ET 3760 and the Epson EcoTank ET 4760 .
The main difference between the Sawgrass printers and the Epson printers will be quality and support. The purpose-built Sawgrass sublimation printers have a high print resolution. And you can get customer support if you have issues from Sawgrass when you run into issues.
If you go the conversion route, youre on your own because youve voided your warranty in the process of conversion.

Can I Use My Hp Printer For Sublimation
If you have a HP home or office printer you will not be able to convert it for sublimation. Thats because most HP printers disperse ink onto paper using the thermal heat process.
This makes nearly all HP printers incapable of printing a clear image using sublimation ink because the ink would essentially bake onto the paper or gas out of the cartridges during the printing process.
HP does have a line of printers that CAN and DO support sublimation ink, and UV ink. This special line of printers can print onto sublimation paper or directly onto fabric. They are huge, expensive, industrial printers made for the job.
How much are these printers? HPs entry level industrial sublimation printer is about $7,000 USD, and that doesnt include inks. As you can see, these are not for hobby sublimators.

Dye Sublimation Is Affordable
With the assortment of equipment needed and the multi-step process, dye sublimation printing was once expensive and intimidating. The printers alone could run as high as $20,000, and thats not even including the cost of a heat press.
Now, the market has expanded to give people more options to choose from and the cost of the equipment has been dramatically reduced. The technology has also improved, making the sublimation process much easier with even higher quality printing.
Some of the best names in dye sublimation printing, like Mimaki, Epson and Mutoh, now offer printers at $10,000 or less. And if you consider the potential that dye sublimation printing has for your revenue stream, this investment will be well worth it.
Best Printer For Sublimation

- You do need special paper when printing with sublimation ink. I will have a paper comparison soon but for now, I am using A-Sub Sublimation Paper.
- You can read more about sublimation blanks here in order to choose the correct type of material. Remember that sublimation needs polyester in order to be successful so you do want to choose the right substrate.
- Finally, you will need a heat source. A heat press or an EasyPress will work here but you want something that will get to a minimum of 400 degrees F.

Which Printers Are Suitable As Sublimation Printers
Printers suitable for sublimation printing usually work with water-insoluble disperse dyes . These are often also called sublimation printers or subli printers. Due to the consistency and temperature sensitivity of the ink, special sublimation printers are required. Regular inkjet printers can only be used with special water-based inks. However, changing between normal and special inks is not recommended due to contamination of the print heads and tubes with residues.
Is Sublimation Better Than Screen Printing
If you are making many T-shirts, screen printing is a more cost-effective approach. Dye sublimation is better for small projects of just one or two T-shirts. The reason for this is because dye sublimation is more expensive and time-consuming. Small orders, on the other hand, are not very practical for screen printing.

Disadvantages Of The Sublimation Technology
For sublimation printing you need special printers and sublimation inks. As a result, the initial costs are higher compared to some other methods. In addition, the printers work slowly.
Materials other than polyester can only be used to a limited extent. They must be able to be coated, which is not always the case. Also, white color cannot be printed. If the motif is supposed to contain white or light colors, you need a white background. In addition, you must take into account a slight shrinkage of 1 to 4 percent in designs with sublimation.
As an alternative to sublimation printing, printing with white toner or white toner printers can be used. With toner transfer, you transfer the motifs to a transfer foil and then join it to a so-called B-paper on a transfer press. The B-paper contains a heat-activated adhesive that combines with the print on the A-foil. After separating the A-foil and B-paper, the design can be transferred to any textile. Unlike sublimation, the choice of material doesnt matter here. A wide variety of textiles can be printed, such as cotton, polyester, mixed fabrics, felt, or other materials like silk, wood, or cardboard. Thanks to white toner, it is also possible to print on dark and colored substrates.
Can You Use Regular Printer For Sublimation
Printers can be switched but not on an as needed basis. You must completely flush the system. Reason being the color and chemical make up of the inks are not the same. So if you use regular ink and then put in sublimation your prints will come out wrong and the ink obviously doesnt bond to the substrate see more.

Can Et 4760 Be Used For Sublimation
For the Epson EcoTank 4760, I used around 2/3 of the bottle of the cyan, yellow, and magenta sublimation inks, and I used the entire bottle of black ink. You’ll likely want to top off the ink after you run the printer’s alignment test in the next step since it uses a fair amount of ink in the process.
