Add Canon Printer To Mac Using Bonjour Services

Remember the printout of printer configuration settings? At the bottom, you could see three lines starting with Bonjour.

What is Bonjour on Mac? Its a zero-configuration service developed by Apple for its computers and devices. If both a computer and a peripheral device support Bonjour service, then adding peripherals to the computer is easy.

In our case, a Canon printer that supports Bonjour configuration service appears under the Default tab in Printers & Scanners Preferences. You just need to wait a bit for the printer to appear. In my experience, the wait time depends on the distance between the two devices.

If both the MacBook and the printer are in the same room, then Bonjour service is almost instantaneous. If one device in the Basement and another on the second floor, one may need to wait a little longer, about 30 seconds or so for the first time.

The Mac printer support system is robust. If you have an AirPrint printer, you don’t need to check for system updates. OS X and macOS come with many third-party printer drivers. Apple automatically includes printer driver updates in its software update service.

Because the operating system includes most of the printer drivers Mac users need, don’t install any drivers that came with the printer. Most printer manufacturers mention this in their installation guide. However, if you are used to installing drivers for peripherals, you may install out-of-date drivers by mistake.

For Xerox printers that are configured to use Accounting Codes, the Xerox drivers must be downloaded directly from the manufacturers site and installed first. Once they are installed, then proceed.

Go ahead and click the Advanced button. The busy icon will pop up for a minute, or so, and then you will be given a dialog box. Click on the Type pull down menu, and choose Windows from the selection.

Under the option for URL enter the following:

    smb://servername/printername.clas.ufl.edu

In most cases, the servername will be ls-print04.ad.ufl.edu, but there may be a few printers that are served by the server ls-print001.ad.ufl.edu, or ls-print03.ad.ufl.edu. If you are in doubt, please feel free to ask CLAS IT.

Under the option for Name, enter a description for the printer. This will usually be the print queue name.

Next, select the appropriate printer driver from the Print Using menu. For the majority of printers, the Generic Postscript Driver should be sufficient, however several HP printers are finicky and require a special driver. Some printers may also require special drivers to use all of the features, such as saddle finishing, duplex printing, collating, etc.

If configuring for Xerox printer with Accounting Codes, select the correct driver for your printer make and model .

Finally, click Add and the printer will be added to the system. You will be brought back to the Printer menu.

But, given the differences between the hundreds of printers and routers, its best to check your printer and router user guides for specific instructions if you have issues.

How Do I Install A Printer On My Mac

How To Add A Printer On Apple Mac

The first step to adding a printer is to make sure the USB cable is properly connected to both the computer and the printer, and that the printer is plugged into a power outlet and turned on.

Once you have physically connected the printer and turned it on, it should be recognized by your Mac. OS X includes printer drivers for most USB printers you can buy today. To see if your printer is recognized by the operating system, select Preferences from the Apple menu, then Print & Fax, and click on the Printing tab.

Your printer should be listed on the left hand side of the window.

If your printer is not listed, you may need to visit the website for the printers manufacturer to download drivers. This may be the case if your printer is a recently released model. The procedure for installing the printer driver software will vary depending on the manufacturer, but it is generally straightforward. You download the software from the website, then run an installer program which will guide you through the installation process. You may also need to install driver software if your printer has special features that are not enabled by the generic driver installed by the operating system.

In addition to installing USB printers, you can also install printers that have been shared on the network. You can even print to remote printers using the TCP/IP protocol. All you need to know is the printers IP address.

Cant Add A Printer Reset The Mac Printing System

Many printers from Epson, Canon and Hewlett-Packard come with instructions to NOT install the software that comes with them on CDs. Rather, the instructions say, get the software from Apple, and indeed that is excellent advice. Apple long ago tired of waiting for printer manufacturers to provide software compatible with each new version of OS X, so they started doing it themselves, and on the whole this has been a good thing for Mac users.

    In general, the process is:

  • Connect printer to Mac with USB cable
  • Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click on Print & Scan
  • Click the + at bottom left of the Print & Scan preference pane
  • Let Apple deliver the software over the internet
  • It almost always works. But sometimes it just wont. Usually the failure happens when getting the software from Apple: everything seems to be proceeding apace when all of a sudden, during the download, a message pops up saying something about the software not being available, and to Please try again later. Try later all you want, but once you see that message it is NEVER going to work. Never, that is, unless you know what to do next.

The thing to do next is to reset the printing system. That gives you a fresh start, and in my experience, resetting the printing system ALWAYS solves the problem, allowing the printer software to be downloaded successfully from Apple. Ive never seen it not work. Its easy:

  • Go to the Print & Scan preference pane
  • Control-click in the list of printers
